Sorry, didn't mean to spoil it. I thought my post was general, but may be it might have given something away....anyhow, can't wait to hear everyone's opinion of the later acts.

The big cut-scene before the end of Act II pretty much almostr had me in tears as it is. Not sure I can bare to finish Act III yet :s
Man, if you think those are hardcore, you ain't seen nothing yet!!! The beginning of ACT III was annoying, but once you get through the first part, it gets really good.

I think I'm going to go through the game a second time on Big Boss difficulty. The game has a great balance of not being overly difficult...and seeing as I've never played a MGS game before, that really surprised me. I was expecting it to be hard to the point where I didn't want to play it anymore. I was totally wrong. Then again, it does help to have a great story to make me want to keep going.

After I beat the game, I'm going to try and get more time with MGO and I'll set up a clan for it soon thereafter.

Many of the MGS games play similar, none have the refinement that MGS4 though.

I think its a testament to Kojima that many who have never touched an MGS game are so engaged with the story, just imagine how much depth the story would carry for you if you had played MGS1-3

No...I didn't mean it that way. You haven't given anything away, but I know how tempting to tell people just what is so cool about certain parts of the game.

    "Bang"

I love this game. 60+ minutes of cutscenes at a time, and it's never lost my interest. The story and movie-feel to it all is incredibly well done.

So I managed to pull myself together to finish Act III of MGS4 last night. They really have balanced the boss fights pretty well, haven't they? And talk about some major dramatics after that.

I had already guessed where Act IV was going to take place when they mentioned something in the beginning of the briefing. Then they came right out and said where it was going take place, and I was soooo happy.

And let's not go into the "I was having that dream again" bit. I thought that was hilarious.

This game keeps on delivering. Loving every second of it.

Does MGS4 have a way to rewatch the game's cutscenes? I haven't looked through all the menus yet. That would be great if you could.

PS3 firmware update 2.36 is available to download. Just another basic update for certain game stability. When the 2.40 version hits in the near future, it's supposed to have some cool features like the trophies & in-game XMB.....

Go figure...the moment I say the difficulty is balanced...I end up getting stuck.

ACT V is super freaking hard. I died a total of 4 times in the first 4 acts...and since then, I've died like 7 times. I'm gonna take a break from the game and see if I can compose myself.

For people who want to brush up on their MGS history before tackling MGS4, check the PSN store tomorrow - Konami is releasing a free download that basically goes through the history of the previous games. There are spoilers and such, but if you need a refresher, or for some unknown reason have no interest in playing the previous titles, this should help get you back up to speed before tackling the GOTY. (At least up to this point-Yeah, I said it. Screw GTA4.....)

It would be cool if it was the video that you got when you preordered, I really liked that and its only about 20min but went through the relationships and the history.

And yes I agree, right now it and Wii Fit are my GOTY

Crikey.....Act V on MGS4 is a hard nut to crack. I must have spent atleast two hours last nigth trying to get through the first section, only to be caught out by a momentary slip of concentration.

It was fun though....but I was too exausted to try to get through it again. I'm going to give it another go tonight!

My favorite trap has to be setting sleeping gas mines and watching the enemy troops fall over. Then when their comrades go to check them out, I zap them with a tanq dart or CQC them. The fact that I have the option of getting past that section, which isn't so big, in so many different ways is something that makea MGS4 a real joy to play.

I love the tranq darts, in Act 1 I liked hitting people with them and having their comrades come over and look then nailing them too

I've been tranquing everybody, then crawling up and shooting them in the head with the silencer to keep them from ever waking up.

Holy COW was the boss of act 4 ever difficult for me.

The last 20 minutes of the game are beyond amazing. One of the best gameplay/cinematic feats I've ever seen/played in a video game. Can't wait to hear what you guys think! May be we should make a separate thread so we can talk spoilers!

I was disappointed in a couple of areas with MGS4. Firstly I felt the stealth elements were redundant, with the focus being on "Guns" and that damn "War Economy" it felt more like a third person shooter than anything else.

The cutscenes were far too numerous for my liking, my perception playing through was that its' more movie now than game. And I suppose if you want to summarise it as a movie then you could call it 'No Country for Old Snake'.

But my biggest gripe is that after emotionally intense Chapter 5 the Epilogue destroyed any investment I had in the story. I won't go into details tjough I do wonder what others who have completed the game think?
"So what am I supposed to do with it?"
"It's a magic sword. You lift your arm and shout 'By the power of Grayskull', or something like that."
    "And then what happens?"
"Then you get struck by lightning."
*looks at the sword for a moment*
    "Here then, you try it."

The funny thing is, you could play it as a third person shooter or as a stealth game. There are so many ways to play the game. I didn't think the stealth elements were redundant though. I was able to mix it shooting and just enough of stealth to get through each act. I think the last act you could only play one way, but that is only 1/5 of the game.

The cutscenes were far too numerous for my liking, my perception playing through was that its' more movie now than game. And I suppose if you want to summarise it as a movie then you could call it 'No Country for Old Snake'.
Yeah there were definitely some long cutscenes. I was late for work because of one of them. But I thought they did a great job of keeping the player interested by allowing them to switch cameras, angles, and zooming in. I guess after playing boring FPS with absolutely no story and adventure games that lacked depth in plot, I thought MGS4 was a breath of fresh air.

But my biggest gripe is that after emotionally intense Chapter 5 the Epilogue destroyed any investment I had in the story. I won't go into details tjough I do wonder what others who have completed the game think?
Hmm...I don't know where you're coming from without more details. I thought the ending dragged a bit...but the game had to tie up so many different plot holes. May be its the fact that I really just looked at the game as a fun entertaining game rather than trying to understand all the intricacies of the series.

Perhaps it was a good thing I never got into the previous games or I might feel differently?

It just depends on how much you are trying to understand and tie together on the spot.

With MGS games i always play through them and then if I get the ties and story at the time great, if not then the 2nd playthrough or a retrospective thinking of the cutscenes ties it all together.

The MGS world and storylines are so large and not everyone is interested in the same aspects or characters

Plus this is supposed to be the final game, there "should" be no more MGS after this (though I highly doubt that given the lucrative nature of the license and the characters)

Eh, even after just playing MGS4, the storyline is way too convoluted for me to grasp. I think people who try to understand every aspect of this type of series will just be disappointed. As much as I enjoyed the movie-like atmosphere, the plot is still very much a video game story. I never ever felt like the story was of high quality, but that the presentation kept it from being too over the top. The only thing that sets the MGS series apart from other story-driven games is the way it's told.

I don't think it was going to be the final game in the MGS series. Kojima said it would be the final MGS game with Snake. I read somewhere the next protagonist would be someone we're familiar with. I think it was the 1UP Show where they interviewed Ryan.

That game is a true gem in the DS lineup, it also redeemed by faith in Square Enix to be able to create something that does not have Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest in the title

They severely undershipped it to and sales I think have well exceeded their expectations but IGN says they do not see a sequel in the works

Just picked up 3 games today at TRU, them having a Buy 2 get 3rd free this week. Got Guitar Hero On Tour, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, and CrossworDS. The lady at the register actually didn't ring it up correctly, she rang up CrossworDS twice, instead of ringing up Zelda, so I got all 3 for $15 cheaper than I should have gotten then....
