Heroic Human Periscope
Real Name: Orius
Mekaneck is known as the 'Heroic human periscope'. He is a member of the Heroic Warriors, with the ability to stretch his bionic neck to great heights and see over great distances with his special visors. The goggles that he wears are a battle computer enabling him to see great distances and through objects. He is therefore one of the main spies for the Heroic Warriors. Mekaneck's neck can now extend via an interlaced ring of collapsible sections. He has become so skilled with the manipulation of the technology that he can maneuver his head through almost any series of physical obstacles. Mekaneck’s “eyes in the sky” serve the Masters with reconnaissance information but have proved effective in combat many times. Although Mekaneck often feels inferior to the other Masters in his power levels, he can always be counted on to storm valiantly into battle with his massive mace and courageous heart.
Bio #1 (Filmation)
Mekaneck is one of the most loyal Heroic Warriors and will do anything required in order to serve his King and Queen without question. For many years Mekaneck was negative soul who doubted himself and I would often fall into depression because of the loss of his son many moons before. A violent windstorm had blown his flute-playing son Phillip away, and after a grueling search which caused his neck injury Mekaneck had given up hope. When Man-At-Arms found him with the neck injury, he build him a bionic neck that immediately gave him his special abilities. Mekaneck's sense of loyalty made him stay at the Royal Palace to serve King Randor, revealing an intense sense of duty. Mekaneck would often play games in the courtyard with the children at the Royal Palace as this would often ease the sense of loss he felt. Mekaneck eventually discovered Phillip in the clutches of the evil Count Marzo and with the two reunited Mekaneck was able to be a father to his son once again. Mekanekand his son share a special bond and a love or good music, as Phillip plays the flute extremely well. Mekaneck's main power is that of his extendable neck, which can extend very high, allowing him to see over great distances and scout ahead for the Heroic Warriors. The goggles that he wears are a battle computer enabling him to see great distances and through objects.
Bio #2 (200X)
Mekaneck features in the contemporary relaunch of the Masters of the Universe toy line and cartoon series in 2002. His abilities are altered slightly, with his neck able to bend and twist around corners despite being made of metal, and it can also seemingly stretch to infinite heights. Mekaneck is shown as a formidable warrior, able to hold his own alongside the other masters. He is often paired in battle with Ram Man. He also can use his flanged helmet as a weapon by extending his neck and hitting enemies with his head. His goggles are presented as night vision as well as telescopic. They may be cybernetic as well, like his neck, but this is not revealed. His personality in the new show is insecure and paranoid, feeling his power of extending his neck is useless and giving him an inferiority complex aside his battle comrades. This is brought to the forefront in the episode "Mekaneck's Lament" in which, after an injury, he makes a deal with an old man who promises to grant him better powers if he recovers a magic amulet for him. The old man turns out to be Count Marzo, who wants the amulet to recover his own powers and intends nothing for Mekaneck. Realizing his insecurity has placed his friends in danger, Mekaneck sets about overcoming Marzo's attempt on Eternia and realizing the true benefits of his powers. The old storyline of Mekaneck's son seems to be abandoned for the new series, although he develops a rivalry with Marzo, which is clearly influenced by the old episode "Search for a Son", and is elaborated on in the "Council of Evil" 2-parter in which, Marzo takes Mekaneck prisoner.
Bio #3 (MOTUC Official Bios)
Injured in the Battle of Avion during the Great Unrest, Orius was brought by Duncan to Castle Grayskull where he was healed by the Sorceress. The magic spell replaced his neck with an ever-expanding mechanical construction made of microscopic nanites. By increasing or decreasing the number of nanites in his body, Orius gained the ability to grow his neck to almost unlimited length. Taking the code name Mekaneck, he served the royal household as a loyal member of the Masters of the Universe, using his amazing periscope neck to spy on the evil enemy.
Trivia: Mekaneck was voiced by Lou Scheimer in the Filmation cartoons. Gabe Khouth voiced Mekaneck in the 200X MYP Cartoons. Mekaneck's original working name was Spy Man.
