Rules for Submissions for Fan Character Round

For a long time I've been hoping that these development projects I've been running might lead up to an open round and well its finally here. ROUND 10 will be an open round with character submitted by you. It was suggested by Darth Latveria that I should set some rules and i agreed so here are the rules please read them carefully before submitting as I don't want to not include a character just because someone didn't read the rules. Thanks to DL for helping me come up with them.

The open round will run just like the other ones. We will be developing a character as a community. We can all give our input and help fully form the character, talking about everything from his BIO, to colors, to weapons - everything. These ideas can be offered up verbally or through submitting sketches. After all details have been discussed our official development thread artists and I will take the ideas tossed around and try to create a final rendering of the character trying to use as many ideas as possible. Then lots of art will be created like the stuff you are seeing here of Dragoona to display the final design.

1)Submit to Patreek a short description of your character VIA PM DO NOT post submission here! Everything should be in one SHORT paragraph and include some/all but no more than the following:
a.Name
b.basic power idea
c.Status (i.e. is he a general, or simply a grunt?)
d.Affiliation (Heroic Warriors, Evil Warriors, Horde, Snakemen, Rebellion, other, etc)
e.Miscellaneous – KEEP IT VERY LIMITED

2)If description is too specific, Patreek will either return it to author and ask it to be changed or suggest a revised version.
a.If author and Patreek cannot agree upon a revised version within given timeframe, character will NOT be used in poll.
b.Decision as to whether description is too specific remains solely at the discretion of Patreek.
c.Time limits for final, agreed upon revisions, will be 4 days from the time that Patreek contacts author.

3)ONLY things in original description of winning character are finalized. All things not covered in description, whether it be origin, powers or appearance, are subject to change regardless of original author’s wishes. In other words, to the author, once it's submitted it's out of your hands and you don't get any special say. If something is not in the original description it's fair game so don't whine if you don't get your way.

4)All characters must be submitted within 7 days of the creation of this thread. Be adviced though I suspect slots will go fast so get them in as soon as possible.

5)Maximum of one submission per author. Multiple submissions will only be accepted if final number of submissions is less than 10 in total at the end of the 7 day period, in which case more submissions will be asked for.

6)There will be a maximum of 10 characters in the poll and no more than 2 polls meaning at the very most 20 characters will be chosen. Character submissions will be included on a first come first serve basis. Slots will be reserved for characters who need revisions as per rule 2, but if the characters are not sufficiently changed the slot will be vacated and filled by the next character waiting in the queue.

7)You cannot submit characters that have been seen or debuted in other threads. The characters must be unique to this competition. Note: Patreek may make exceptions on a case by case basis.

8)DO NOT post character submissions in this thread, DO NOT post any information or art for the character in this or any other thread. I want to keep things fair. The idea that these are very basic concepts that we then all develope together.

9)All rules, in particular those respecting time limits and character limits, may be changed at Patreek’s discretion.

10)Final design after development will be decided by Patreek.

11)All authors who choose to submit implicitly agree with all rules stated above.

I know a lot of you have been patiently awaiting the revealing of Dragoona and that time has finally come. The first picture I am revealing is line art I had done at NYCC by an artist named Ed Coutts. This piece is being colored as well so check back for the colored version which will be posted this week. Total there will be 6 dragoona pictures presented here so keep checking back and be sure to let us know what you think. :-) Also feel free to post your own Dragoona pictures here if you feel like drawing her up in her final form. I'll be posting Dragoona's bio soon so also look for that.

DRAGOONA

Prologue: The Buttereens and the Beeans

One evening high above the skies of Etheria a battle was going on in between the stars. Evil forces on a far off planet had forced the Princess Flutterina to flee her planet and seek refuge elsewhere. The planet was called Sectoria and many insectiod races called it home. Flutterina’s people, a butterfly like race, was a peaceful one. Long ago it had formed an alliance with the Beeans and together the two kingdoms protected their realms from other more hostile insectiod races. Unfortuately the warring of these people had slowly been killing their planet.

Princess Flutterina knew that an evacuation was necessary, and while she hated to leave her home, a new world without these brutal enemies didn’t sound half bad either. And so, in the middle of the night the princess left her palace with only her most trusted guard to accompany her. That guards name was Sweet Bee and she was an excellent pilot. The pair hurried along into the quickest star ship in the fleet and left obit to find a new planet for her people. Meanwhile her kingdom and that of Sweet Bee’s was evacuated into a large hive ship that would travel behind them.

