Q & A with prop collector Martin Ruffer

Interview by John Atkin - Oct 2012

Martin Ruffer is a movie prop collector from Germany. Over the past few years, he has been collecting props and costumes from sci-fi & fantasy films, including StargateStarship Troopers, and The Chronicles of Riddick. Recently, I had the chance to talk with Martin about his unique collection of props and costumes from the 1987 MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE movie.

1. How long have you been a fan of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe?

Since I was a kid. I was 6 years old when I got my first action figure.

2. How old were you when you first saw the live-action film?

Can't remember... maybe 8 or so.

3. What was your impression of the film?

I remember being really impressed by the evil Troopers armour. I always wanted one as an action figure.

4. When did you start collecting movie memorabilia from the MOTU film?

Just 2 years ago. A friend of mine showed me his Evil-Lyn costume (from the movie) that was for sale. I noticed all the little details on it, which I never noticed when watching the film. That was the first costume that I bought, and from that my collection grew very rapidly.

5. What costumes do you have in your collection at this time?

Right now, I have He-Man, Teela, Evil-Lyn, Skeletor's Trooper and Warlord, and the Eternian Guard. I also have a few swords and guns, and I recently acquired one of Blade's swords.

6. Are there any costumes or props from the MOTU movie that you don't have, but hope to own someday?

Oh yes. There are still some props out there in private hands... like the Cosmic Key, Karg costume, Man-at-Arms costume, Skeletor's costumes, and the Beastman (in parts.)

7. After 25 years, what do you think it is that makes the MOTU movie so special to you?

The design and craftmanship that went into the film. They are all great designs.

8. Do you collect props and costumes from other films?

I collect from different movies and TV shows, but in the past 3 years I have tried to keep it down a little because I'm running out of space. So I'm selling a lot of my older stuff now, and my focus is on a few special movies, like Masters of the Universe.

* Many thanks to Martin for taking the time to talk with us about his exciting collection. You can see more of his props and costumes at his personal website,
