Sorceress - Heroic Mystic Guardian Of Grayskull
Real Name: Teela'Na
The Sorceress is the mystic guardian of Castle Grayskull and all of it's secrets. She is also the guardian of the “Sword of Power” and the “Sword of Protection”. The real name of the current Sorceress is Teela'Na, who is also the mother of Teela. Teela is destined to inherit her place, although she doesn't know this initially. She has the power transform into the mystical bird, Zoar. With a vast knowledge of magic and history, she is among the wisest beings on Eternia and appears to those in need of help. She is generally considered to be one of the most powerful practitioners of magic on Eternia. However, since her powers are tied to Castle Grayskull, they weaken when she leaves its walls. When she does need to travel, though, she generally assumes the form of Zoar.
The woman who would become the next “Sorceress Of Grayskull” was originally named Teela'Na. She came from the Village Of Nowella, located near Dark Mountain. Shortly before the Great Unrest began and the third occupation of the Horde, the small village of Nowella, was attacked, and subsequently conquered, Morgoth The Terrible and by the Horde Invaders, Ferros, Repta, and Rachney, servants of the Evil Horde, that were on a scouting mission for Horde Prime. They used it's resources to mine for radioactive crystals to power their machines. But the side-effects were dire for the villagers; they grew sicker by the day, their skin turning a pale green. She was aided by an old man, who provided her with a riddle about a castle and means to escape.
That night, Teela Na fled from Nowella. She was spotted by Repta and fired upon, but Ferros talked him out of pursuing her since she was “one woman—alone.” She traveled until morning, when she finally collapsed from a combination of heat and exhaustion in the heart of the wastelands.
She found her way to the mighty fortress—the mysterious Castle Grayskull itself—appeared before her, and an aged voice bid her to enter.
"Birth Of Sorceress Teela'Na"
Within the castle’s walls, she eventually came upon an old woman who called herself Kuduk Ungol, the Sorceress and keeper of the secrets of Castle Grayskull. Kuduk Ungol explained to the weary Teela'Na that she could give her the powers necessary to drive back those holding her village captive, but at a cost: Teela'Na would have to become Kuduk Ungol’s successor, the new Sorceress of Castle Grayskull. Teela'Na accepted Kuduk Ungol’s offer, agreeing to preserve and protect the Swords of Power and Protection, comfort those in need, and fight a constant war against evil. After agreeing to Kuduk Ungol’s terms, all that was left was the acceptance of the castle itself, which it proclaimed by transforming Teela Na into Zoar the Falcon for the first time. Using her newfound powers, the Sorceress defeated Morgoth, and banished the Horde scout force for a time.
"Teela's Origin #1 & #2"
During an infrequent visit outside, she found herself protecting the village of the Pelleezeeans from the evil Prahvus. A lost Eternian soldier named Duncan or Fisto, came to her aide against the Warlord, but he was badly injured in the fight. In gratitude, Teela'Na revealed her true identity to him, and the two fell in love and wed. The second Council Of Elders forbade the union and warned of terrible tragedy to befall Teela'Na's family. To protect her husband and unborn daughter, she convinced him to drink an elixir to forget their love and who she was.
A short time later, when Duncan was on a scouting mission, a falcon flew past him and he heard a beautiful voice in his mind telling him to follow the bird. Mesmerized by the voice, he mounted a horse and followed the bird. The bird led him to the banks of the Crystal Sea. On one of the high cliffs there was a giant nest, where the falcon had landed. Duncan found that, Mer-Man and his allies were trying to capture the falcon so they could use her as a sacrifice to the sea demon, Bakull. The falcon could have flown away, but she was protecting something in the nest. Duncan defeated the Aquaticans and drove them back to the sea. Duncan than climbed up to the top where he found that the falcon was trying to protect a baby. The falcon transformed into a beautiful woman, who introduced herself as the Sorceress. She told him of the history of Castle Grayskull and that it is the responsibility of the Sorceress to protect the castle. She then told Duncan that she had a daughter who must be raised outside of the castle. That daughter needed protection as well as training, for she had a wondrous destiny ahead of her. The Sorceress then told Duncan that he was chosen to be the girl’s protector and guardian. She made him swear that he would never reveal their connection until the time was right, and it was a promise he kept.
