Ionus: thanks man!

ok, next up, another dude with an axe! It's Battle Armor He-Man, reborn as "Battle-Scar," for obvious reasons:

On the one hand, I think I more or less got across what I was trying to with this piece. On the other hand, I think it greatly suffers because I have not yet posted an illustration of He-Man proper, for comparison. I need to remedy that soon. In the meantime, I'll just have to point out the differences that would be apparent if I'd had the foresight to finish a pic of He-Man first. Lame!

Anyways, where He-Man has blonde hair and orange (copper?) bracers & belt, Battle-Scar is strawberry blonde, and has gold bracers & belt. I've given Battle-Scar pale skin and blue eyes, in contrast to the Filmation version of He-Man, who had dark eyes, and deeply tanned skin. The idea was to give Battle-Scar more of a Celtic or Nordic look (which is where his title of Berserker comes in as well). In terms of facial features, the cartoon depicted He-Man with more or less classic good looks--I gave Battle-Scar a face that was a little closer to the rough-hewn looks of the toy. His armor is slashed and dented, to represent the battle-damage gimmick of the toy, and the scars on his body were added to continue the theme and give a visual cue as to his ability to take punishment (more in the profile below). On its own, I think this character re-mix comes off as just a version of He-Man, but once I post my take on He-Man, hopefully the differences will be more apparent.

My drawing is a little static, but hopefully it gets across the idea of raw power that I was going for. No characters with axes next week--I promise!

    * * *

PROFILE: Young, loyal to a fault, and still somewhat naive, BATTLE-SCAR is nevertheless a veteran of the battlefield. Even before he obtained his magical breastplate, Battle-Scar was well known for taking heaps of punishment on the battlefield. His immense stamina and resistance to pain are magnified to demi-god levels by the breastplate.

Ostensibly, Battle-Scar was the first member of the entity that would become affectionately known to the populace of Eternia as TEAM GRAYSKULL, named so by Orko, much to the chagrin of their reluctant field commander THUNDER PUNCH. It is notable that Battle-Scar is the only member of the core team who is not a blood descendant of King Grayskull.

HISTORY: Years ago in the northern lands, the boy who would become known as Battle-Scar watched as He-Man saved his village from a brutal attack by Skeletor's forces. This left an indelible mark on the youth, and he strove to live up to He-Man's example of bravery and honor. Thus when word of He-Man's disappearance spread, Battle-Scar (now a young yet experienced warrior) wasted no time, travelling to Eternos immediately to pay his respects to his missing (and possibly fallen) hero and offer his axe in service to Eternos and Castle Grayskull.

Initially He-Man's allies were unsure of what to do with the young scarred warrior who stood before them. Teela decided to consult the Sorceress, and was bringing Battle-Scar to Castle Grayskull, when they were attacked by a platoon of evil Horde robots. Teela and Battle-Scar managed to fight them off long enough to retreat into the safety of Castle Grayskull's dark halls. However, more Horde Robots were on the way, Teela had been gravely injured during the battle, and Battle-Scar's axe was shattered, and his armor was blasted to pieces. The Sorceress saw to Teela's wounds and lead Battle-Scar into a room pulsing with magical energies--the armory of King Grayskull himself!

"According to prophecy, only the just and even-handed--those worthy of King Grayskull--may wield these implements of war," the Sorceress told him, "choose wisely, young warrior!" Battle-Scar was humbled beyond words--he could not bring himself to even touch the magnificent arms and armor before him. Everything was elaborately crafted and intricately inlaid with precious metals and gems. He spotted a dusty breastplate and axe in the corner; unlike the other items, these were plain and ungilded. The axe was rough and worn from use, the breastplate marred by slashes and dents, and marked with an ancient heraldic symbol of Grayskull's line. In spite of their obvious wear, both were sturdy, and well-crafted--they would serve his purpose. Battle-Scar hastily equipped the breastplate and axe, promising the Sorceress that he would return them as soon as the battle was over. As Battle-Scar ran to the Jaw-Bridge, the richly crafted weapons shimmered and faded--in their place was a collection of humbler, and yet more powerful implements--like the axe and breastplate that Battle-Scar had chosen, these were the true weapons of Grayskull's armory. Sorceress smiled to herself, "Well done, young warrior."

Now armed and clad like a god of war, Battle-Scar dispatched the Horde robots easily. After the battle, Battle-Scar attempted to return his newfound weapons. The Sorceress explained to him that he truely was one of Grayskull's chosen defenders, and Battle-Scar pledged himself to defend Castle Grayskull until He-Man returned.

