I was going nuts with sales before Christmas. Too many to list offhand.

For Christmas I got the complete series box set of Family Ties.

Also yesterday as a Birthday gift to myself, I ordered all of the season sets of The Cosby Show on ebay from various sellers, looking for the best prices that I can.

I had been procrastinating on getting them, and recently found out that the existing versions are being discontinued and Mill Creek will soon be re-releasing them. While the Mill Creek versions will be cheaper (and while there was a time when I could have probably gotten the existing sets for cheaper), I got this for an all around decent price. And in looking into the upcoming Mill Creek releases of Seasons 1 and 2, they are each only going to be 2 disc sets, and each season has 24 or 25 episodes. I know that Mill Creek versions tend to use fewer discs, but that is cramming A LOT on 2 discs. Even the Mill Creek Roseanne and 3rd Rock releases were 3-discs per full season, if I recall correctly. I figure they will be compressed as hell.

I hope that I bought the correct version of Season 1. It was initially released with the syndicated cuts of the episodes, then a couple of years ago it was "silently" re-released with the full network cuts and additional bonus features. The cover art is the same and apparently so is the UPC, but the back indicates the full cuts and additional features. The ebay listing that I bought this from lists all of the bonus features that were added and uses an actual photo of the front of the box (not a stock photo), so hopefully it will be the correct set.

I got the first 33 episodes of classic Thundercats at Ollie's.

I haven't seen an episode since adolescence. If I'm lucky, I might actually remember a scene or two, but probably not.

Just out of curiosity, are you collecting Laser Discs mainly out of nostalgia for the format, itself... or is there a particular reason that you would prefer to watch movies on Laser Disc?

I personally 'missed the boat' on the Laser Disc format since during it's height I was too young to afford it (not much personal disposable income, and it wasn't something my mom and step-dad would have gotten into) and by the time I started appreciating movies in a way that made me more aware of things like letterbox/ widescreen, original aspect ratio, and so forth, the format was on it's last legs. DVD came out not that long after. And Laser Disc just always seemed like a very inefficient medium since it typically was a minimum of two discs (or two sides of a single disc) for an average movie.... and more for longer movies. The idea of having every movie disrupted by a forced break in having to swap out a disc (or waiting for the player to read the other side if you had one that could read both sides of the disc without removing it) just never appealed to me.

I ask the original question above because I just couldn't see myself opting to watch a movie on Laser Disc when/if I can get the same film on DVD or Blu-Ray given the issues with the format that I just mentioned. For actual viewing purposes, I understand hunting down Laser Discs of movies that might have bonus features that never carried over to later formats, and I could even understand getting something like the original versions of the Star Wars Trilogy movies (since arguably that's the best quality editions of them ever officially released... from what I hear even more so than the DVD versions that came as 'bonus discs'), but with all other things being equal or better on a newer format, I couldn't see opting for a Laser Disc over DVD or Blu-Ray.

If it's just to collect them, I get it. I'm just curious is all. And if you want to watch movies this way, that's totally cool. By no means is there anything "wrong" with doing so, it's just an inquiry is all.

I don't know many people in real life that have that any at all, and many don't have a clue what they are.
So compared to my friends, i have a huge collection. oh, btw, I'm watching ET right now, because someone said he reacted to YODA and something about one of those horrible Star Wars 1-3 movies having the ETs in them...but I don't want to watch those Jar-Jar binks movies just to see if it's all true.
I'll tell you one thing, the LDs are less edited than the VHS tapes.
I had the VHS tape from Blockbuster (rental tape that was sold) of the Nutty Professor. I do NOT recall hearing the N word it the movie at all. The LD version has it all over the movie. Makes me wonder how many RENTAL versions are edited.
I know they changed THE GOONIES for some politically correct reason when they released it on DVD, but the original VHS and LD were not affected. I have the Pan-And-Scan version, but I really want the Widescreen version. I like things to be as TRUE to their original as possible.
When I first got the DVD of Goonies i was ******! I've never seen PIXELATION (what i called Compression artifacts) until then, and this was the early days of DVD. you NEVER see that on Laserdisc. BRD are fine, but I'm not REBUYING old stuff on that format, unless there's tons of extras and they remastered the film.
There are many reasons why I love LD, but for $1 a disc, I can't see why anyone would turn them down. I have bought many collections off craigslist for even less, like $25 for 50 discs. People think they take-up too much room, but that's not really so. If you folded-up a disc it would fit in a VHS case...if that were possible to do without breaking it. VHS tapes wear-out, LDs do not, except the cheaply manufactured ones that come-unglued and get laser-rot as we call it.
    BRD>LD>DVD>VHS
So, I PREFER to watch a movie on Laserdisc because I can be confident that some editor didn't go CHANGING the content just to not ****-off some easily offended politically correct revisionist. If people are into neutering movies for themselves, that's fine. But don't make that decision for me! Keep it real!

It's a picture floating around the internet claiming E.T. is a Jedi it's kind of funny considering yes in the senate room as a head nod to Lucas working with Spielberg on so many things we have aliens who look just like E.T.. And E.T. does have a reaction towards Yoda, and does have the kids fly through the air. Considering Star Wars happened a long time ago, it could be OK for them to use healing power of the force.

I would post but the final image has a bad word in it.

I can't find that info, but I'll be there is less profanity or something.
Also, the DVD was low quality compared to the superior Laserdisc.

I hate censorship, so when they alter the originals it corrupts our memory. They often do this for the rental VHS tapes, and perhaps DVDs, but I don't want to falsely remember my childhood through rose colored glasses.

    P.S.
I think I forgot to share some new DVDs from BJs from a week ago, because the NEO GEO GOLD stole the spotlight:
DVD Good Times Seasons 1 and 2

    DVD Wings Seasons 1-4

DVD The Cosby Show, Season 1 and 2

I was checking out what was for sale at our local video rental (I don't really rent movies- I just buy the previously viewed new releases once they go on sale). I snagged The Purge, Insidious: Chapter 2, and Thew World's End all for less than $21 total.

And Falconhood, the scene with ET's species in it is during the senate scene during the Phantom Menace. It's extremely brief and they're just one group of alines among hundreds of others.
