Norwyn and his apprentice in magic, Arden, are gathering firewood. Arden disobeys his teacher and decides to take the easier path, using magic to do the job quicker. Norwyn scolds his student, and they leave to eat at a local inn, where a group of Horde Troopers arrive to gather supplies for Shadow Weaver.

Norwyn reveals that Shadow Weaver was not always evil, but that she was imbued with evil magic on one evil night. Arden is intrigued by the possibility of becoming so powerful in one night rather than many years, and decides to run away to ask Shadow Weaver if he can be her student. Norwyn sends a winged messenger to contact Madame Razz, needing her help in the urgent matter of finding Arden.

Adora decides to go with Madame Razz to meet Norwyn, and transforms into She-Ra. Arden stows away on the Horde transport, and arrives at Horror Hall, where Shadow Weaver discovers him. He tells her that he grows impatient to learn magic from his current teacher, Norwyn, prompting Shadow Weaver to reveal that she once knew Norwyn, many years ago, and that she desires revenge against him, blaming Norwyn for robbing her of her greatest prize. Meanwhile, Shadow Weaver has dispatched the Dark Riders, which She-Ra and Madame Razz must overcome to find Norwyn.

When they greet Norwyn, he reveals that one of his former students was Castaspella, while the other was the woman who would become Shadow Weaver: She also grew impatient in her desire for power, and struck a bargain with the Horde, agreeing to betray the Council of Kings in exchange for a powerful dark gem, which would imbue her with dark magic. The gem had the effect of physically transforming her into an evil witch, but Norwyn was able to interrupt the transfer of power by destroying the gem, allowing only one-third of its magic to transform her.

For this, Shadow Weaver blames Norwyn and hungers for revenge. When She-Ra, Madame Razz, and Norwyn arrive at Horror Hall, they battle Nightfire, an evil dragon, but She-Ra uses the creatures own power against it, and it freezes itself. Shadow Weaver is busy tutoring Arden in the ways of dark magic, when one of her flying beasts arrives to tell her that Norwyn approaches. She tells Arden that he must be prepared to sacrifice everything for the sake of powerful magic, and to reinforce this lesson, she shows Arden her true face, which terrifies him.

Norwyn and She-Ra burst in, as Shadow Weaver tempts Arden to take the powerful gem which she holds and complete his transformation. Arden heroically refuses to accept the easy way to power, choosing to return to Norwyn and earn his magical prowess. She-Ra destroys the evil monsters which Shadow Weaver has conjured. When Madame Razz rescues Arden, Norwyn uses his great light magic to escape and threaten Shadow Weaver, reminding her that light always cuts through the darkness she wields. As Shadow Weaver cowers in fear, Norwyn uses his magic to transport them all away from Horror Hall.
