Little is known about the woman named Kuduk Ungol, save for the fact that she was once a Sorceress of Castle Grayskull. She was clothed in a similar feathered garb to that of her successor, but with a few extra gray feathers.
Not long after the arrival of a Horde scout force on Eternia, a young Nowellan woman named Teela Na crossed the wastelands looking for assistance—her village had been enslaved by the otherworldly invaders and their cohort, Morgath the Terrible. Just as she was on the cusp of succumbing to the heat and her exhaustion, the mystical fortress known as Castle Grayskull appeared before her.
As the jawbridge lowered, Kuduk Ungol’s croaking voice issued a cryptic invitation, saying, “You who seek help, enter. But know you this: If you enter the walls of Castle Grayskull, you may never again be the same as you are now.”
Hesitantly, Teela Na entered the great fortress and met the older woman face-to-face. She identified herself by stating, “I am Kuduk Ungol, the Sorceress, keeper of the secrets of Castle Grayskull.” She then went on to say that she had been watching Teela Na for some time, but did not elaborate why at the time.
Kuduk Ungol told the determined young Nowellan that she would give her the power necessary to help herself and her people in driving back Morgoth and the invaders, but that it would be necessary for Teela Na to become her successor as the guardian of Castle Grayskull and its secrets. The duties associated with that mantle—which she herself had presumably met as well—included custodianship and protections of the Swords of Power and Protection, comforting those in needs, and waging a never-ending war against evil.
After being praised as someone who was worthy and in possession of a noble heart, Teela Na accepted Kuduk Ungol’s bargain. The older woman instructed her younger companion to step into the Pool of Power. As Teela Na did this, Kuduk Ungol explained, “Only the purest, and the gentles, may have the Power of Castle Grayskull. If the castle accepts you, you will emerge changed.” Again, it can be reasonably assumed that these are also attributes which the soon-to-be former Sorceress also possessed.
Teela Na emerged from the Pool of Power in the form of Zoar the Falcon, but was unsure how to change back. Kuduk Ungol patiently, if not excitedly, instructed her to “Think: Change!”
The new Sorceress returned to Nowella shortly thereafter and successfully drove away the tormentors of her people. When she returned to Castle Grayskull, however, Kuduk Ungol was gone.
The script for the “Origin of the Sorceress” episode indicates that upon returning to the castle, the Sorceress (Teela Na) observed “a gray-cloaked figure [walking] slowly away, using a staff to support [her]self.” A voice-over done by the Sorceress would have stated, “I never saw her again, never had the chance to thank her.”
Kuduk Ungol’s age—and that of the castle’s other guardians—remains a mystery. When discussing the role with her successor, she stated, “I have been Keeper of Castle Grayskull for a long time…” and later, Teela Na was told that she would “never be mortal again.” Whether or not Kuduk Ungol was immortal is up for debate, and there are a fair amount of people on both sides of the fence.
Another question that has been brought up, but never answered, was whether or not there was a prior connection between Kuduk Ungol and Teela Na. There are people who feel that the two women may have been in the same situation as Teela Na and her daughter Teela. Whatever the answer, it remains a mystery, like so much about the once-Sorceress of Castle Grayskull.