"Teela's Origin #3"
During her reign as Sorceress, Teela'na not only cast the spell to clone the Sword of He, she was cloned herself by Skeletor who desired a magic wielding bride to pass on his legacy. With the help of Man-At-Arms, Teela'na saved the cloned child. And it was through her undying love and devotion to this baby girl that Teela'na gave her up to Man-At-Arms, awaiting the day where her daughter would become the new Sorceress and Guardian of Castle Grayskull's secrets.
"Her Involvement In The Great Unrest"
Around the same time, the Horde returned—this time led by an even greater tyrant: Hordak. The Sorceress used the powers of Castle Grayskull to assist the forces of King Randor in repelling the Horde. She could not, however, stop him from kidnapping King Randor and Queen Marlena’s infant daughter, Princess Adora. She even went to the Horde’s base at Snake Mountain alongside Man-At-Arms in an effort to reclaim the princess, but they were too late. Unable to locate Adora after Hordak’s departure from Eternia, the Sorceress used her magic to strip all memory of Adora from the people of Eternia. The only people that knew the truth were herself, Man-At-Arms, and the king and queen.
"Birth Of Skeletor and the formation of the Mystic Wall"
After Keldor's accident (which leads him to become Skeletor), the Evil Warriors take the wounded Keldor back to the Dark Hemisphere. The Sorceress creates a Mystic Wall that seperates the Dark and Light Hemisphere, containing all evil on the Dark Hemisphere.
"Birth Of He-Man"
Once the Horde was defeated once more, Eternia entered into a relatively peaceful time. During these years, the Sorceress continued searching for the princess while at the same time watching over the development of the young Prince Adam. She would even speak to him via telepathy from time-to-time and encourage him in making certain choices, such as raising the cowardly Cringer.
When Skeletor broke through the Mystic Wall, Prince Adam was 18 years old, and believed that it was time to recieve the half of the Sword Of Power, which he fullfill his profacy, could use to become He-Man and rescue King Randor from the clutches of Skeletor. His objective is to fight and free Eternia from Skeletor, the Evil Warriors and any other evil upon Eternia.
Soon thereafter, Teela—frustrated that Man-At-Arms would not tell her who her mother set off to visit the Oracle of the Crystal Sea to answer the question that had plagued her since childhood. After a brief skirmish with Mer-Man, the Sorceress herself revealed the truth to Teela…only to strip her of the memory moments later, as she felt that knowing the truth would only cause Teela more difficulties for the time being.
After that, a series of dreams—and the Sword of Protection itself—revealed to the Sorceress the location of Princess Adora: a distant world named Etheria. She sent Prince Adam to Etheria in hopes of rescusing his long-lost sister, which he eventually did. The knowledge that the Sorceress had never given up the search for her helped foster a deep bond between the two women.
"Death Of Teela'Na"
After being wounded by King Hssss' venom, the Sorceress of Grayskull knew her time was short. She quickly arranged a mission with Teela to the Elder's training citadel in the Polar Ice Cap. Here, the Sorceress revealed Teela's true heritage, that she was secretly her magically clonded daughter and destined to become the next guardian of the Castle Grayskull and its secrets! Although in a state of disbelief, Teela knew in her heart that her mother spoke the truth, and trained with the Sorceress until the venom overtook her. Returning to Grayskull as the new guardian, Teela uses her new magic to protect the Power of Grayskull and guard the safety of all Eternians.
Trivia Of Clawful94:
- The character of the Sorceress is based upon an earlier figure who served the same role in the first Masters of the Universe stories. To avoid confusion, this other woman, who is always depicted wearing a cobra headdress, is generally referred to as the Goddess.
- In the 1980s series, the Sorceress is voiced by Linda Gary, who also voiced Teela, Evil-Lyn, and Queen Marlena among others. She was voiced by Venus Terzo in the New Adventures and by Nicole Oliver in the 2002 series. In the 1987 film, she is played by Christina Pickles (she played Courtney Cox's mother on "Friends") in the role of Sorceress.
- The action figure first released by Mattel in 1987 is a very rare and sought after collectors item today. Its rare existence can be attributed to being released very late into the toy series original run. In 2012, Mattel released a Masters of the Universe Classics Sorceress action figure which also includes a small figure of Zoar. A second Sorceress figure was created as a convention exclusive. "Temple of Darkness" Sorceress is similar to the regular figure, but wears a white outfit with Teela's boots. She includes a unique pedestal for an orb accessory previously sold with King Grayskull.
