At the Fright Zone, Hordak has the rebels pinned down, including Adora, Bow, Glimmer, and Madame Razz. Kowl rebukes Bow's idea to stage a direct assault on the Fright Zone. Shadow Weaver plans to test out her new spell, while Catra intends to test out her new weapon. When Bow is stunned, Adora transforms into She-Ra and within seconds bursts into the Fright Zone and challenges Hordak directly. Hordak orders that his trap be sprung, and at that moment, Shadow Weaver casts her new spell as Catra fires her new weapon.

The application of both causes both She-Ra and Hordak to vanish, pulled into a dimensional void. They crash onto a strange planet, and as Hordak attempts to re-engage the battle, a strange creature attacks them, but She-Ra is able to trap it. Watching these events, the Dark One, master of the Dark Dimension, laughs. He tells them that he has created a door that will lead them back to their world, as well as a key, which will open that door. He tells them that if they can find the door and the key, they will be permitted to leave, but otherwise, they must remain in the Dark Dimension as his slaves forevermore.

Hordak and She-Ra begin their search for the door, briefly skirmishing along the way until She-Ra convinces Hordak that they must work together temporarily, despite their dislike for one another. Hordak reluctantly agrees to the truce, secretly plotting to betray She-Ra and prevent her from escaping the Dark Dimension. He charges forward relying on brute strength to meet the challenges they face, but She-Ra uses her intelligence and cunning to pass these challenges, which include a locked door beneath a waterfall and an injured creature.

Hordak remains suspicious of She-Ra, but he is intrinsically suspicious of all sources of good. She-Ra saves the helpless creature, passing the Dark One's final test, which is the test of mercy, a test that no one had previously passed. Having defeated his challenges, the Dark One gives them each a jewel to use as a key to enter the gate, but Hordak seizes the opportunity to steal both, causing them to skirmish.

In the brief battle, Hordak loses one of the jewels, prompting the Dark One to trap him in a stasis field and tell She-Ra that she is now free to escape homeward. Displaying great compassion, She-Ra refuses to leave without Hordak, because she cannot allow herself to see the villain made a slave to the Dark One. She-Ra fights the Dark One, absorbing his energies with the Sword of Protection, but she refuses to redirect those energies at him, instead directing them away to safety.

In doing this, she demonstrates both her great strength and her mighty heart, the Dark One rewarding her by letting them both escape. At the Fright Zone, Bow and Scorpia are equally puzzled about the whereabouts of She-Ra and Hordak, but they suddenly reappear. Hordak not allowing himself to be in She-Ra's debt allows the rebels to leave the Fright Zone without harm, still confused as to why She-Ra refused to leave him behind as a slave. She-Ra leaves hoping that Hordak will one day realize why she freed him.
