I've often wondered this myself. Wasn't this contest late in the game as far as Masters Of The Universe goes? I don't remember when exactly it was held.
why wasn't the figure produced? did that kid get his money and did the other finalists get their money too?
i know the promotion was in late 85, was it the fact that motu slowed down in late 86 and just axed the promotion?
did the kid's parents sue mattel? can they be sued for not obeying their own rules?
can i ask anymore questions?![]()

LOOOOOOooooooooong story short.
Nathan Bitner. He got a poloroid of a prototype that was pink and green. Never saw the figure. He did get the college money, though.
Later, he was one of the original designers of Halo. But he had money issues and was in love with a hooker he didn't sleep with. He tried to start his own software company, but eventually bailed to the Military, where he works in medical. At last word, he was in Iraq.
There was a whole year long blog on X Entertainment dealing with this, where Bitner apparently posted once. Also, the other contest winners were found on there too..

a hooker?![]()
is that what motu success or success in general does to a person?![]()
did mattel ever give a reason as to why they did not go along with the project they promised?
I always personally thought that Fearless Photog had resemblance to Sy-Klone. Their (original) colour scheme was the same, and they both had the monitor feature on their chest. I wonder if there was a connection or not.

I've seen several different custom versions of the figure. I'm glad to hear the guy got his money, but having the figure would have been way cooler.
Anybody remember the other finalists? I just remember the big eyeball with arms and legs. I should look those ups, they ran in the funny pages of the sunday newspapers at the time.
The other four finalists were called Netta, Eye Beam, Compactor and Brainwave. I remember seeing a scan on the net somewhere of the page in the paper announcing the winners a while back, but I didn't think to save it. I've been trying to find it. If I do, I'll post the link.

In the course of the Bitner blog, the original winners for Netta and Brainwave were found. IIRC, Brainwave was originally supposed to be a younger hero, with a completely different color scheme.

I thought I remembered seeing a scan of all the contestant figures and article on X-Entertainment, but all I can find is the aforementioned (but still very interesting) blog - http://x-entertainment.com/updates/index.php?p=153
(There is a link to the 'org with a supposed prototype, but it doesn't lead anywhere)
But check out the Fearless Photog scan though - you're not telling me that there isn't a Sy-Klone connection??

I was actually a runner up in the contest...I was about 3 years old or so and my Character was Grassman...don't remember much only that he was all green (kind of like mossman) and some of his powers included making his enemies itch and getting grass stains on their clothes. I won the Horde Fright Zone Playset. I actually still have the letter telling me I was a runner up. I posted a scan of it on the boards a couple of years ago, I can post it again if anyone wants to see.

That is so cool!!! I searched the forum for this information. I was a runner up, too, and got a Fright Zone playset (but I already had it so I think it got given to my cousin. Didn't keep the letter.
And the strange thing is, later on a toy was produced using the name of my character: Monstroid. Which I never did get, actually. My character as I remember was very lame (as it was more or less ripped off of the Horde Trooper).
I knew they never actually made the winner. I can remember voting for Brainwave because, as I recall, his creator was a kid who lived in a city not far from me. That and I thought he would have made a unique addition to the MOTU line.
i'm totaly not aware of what you guys are talking about, can someone show me a pic of this winner figure??
Here ya go.

I am really hoping we someday get a movie of the saga of Nathan Bitner. It's got everything you want in a biopic: He-man, Halo, a controversial war in Iraq, and a prostitute named Gemini.
It would be like Forrest Gump without the "stupid is as stupid does"....
I'm full of beans.