    * * *

In case anyone didn't pick up on it, the whole "choose wisely" bit is totally lifted from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Battle-Scar looks amazing my friend u have done a great coloring job from my opinion.

    Bootleg-

If there was ANY variant I was a little unsure would work well in this project it was BA He-Man, to me (And I think many others, he's as iconic as normal He-man), but even without your He-Man-Alpha design for comparison, you've definitely taken the toy design and made it into its own man.

He MIGHT be mistaken for He-Man's second cousin, but he's definitely non-subtle kinda-scary clansman

I like the profile very much too, definitely an interesting concept you've got going with the Power of Grayskull evidently falling difusely upon a GROUP of heroes.

    Can't wait to see more

    Battle scar is awesome Bootleg!!
But i have to be honest it's alittle hard for me to see some one else wearing the mega awesome Battle armor.

He-Man is the only one who deserves that privilage in my eyes.
Anyway the drawing is killer and the expression of this dude is scary, I wouldn't like to mess with him at a war zone, hell I wouldn't want to mess with him anywhere.

Yeah, these are Great and very inspired. I've alwasy felt that wonderbread He-Man was always another character with no name, but to make the varients into new characters is Just Awesome.
I see some of the 200X versions as their on characters too. IceArmor Skeletor for one.

    Great stuff!

This is an excellent idea. I love the characters you've been coming up with.

I can't wait to see what you come up with for Terror Claw Skeletor.

thanks for the generous comments everyone--i'm really glad you folks are enjoying this thread so far. i fell behind a little bit (stupid RL!) but hopefully i can get back on track and deliver the rest of the core variants to you folks in relatively regular intervals!

Glass Shrimp: thank you so much! i'm glad their looks are coming off as distinct--that was definitely a concern of mine when i started off on this little series.
coinilius: thanks, gotta love that Indiana jones! maybe the new movie will have some more material that i can swipe?
Patreek: thanks dude! your threads are all looking awesome too! one of these days i'll have some time to drop in and comment.
JafariStew: thanks buddy, it really means a lot. i do hope to get around to the 200x variants at some point... some of them are really too good to pass up (wolf armor he-man, snake crush skeletor etc).
Galvatron: thank you, i appreciate it!
DestrongerLupus: thank you D/L! i definitely agree with you--i thought both battle armors would be a tough sell, but they turned out decent... on the other hand, dragon blaster should have been a slam-dunk, but i'm not sure about the results... you be the judge! as for battle-scar's powers, the idea was not that he had received a portion of he-man's power of grayskull, but that he (and the other members of team grayskull) were the bearers of other, lesser weapons of grayskull's armory. none of this is really set in stone though. i have a loose idea of where i'm going with this, but a huge chunk of it is made up as i go along. i'm glad you're enjoying it though!
Mike Bock: thanks man! i did actually consider that some people might not be into the idea of battle armor he-man as a new character, so battle-scar (moreso than the others in this thread) was drawn with the idea that he could be interpreted by the viewer as an alternate version of he-man. at any rate, i'm glad you like the drawing!
Buffalo-Bill-Man: thanks BBM! i definitely want to take on ice armor skeletor... i think he and fire armor skeletor will probably end up being a deadly duo.
Darth Latveria: thank you--glad you're enjoying these. terror claw will hopefully be coming up in two weeks or so!

Today, I bring you Dragon Blaster Skeletor, now recreated as simply Dragon Blaster, another member of Skeletor's Elite. I've dubbed his previously unnamed pet dragon Paralyzor, a name which comes from one of the international versions of the figure, known as "Skeletor Paralyzor."

To be perfectly honest, I'm really not crazy about how this one turned out. The drawing feels lethargic to me, and the skull-motif face paint just didn't turn out the way I envisioned it. On the plus side, although I found it a struggle to get the colors to mesh, I think that part (at the very least) turned out reasonably well. This is one that I'll need to revisit someday, but for now I'm just going to move forward.

    * * *

PROFILE: From a perilous cliffside, about a day's ride from Snake Mountain, the air is sundered by fearsome draconic cries. The cliffside, riddled with a network of caverns, serves as a roost for Skeletor's fleet of dragons. The evil warrior DRAGON BLASTER walks silently and authoritatively amongst the trained saurian killers, charged with their care and training. His training techniques are cruel and harsh, revolving around the gradual break down of each dragon's will, accomplished partially through psychic conditioning. Dragon Blaster is a capable warrior in his own right, but prefers to let his 'pets' do the fighting. His favorite is a particularly vicious dragon named PARALYZOR, whom Dragon Blaster can only rein in with the aid of a bewitched collar and psionic chains. Paralyzor is name for his paralysis-inducing venom. In spite of his relatively diminuitive size, he is particularly pugnacious, and has frequently taken down fearsome beasts several times his size.

