Skeletor decides he needs an army to take over Castle Grayskull, and concludes that taking control of the Royal Guard is the way to do it. At the Royal Joust, Teela suffers a disappointing loss, and dismissively brushes off Queen Marlena's offer of tutelage. Later, King Randor and the Queen reminisce in the museum that holds the Rainbow Explorer, Marlena's spaceship, fixed by Man-At-Arms.

Queen Marlena remembers how her engines failed, crashlanding her on Eternia, where a young King Randor rescued her from the wreckage. She fell in love with Randor and decided to stay as his queen. The king, Adam, Man-At-Arms, Teela, and Orko fly the Wind Raider to the beach for a picnic, the Queen having decided to stay with her old ship, but Skeletor captures them. The lieutenant of the Royal Guard reports to Marlena that Skeletor has sent a communication demanding the surrender of the palace under the threat of a full attack.

Marlena decides to go on the attack, starts up the Rainbow Explorer, and leads the entire Royal Guard to battle. Skeletor taunts his captives outside Snake Mountain before the Royal Guard attacks en masse. Marlena blasts Adam free and he quickly runs off to transform into He-Man. In short order he, the Queen and the Royal Guard rout Skeletor's robot army. In the aftermath, Randor reveals that the talented pilot is, to everyone's surprise, his wife.

Later, back at the Joust, the Royal Family watch as Teela displays the piloting skills the Queen has taught her. As the crowd cheer, Adam asks his mother why she freed him and him alone. She responds that, he is her son, she had no time to free everyone and that she had a "feeling" he would know what to do. As Adam begins to ask what she means by this, she cuts him off and tells him meaningfully "Adam, a mother always knows her own son, and what he is capable of doing. I've always been very proud of you Adam."