Part One: Evacuation of a stow away

Though the Beeans and Buttereens got along well interbreeding was looked down upon. Most children of mixed blood (nicknamed Fleeans) were considered an embarrassment at birth and given up or killed. Una was one of these mixed race children and was born to a Buttereen mother and a Beean father. Sometimes if you are lucky, most of one of the parents traits appear and the child is able to go undetected as an outsider amoung society. Unfortunately for Una, she lacked both her father’s powerful stinger and her mother’s beautiful wings instead having very plain completely transparent wings.

Not only didn’t she inherit these abilities, she had a birth defect giving her extra vertebrae in her spine and was unable to communicate pherimonally as well. Because of the extra vertebrae she walked with a limp and flying was virtually impossible. Also, she couldn’t communicate with her people in the polite way. (Speaking verbally was considered rude unless it was within the home and among family. ) Being that she was not able to communicate in an acceptable way, walk or do much of anything useful, she was shunned and was the focus of constant ridicule growing up.

When it came time to board the hive ship she was turned away by the guards and separated from her parents. As the doors to the ship closed she and the others like her stood in a large group, distraught and terrified of what was to become of them on this warring and dying planet. Though the idea of being trapped on a ship full of the people she hated didn’t sound great Una knew she would mis her parents, and she didn’t know what she would do without them alone on Sectoria. Luckily for Una she noticed a large stack of crates nearby full of supplies for the ship being loaded on board. Quickly she snuck into one of them, successfully stowing away.

Part Two: The Escape Pod

That night Una emerged from her hiding spot and set out to look for her parents. Guards roamed the corridors and Una suddenly found herself face to face with one of them. The guard immediately grabbed her and called for reinforcements. Not knowing what to do Una bit him and ran as fast as her disabled legs could carry her. Not sure of what to do she sealed herself into an escape pod only to realize that now she had nowhere to go. The guards found her and through the glass window pointed and laughed at her. Then they pushed a button on the wall. The pod disengaged and the flew out from the ship with Una trapped inside.

Terrified Una gazed out the window as the hive ship got smaller and smaller. She had spent her life full of anger at those who ridiculed her, but now the anger quickly welled up inside her and turned to hatred. They had deserted her in space, these monsters. As she traveled through space it was all she could think about; it consumed her.

Luckily there were emergency supplies and food in the ship and so, for now, Una survived. For months the pod traveled through space until finally while Una slept the pod entered a planets orbit and crashed. The planet was Etheria and by some weird twist in fate it was the same planet that Sweet Bee and Flutterina had found a month prior.

Part Three: An audience with Hordak

Gadgette had been looking into the stars with a powerful telescope when she saw a small ship enter Etheria’s orbit. She immediately notified hordak who sent a pick up crew to retrieve the vessel from its crash point in the fright zone. When the horde troopers arrived onsite they found a mangled yet still alive Una inside the crashed pod. They took the girl to Horde Central and she was given enough medical attention to keep her alive. She was then taken to see Hordak who was curious to see what had fallen from the stars.

Una was dumped in front of Hordaks thrown by the Horde Troopers. She collapsed onto the ground. Hordak gazed down at the mangled mess and laughed. “This is what you brought me?” Una could sense how Hordak felt and proceeded to speak defiantly. If it was going to be her last moments alive, she would not die ashamed of herself. She spoke of being an outcast and not being normal. She continued on about her hatred of those who judged her and her dislike of Hordak, for he too judged her.

Modulok who was looking on, jumped at Una and ripped one of her wings off. As Una cried out in pain, Modulok pulled the other out of her back. Una was now completely broken yet she still stuggled and fought back the tears welling up in her eyes.

Hordak smiled, he enjoying the fire in this insect, and saw an easy way to manipulate her. He looked towards Shadow Weaver who hovered silently in the corner and nodded. She came over to Una and began whispering into her ear. The words were words Una knew she could understand but for some reason she couldn’t quite grasp what was being said and what it meant, she felt dizzy and suddenly felt as if there was someone else inside her. She looked up at Hordak and he offered to spare her life in exchange for her service to him. He explained to her how she would have the chance to have revenge on those who judged her; a chance to be the judge. All the while Shadow Weaver continued chanting whispers into her ear. She suddenly was filled with a rage as if a million bombs were exploding within her at once. The years of torment had left a scar far worse than any cut and it was a scar that Shadow Weavers manipulation could take root in. With very little pause, Una agreed. Hordak smiled and then said “ good, then we shall repair you little bug.”