HISTORY: Dragon Blaster is, in his own twisted way, an idealist. Hailing from a long lineage of Infinitan dragon tamers, Dragon Blaster was raised on tales of Infinitan domination over man and beast alike. To him, the subjugation of dragons (who are perhaps the most powerful of all living things) is the ultimate symbol of Infinitan power. Skeletor, seeking to fortify his aerial cavalry, has taken advantage of Dragon Blaster's idealism by painting a vision of utter Infinitan supremacy brought about by a fleet of dragons with numbers so great as to blot out the sun itself. Thus, in order to ressurrect his ideal of Infinita, Dragon Blaster has joined the ranks of Skeletor's Elite. He cares little for the petty power struggles between ARMORAX and TERROR CLAW, nor is he interested in the machinations of Evil-Lyn or any of Skeletor's other lieutenants--very simply, anyone who stands in the way of the Infinitan cause will suffer his wrath. However, in truth, Skeletor only feigns devotion to Infinitan ideals to secure the power of Dragon Blaster's reptilian fleet. What will happen when Dragon Blaster discovers Skeletor's true nature?

It is worth noting, that in his struggles against the forces of good on Eternia, Dragon Blaster's vile enslavement of dragonkind has earned him the lifelong enmity of Granamyr.

Dude, I am so happy you posted this. I've been looking forward to a new variant guy and i was actually gonna pm you soon to see if you're still working on the project. I love these guys.

Edit: I was thinking about it and he sounds like a good nemesis for a fanfic character i created.

i can't believe i haven't posted in this thread yet...

i guess i wanted to see how this line would develop and thus far i have to say i think you are onto something here...a great expansion/add-on to classic MOTU...

of course i always look at these things with an eye to physical toys and some of these guys would be expensive/complex to produce...

i DO love a challenge, but perhaps Malbino first off...

she is still probably my favorite of these variant inspired character...very clever and well executed...

SAVAGE is a great starting place for this line, he is an obvious choice because the figure already exists and is also easily customizable using fodder pieces...either the maroon weps or newly casted charcoal ones and he is there...

i also like how he establishes a foundation that is essentially the same as the original he-man and the rest of the character/figures build out from that real classic "sturdy" base figure...

i think when you first posted this guy i didn't quite know how to take him, i had trouble seeing his differentness...but, now with time i have come to dig him, the battle damage is great from a design standpoint, but obviously makes him more difficult to produce because he needs all new parts from the waist down...

one thing we have discussed in the COTU is the need for a screaming classic He-Man head(ala 200X Jungle Attack He-Man) and of course Battle-Scar would make a great candidate for the usefulness of such a sculpt...first things first need to get a sculpt we are satisfied or some others to give it a shot...

i have to say i'm a little suprised that we haven't seen the bearded Platino style head used these guys yet...although not Mattel we consider it part of the "canon" parts palette and a great way to switch up He-Man "clones" to make them visually distinctive...maybe for Thunder Punch...

of course i would squeeze it in there as a "variant" anyways...

p.s. i hate the name Team Grayskull about as much as i hate Orko, so i guess it fits since he came up with it...
conceptually i'm diggin' these guys, especially Dragon Blaster...not sure if these would have newly sculpted legs in figure form, but i'm sure for the time being could get away with the evil skeletor legs(large or small)...

Armorax's ax from Diamond Ray of Disappearance is also something that we have wanted to do from pretty much day one...unfortunately, some things are more difficult than others and like the screaming He-Man head it still waits for the proper execution...

i can also see them potentially having different head gear to distinquish them more...like different helmets(roman, samurai, viking) rather than the cloak...

i'm also interested in how to realize the capes both in the Elite's and in a Skeletor as well...

anyways, critique aside i'm totally diggin' these guys and anxiously awaiting Thunder Punch and especially Terror Claws...

    keep 'em coming!!!

i'm way off schedule with continuing this series, but i want to thank everyone for their interest and comments!

