The cat lady was going to be in the comic, but that's about the time Mattel put the nix on any new characters.
We got away with having background characters that had no names mentioned.
But she was going to be a major character, so we couldn't give her a background appearance. That's why she only appeared as an ad, but didn't end up being the cover of the actual issue.

Am I missing something or is the Cat Lady owned by Mattel?

I thought because she was only featured in an ad she remained the property of MV creations?

Everything created by MVCreations is property of Mattel.
That's how it works when you produce material for a licensed property.

Thanks for the clarification.

I thought that was how it worked. But a part of me thought that never officially featuring in the comic meant she was still under your control.

What about the fan-art featured in the comics then?
Are they property of Mattel, too?
Furthermore, the Catlady was "disapproved" by Mattel, indicating they don´t want to own the character, wasn´t it?

I´ve got a very creepy vision of fans having to pay lots of money because they are still using their own drawings in other playces, or customizers getting into big trouble because of the fanmade Catlady-bust that has been sold...

All Fanart of any character they own is, of course, owned by Mattel.
The moment you put it online, it's theirs to use.
After all, it's their characters. Your the one who needs permission to reprint or repurpose your own artwork featuring their characters.

That doesn't mean you can't make the art.
It just means you can't do anything with it for profit... sell copies, use it for t-shirt art, etc, etc.
Only Mattel can do that unless you have permission or a license to do otherwise.

The cat lady bust already got put on ice.
It can't be reproduced in quantity.

Hate to break it to you, but that's how it is for all intellectual properties.

Some companies are just more diligent about enforcing it than others.

But these companies are rarely going to use any fanart, because the overwhelming majority of it is not of the quality they seek and/or it doesn't have the content they require.
Their bigger concern is that you aren't trying to line your pocket by using their characters.

Also, different countries have different levels of enforcement. Is Disney aware of some of the fan-comics (with limited print runs, btw) that are sold in Japan featuring POTC characters as cake decorations, catboys and such? I think some tolerance of that is part of doing business in Japan. But as a whole, fan creativity is a way to keep interest alive without investing too much in advertising and such.

I for one would happily buy 'cat lady' as a staction. As well as a few other characters who frequent our fan art section such as Glade or one of the Anwat Gar characters would be fun too.

I just noticed...she has the famously despised "Teela boot" from the action figure...hmmmm?! Ok, lets dance....

She has no name, but we know her story could not be told...Mattel may not mind having her named by Val when the time is right...she's a totally new character not ever used in the MOTU mythos before but...

any more riddles to add?