Part Four: Technological Metamorphosis

Immediately Hordak called for Entrapa, Gadgette, and the slave girl Inventra and together they along with Modulok took poor Una off to the Horde labs. Una was placed on a large circuit infused granite table and while the three technological mavens worked on creating a exo-suit for Una, Modulok started repairing her maingled frame. He started on her vertibrea, pulling them out from her back and connecting her hips and legs back to them a bit higher up. The he left the extra vertebrae attached however as Entrapa had plans for them. Next up, dragon blood.

For months Modulok had been experimenting with dragons and recently he was able to capture the famed dragon Dragoon. Entrapa’s exo-suit needed a power source and something to biologically fuse it to the girl. They also needed something that would give the girl enough strength to get through the surgeries and adapt to the suit. The dragon blood seemed to be the best material for the job. So while they worked on creating the suit Modulok slowly began introducing blood from Dragoon into Una’s system. As he worked Una felt a wave of emotions slowly emerge with in her. She felt as if she was transforming inside and out. Her skins slowly turned to a light shade of green and she felt her teeth begin to grow, one of them cut into her lip and she tasted blood. The taste was overwhelming…she felt… like an animal. She thrashed and knocked over a table holding Moduloks instruments, a few seconds later she was out cold.

Taken to a second secluded chamber, she was further mangled. Her body was repaired only to be mutilated again. After months of what seemed to be torture, Una was fixed and she awoke to find her body encased in a sort of mechanical exo-suit. As she came to, Entrapa’s robot assistant Gadgette the slave girl Inventra were placing the suits helmet over her head. Suddenly a whole computer array appeared before her eyes within the lens of the helmet. The words “System Start” flashed before her and suddenly she felt a jolt through her body as if someone had taken a mallet to her heart. Then it was the sensation of a million needles in that same spot and she could hear fluid pulsing into her body from the tubes connected to the armor. The words flashing in front of her eyes began informing her that the mechanical armor kept a constant supply of dragon blood coursing through her system. This magical blood enhanced her strength and ability to recover from the many surgeries she underwent while she was unconscious. She was also informed that her name was now Dragoona, Horde Sectorian Bounty Hunter.

Part Five: Dragoona's Abilities

She felt faster and stronger. Even with some large contraption on her back she was able to run and jump with little effort. Her old wings had been replaced and instead of the two bulky wings she had before she now had four slimmer wings and a fiery energy pulsated through them. The outcome? She could fly again now little effort. The jetpack that had been built into her suit and actually attached to her body via her extra vertebrae also made her flight extremely fast. Now no one from the hive could out run her.

While Inventra and Gadgette finished up the final tunings of her suit Modulok and Entrapa began to further explain to her new capabilities. They explained to her that she now had wrist mounted flame launcher that were part of her exo-suit. Apparently this was a special request by Hordak to signify her inner fire. How like fire she will consume all those who hated her and when it was all said and done she would have destroyed everything and she would have nothing left, not even herself. They explained that an unexpected side effect of the dragon blood coursing through her was that the air she breathed in was now for some reason converted to gas. To capitalize on this a spark was created near her mouth so that at will when she breathed out she could ignite this gas and breath fire. For her willingness to watch it all burn, Dragoona would become Hordak's tool. First a judge and then... executioner.

Dragoona felt completely changed, the girl she was a few months earlier still lurked in the corners of her mind but now she felt more primaly driven and fuller of rage then she ever had in her life, she also felt an undying allegiance to the horde but for the life of her she didn't know why. The next message displayed to her explained her first mission. Find and capture the rebel Sweet Bee and bring her to Hordak. Dragoona smiled, she knew of this Sweet Bee from her past life. Capturing her would be a delight, keeping her alive long enough to deliver her to Hordak would be torture.

Abilities: Enhanced strength, Fire breathing, Flight

Other information: Dragoona has a strong apitite for other insect based races friend and foe. She enjoys aquatic areas such as lakes, ponds, streams, and wetlands. Until she was found by the horde Dragoona was never able to really fly which was an ability highly regarded in her race. She always longed to fly and now that she could she rarely didn’t. Though she could now walk perfectly as well dragoona mostly hoovers and flys and when not flying perches on her long tail. She feels superior by not letting her feet touch the ground.

I like the idea of a more techno style insect character, since most classic bug characters had a natural or magical origin.


Beyond the Legends' picture looks awesome, it has all the power of the character, yet still keeps it feminine. I find the more heavily tooled version a bit too similar to dragstor or Mosquitor.

Her weapons and abilities are good. The rebels have an ice character, the horde now has a fire character.