Darth Latveria: thanks buddy! thunder punch is next up and terror claw should follow him (in theory).
Glass Shrimp: i'm so happy you dig skeletor's elite... after i get done with the basic classic variants, there are all the other new adventures and 200x variants that fit into a new concept outside of the elite. so much to do... must draw faster!!!
Patreek: glad you liked it, in spite of your disinterest in the original variant!
Galvatron: thanks man, i appreciate it! i hope at some point to draw some more dragons for him.
chrisbryan: thanks chris! it's taking me more time than i expected, but i'll get through these eventually!
Hordaks Henchman: awesome!!! i can't wait to see them!

thanks for dropping in man! when i first started these up, i was basically trying to come up with "play" alternatives--IE, if a kid was playing with his motu figures, who could "savage he-man" or "battle armor he-man" represent on the 'battlefield' (other than he-man). under that philosophy, my interpretations would be like the 'animation' versions of the characters--similar but not 100% accurate to the toys.

however, i've started to get away from that model, with more drastic changes on the upcoming redesigns--a custom terror claw or flying fist would need to be mostly made from scratch. so yeah, expensive and complex are about right. however malbino, yes... i hope i can make that happen soon...

thanks! once i came up with my basic idea for her, it all just kind of came together. to be honest though, bubble power she-ra is not formulating as easily.

savage was also a blessing simply because of his hair color. that made it so much easier to re-cast him as a new character!

actually, instead of new parts, i would suggest just using paint apps for the scars on his body. as for his torso, i would love to see someone carve in the extra gashes on the armor and give it a distressed iron-looking paint job. a screaming classic he-man head would be genius! a benign, smiling he-man (think filmation) would probably be a good idea too.

i considered adding facial hair at one point, decided against it. Thunderpunch does have mutton chop sideburns though. i like the bearded platino head, but so far i haven't found a place for it in my imagined customs... so far, i think of that head as belonging exclusively to platino... or prince snaker!

'team grayskull' was always meant to be an informal name, and the actual members of the team probably never refer to themselves by that. the familiarity and casualness of that nickname is also meant to contrast the regimented formal structure of 'skeletor's elite'. but yeah, connecting the goofiness of the name 'team grayskull' with the goofiness of orko was intentional on my part. lol... poor orko!

i think 'evil' legs would be the way to go with armorax and dragonblaster, simply because the way i drew their legs would not make for a particularly interesting leg piece. as for armorax's ax... i would think replacing the point on a he-man axe with a sphere would do it--of course, not being a customizer/caster, i'm not sure exactly how much work that would take.

the skull mask worked out okay on armorax, but the skull face paint on dragon blaster really didn't turn out the way i wanted--that's one i'm gonna have to revisit at some point. the bat-capes, i confess, are not really thoroughly thought out--i just like putting them on villains (i randomly gave them to evil lyn and shokoti as well).

poor thunder punch has had flat colors ready for weeks, i just need to finish him up and write upo his bio. terror claws and flying fist have been long neglected, but i hope to roll out all three of these before the new year. *crosses fingers*

Honestly, this is one of my favorite threads in the fan-art forum. Firstly, teh art is good, but what really gets me is how bloody cool the idea is. I love what you're doing with the Skeletor elite, making them look like Skeletor (which is reminiscent of what Cobra Commander does). Most impressively, is the fact that I HATE VARIANTS and you've found a way to bring them in as unique characters that really makes me like them. The only thing that bothers me is that that I didn't think of it first, so that i could incorporate them into the New Vision thread that I am working on with Wolfsfang.
thanks for dropping in man! when i first started these up, i was basically trying to come up with "play" alternatives--IE, if a kid was playing with his
think we'd all like to see them a bit different from their inspiration for obvious reasons ie we WANT them to be NEW figures...

i had a feeling this might happen too...sometimes the constraints we place on our concepts just HAVE to be expanded...

still anxiously awaiting both FLYING FIST and TERROR CLAWS...

yeah, that would work and if ya take out the damage spinning thing, it wouldn't cost TOO much silicon for a new and cool torso...

a screaming he-man head has pretty much been on the list since day one...i can't stand BUZZ-OFF's smirk, so i doubt we'll get to a Filmation style smile he-man head, but who knows...

or ANTI HE-MAN, or WEAPON MASTER FAKER...we just LOVE that head, so no exclusive use for COTU...

it is not as easy as it sounds, galaxy warrior has given it a shot or two... but i'm sure we'll figure it out before TOO long...

i'm still liking the idea of using SCAREGLOW's head on actual figures, or maybe something newly sculpted...all's i know is Skelly's head is just TOO similiar as far as the toys go...

