    Secret of the Sword question

I keep seeing reports that SOTS was first originally aired on television in five parts, but I could SWEAR that it was released in theatres first and then on television afterwards.

    Which way was it?

    In a way, both.

SOTS was written as 5 episodes. It is the first five episodes of She-Ra. That is how it was originally written. It is apart of the 93 episode run of She-Ra.

Filmation then edited the 5 episodes down a bit and made it into SOTS, which was in theaters and then later premiered on the USA Netowrk.

That's what I thought. I'm betting it was at the theatres first and then the uncut episodic version aired on TV to kick off the She-Ra series itself.

I always see SOTS as the launch of the She-Ra brand and then the Sword of She-Ra as the actual cartoon series launch.

I think in terms of what was first available to the public, SOTS first came to theaters, and then it was later aired as 5 episodes.

However, as TheShadow pointed out, it was originally produced as 5 episodes and then cut into the movie form. This means that even though that had never aired or been released to the public in any form, the 5 separate episodes were the first incarnation to actually exist. But, after that, they made the decision to edit it into a movie and release it that way.

So, in terms of what existed first, within the confines of Filmation studios, it was the 5 episodes, Then the movie. They were then released to the public, but in the opposite order.
