On Eternia, Adam and Orko take a joyride in the Wind Raider. They are enjoying the view when the Sorceress summons Adam to Castle Grayskull. Orko goes back to the Palace to clean his room while Adam flies to the castle. The Sorceress explains that she has been receiving psychic signals of distress from She-Ra, and she sends Adam to Etheria immediately.

Adam suddenly finds himself in the middle of a war zone, with the Horde bombing a small city. When a missile careens toward him, She-Ra suddenly pushes him out of the way. She-Ra rushes off to shield the villagers from the exploding dangers, while Adam transforms into He-Man and together with She-Ra defeats a group of Horde Troopers. As the Horde Troopers flee, He-Man and She-Ra lead the villagers to the Etherian mines for cover.

Meanwhile in the Command Crawler, Hordak asserts that he owns the village of Dryl and that the villagers are his slaves, and orders the village of Dryl to be burned to the ground. She-Ra explains to a He-Man that the battle began when the supply of Etherium from the mines, which is necessary to run the Horde's war machines, was exhausted. Their robot supervisor grew angry and drove the villagers into the mine, but She-Ra soon arrived to defeat the robot.

He-Man and She-Ra begin a plan to counteract the Horde's inevitable attack on the mine. At first He-Man wants to prevent the city's burning, but the villagers tell him that with freedom, they no longer care about their homes and possessions. He-Man is taken back by this notion, but She-Ra explains that the Horde would return and destroy later if they were delayed now.

She tells her brother that Etheria is different to his life on Eternia, because there is no escape from the Horde. He-Man sends She-Ra forward to the Whispering Woods to get reinforcements from the Great Rebellion, as a Horde army mounts to surround the mine. Hordak demands surrender, and when He-Man battles back his forces, Hordak orders that all the Horde Troopers direct their freeze rays on He-Man.

He-Man is struck by the Command Crawler's giant freeze cannon and knocked backward into the mines, stunned and paralyzed, as the cave entrance collapses, trapping the villagers inside. The villagers become worried about how long they can survive and complain that She-Ra is not there when they really need her. A brave villager named Colin reminds them that they can only be truly free when they rely on themselves and not on others.

They decide to dig their way out of the wall of the mine, all the while the mine's support beams threaten to collapse as the air grows thin. He-Man is unable to help due to the overpowering freeze ray blast. She-Ra is able to alert the rebellion, and as they set out for Dryl, She-Ra flies ahead with Swift Wind to help He-Man. Back at the mine, the cave is collapsing, but He-Man is able to muster all his strength to hold up the tunnel long enough to allow the villagers to escape.

As She-Ra arrives, she fears her brother's fate, but is able to enter the mine and provide supports to relieve He-Man. As She-Ra supports her brother, the cave appears to completely collapse. But heroically, He-Man and She-Ra burst the mountain open and emerge. The villagers find themselves in the outer boundary of the Whispering Woods and are eager to join the Great Rebellion, now they now have won their freedom.