Darth Latveria: thank you so much for kind words! your cobra commander comparison is very insightful. i'm really opposed to variants as well, probably because i come from the old school transformers school of thought--where starscream and thundercracker and skywarp were all separate characters, rather than being random variants on a single character. of course, today's transformers are plagued with the variant disease just as badly as any other toyline, but that's a conversation for another day and another forum. now, as for my whole concept of skeletor's elite and team grayskull, i don't want to let others play with my characters just yet, because they are a bit incomplete at the moment, and many of my ideas play into my own larger vision of the motu/pop universe. it's going to take me some time to finish fleshing it out, but when i'm done, you're welcome to mod my ideas for your own puposes (so long as i'm credited/cited). that is, if you still are interested by the time i'm done! thanks again for the interest and comments, DL.

Hordaks Henchman: OMG--these are AWESOME!!! thank you so much for building these customs and sharing them! i'll comment in more detail in the customs thread. everyone, check it out: http://www.he-man.org/forums/boards/...d.php?t=155099

for people who aren't familiar with my character malbino: http://bootlegsketch.blogspot.com/2007/04/here-comes-new-challenger.html

well, i think i can see what you're getting at here... in the interest of not duplicating existing official product, i would say that malbino's sword ought to be a powersword cast in clear-blue. that would distinguish it, and give it a magically powered-up look (i do prefer to keep the power sword idea, as it ties into my take on felinor, and the whole counterfeit power sword idea has becoming a running plot thread in the little fanfic bios that i write) as for other weapons... how about a complete set of each MOTU sword mold (triklops/fisto, jitsu/ninjor, grayskull weapons/wonderbread he-man, blade, mer-man) in clear blue? the "malbino pattle pack"... this would be a pricy enterprise, perhaps not worth taking on, but conceptually i like the idea of malbino being a blade master who possesses a collection of weapons, perhaps from fallen foes. something to think about anyways...

those were my initial thoughts as well... personality and power-wise, i basically can see who this variant will become, but visually it hasn't crystallized for me just yet. as of now, i'm streamlining her name down to "bubbles" (shower power catra is getting a completely new name).

i can see that and it is always an option...one thing i TRY to keep in mind with this stuff is there is no "official" or "production" version, EVERYTHING is a one-off so one can "play" a bit in the creation(thusly tons of "variants")...i can say i want the trik sword that fits into the armor for MY version, but there is always room for "extra" weapons and accessories...

where there is a will(and $$$) there is a way...also, there is something similiar to this is in the contemplation stages, it wouldn't be strictly for MALBINO of course, but hopefully by the time we get around to MALBINO this other concept will have reached fruition and he can benefit as well...

"great" minds DO tend to think alike...

hmmm... very interesting... i eagerly await more news on this front...

***UPDATE: ok, this is not quite the update anyone was expecting, but i hope you enjoy it:

As promised, here is a picture based on the toy version of Castaspella. If you haven't seen my cartoon verion of Castaspella, go here: http://www.he-man.org/forums/boards/...8&postcount=71

You will notice that I have changed her into another character. While the toy's packaging depicts Castaspella very much like her cartoon appearance, (bouffant intact), the toy itself simply had the hair tied in a ponytail. Because of the significantly different hairstyle, coupled with the toy's differing color scheme, I decided to make her into a new character. The name Sorciela is taken from an image I found online of international packaging for Castaspella--unless I'm mistaken, Sorciela is her French name.

I made a few minor tweaks to her costume, but for the most part, this is a pretty straight interpretation of the toy. I turned her spinning disk accessory into a magical ward--the symbols on it are nothing more than the symbols of the western zodiac. I rarely use a dark background color, but here it was necessary to accentuate the glowing magical energies. And the finishing touch; a super-nerdy bio...

    * * *

PROFILE: An extraordinarily capable magic-user, SORCIELA far exceeds the limits of most of her peers, but still requires focus and experience as a result of her youth. She specializes in hypnotism, but excels in this particular area to the detriment of her other magical capabilities. Sorciela can be impatient and frivolous, but her sense of compassion and fairness is true.

HISTORY: Sorciela is the younger sister of Castaspella, Mage-Queen of Mystacor. When Castaspella ascended to the throne, Sorciela was sent away to a hidden location. There were two motives behing this--first, so that Sorciela could continue her education in the use of magic, and second, so that the next in line for the throne would be protected in case any harm should ever fall upon Castaspella. With the Horde's presence growing ever more oppressive and She-Ra's departure to Eternia, Castaspella has summoned her sister back to Mystacor to aid in the defense of the country, and the planet.
