I think it rocks. I love early sketches... sometimes more than the final pieces. But great job thus far.

My compliments. Why haven't I seen this earlier. Like the widescreen view. Planning to do the other castles?

Horrorist: I'd love to do the other castles/locales at some point or another. Most of all, though...I'd LOVE to touch the Fright Zone...add some Dante/Lovecraft inspiration to it...

hey prime this is looking amazing..... i love everything. i cant even pick a favorite piece of work from you. do you think there's anyway possible you could repost your triklops tutorial of digital painting? and i was wondering if you used a pen to paint rather then a mouse.... aside from the tutorial any tips in general in digital painting? if you dont want to or dont have the time i understand. but at least the tutorial would be very much apprieciated

    XxTrApJaWxX:

    1) Here's that link to the Triklops tutorial...

    2) I use a Wacom Intuos 3 to paint...definitely NOT a mouse.

    3) Once I finish this piece, I'm going to put together an in-depth tutorial including step-by-step method, design and color theory, tips and tricks, and some incites I've gleaned from a couple of high-end industry artists. Hopefully that will help!

Shouldn't be *too* much longer. I've been super busy lately but now that things have calmed down, I'm getting back into this painting with a vengeance! The composition and color palette is basically how it's going to stay...but there's a WORLD of detail left to add. I think everyone will be pleasantly suprised with how it turns out.

    At least...I hope so!

Thats such a beautiful piece. The utilization of shadow and texture is absolutely incredible.

    Well, my thoughts were...

Grayskull was originally more of a neutral location (not devoted to good or bad), and was pretty much there for the taking by anyone who could manage to unlock its secrets. That said, it seemed neccessary that it look like a neutral location...lush, but not too lush...and at the same time, barren, but not too barren.

    That make sense?

Thats really how I pictured Grayskull. I think it should be monolithic in size; as if it is containing some dark ancient secrets only to be unearthed by the bravest few. The shadow it casts should be intimidating enough on the landscape as not to attract casual wanderers.

Also, I like how the top of the castle has a Romanesque feel to it. Almost as if it were a citadel of the occult.

Wow, that is absolutely AMAZING!! I'm a huge fan of the movie Greyskull, and I love how you've incorporated that look to this piece. It's a wonderful hybrid, and I love how you've seamlessly melded it with the background.

Wow...it's amazing to think that all of the great power in Eternia rests behind those hollow, ghostly eyes...

I totally understand why you done that.
But I liked how the Filmation greyskull was located.
Yes it's at the edge of a forest but it quite aways from the last tree shall we say. Like a mile or two.
Almost as though it were situated "where no wind blows and or tree grows"!
Ah ignore me, I'm being too fussy!

This is looking nice, very nice painting there Prime!

But if I can nit a pick... It's feeling more like Cave Grayskull and not Castle Grayskull... Know what I mean? In the concept stages it seemed that the top was going to be more elaborate or added on, and now that we're seeing the finish, I dunno all the emphasis is at the mouth.

Don't get me wrong, this is a beautiful piece, I'm just second guessing now the concept. That's all. Not that you need to change anything.

Fear not...It still has ALOT more work to be done. Basically, the top and right sides of the castle are still just blocked-in light (more or less), so that I could get the particulars of the lighting figured out. Rest assured, those elements will be more "castle-y" in the end.