I'm a bit of a Filmation purist lol, so I don't love the idea of Flutterina being an alien and not created by Light Hope. Dragoona having a history with Sweet Bee offworld is cool though. If I was going to offer an alternative bio, I'd maybe suggest Dragoona could be an agent of Horde Prime who caused the destruction of Sweet Bee's home planet and then came to Etheria to hunt her people to extinction, helping Hordak against the rebels at the same time.

Anyway, very fun character

I must say I think I like BTL's version better, because it looks like the carapace is semi-organic, which is sort of what I imagined it to be.

And hey! He sort of gave her blades in the form of insect-claws too!

The final origin has both it's pro's and con's in my eyes. A bit too hardcore for me, what with the Modulok-torture, and I'm not keen on Flutterina being a queen for her people, but Sweet Bee appears to not be.

Dragoona is built up as an utterly tragic character quite nicely however, and she has actual legitimate reasons for breaking down and giving in to the rage and hatred.

Wanna' know something funny? I thought that when you mentioned Flutterina in the development-thread, you meant that Dragoona would one day be metamorphosed again, when she had been rehabilitated from her rage, and turned into Flutterina.

A sort of classic "ugly duckling" scenario, but a bit more extreme.


I voted for Unicra btw, since I figured so many people would pick Wrap-thor, and she was the only other one that I think would really, really work as a staction. BBM did an amazing job on finalizing her.

Originally i was thinking of having her be more evil from the start, but as things evolved in my head this story just sort of came out. I had been stuck on it for weeks. I was excited to have BTL do a version that was a little more natural looking just because I think both looks really work for the character. Plus with POP you always had how they looked in the cartoon and how they looked as a toy, the designs were often pretty different.

I'm actually surprised at how well Wraptors doing but its cool I like him a lot, he was one of my first characters and the first DEV character so he holds a special place in my heart.

I'm so stoked to finally get to see Dragoona all finished up.

I really enjoy the origin, although I do have to agree that I'm not jazzed about the changeup on Flutterina. What's done is done, though, and it certainly doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the character.

I really enjoy Beyond the Legends' version - the hair and wings in particular. Even the longer tail doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would (though I still prefer the shorter, grapnel version).

The pictures are awesome but I don't like her background story. Sweet Bee's comes from a peaceful race that would never reject a child and eject into space laughing of her disgrace. I undestand it was made this way to justify her hatred and reasons to become a villain but this is something that would never be accepted in the MOTU/POP cartoon universe. My sincere and humble opinion.

I understand what a few people are talking about with regards to the bio, clearly in Filmation lots of this wouldn't fit in. When I write bio's I like to do them as realistically and cinematically as possible.

Anyway for the Filmation Purists here is an alternate bio short:

In the middle of the night many on Etheria saw a shooting star flash across the Etherian sky. One of these people was Hordak, but he knew this was no shooting star. A horde pick up crew was immediately dispatched. What they found was perplexing. A small craft literally only big enough for the body of a single person to fit into had crashed and the poor soul inside it was badly hurt. The troopers took the cargo back to Horde Central and delivered the girl and her ship to Hordak.

Hordak was ready to discard the girl into the Horde mines as a slave but he noticed the wings on her back and realized that this girl must have come from the same planet as that meddeling Sweet Bee. Hordak decided the girl may be of some use to him.

With the magics of Shadow Weaver he set about securing her mind in allegiance to him. Then Modulok, Entrapa and their helpers got to work repairing and upgrading the girls body. Using the blood of the famed dragon Dragoon, Modulok gave the girl a much needed blood transfusion. Meanwhile Entrapa used the girls ships as scrap to create a biosuit for her to wear. This suit would allow her to walk and fly again. It would also keep the Horde constantly informed of her actions. Hordak would have access to a button, should Dragoona (her new name) go awol all he would have to do is press it and the suit would go off line and dragoona would again be paralysed.

The girl, formerly known as Una had been on a mission to inform sweet bee of trouble on their home planet. Sweet Bee never got the message however and now had a new threat, Dragoona!

As for the tail, the one you see on the Chibi is official, what you can see though is that its retractable. Also the very end part with the spikes can fly out on that thin silver cord like in the first picture posted here.

Hey, just thought I would stop by and comment on the character too. I love the idea behind her. I told you I would post about why mine is so different, so here I am. Mine came out the way it did because her bio hadn't been written yet. I just thought she was supposed to be a mechanical or armored bug person so I wanted to make her a bit more feminine and a lil less robotic. Then of course right after I was done with her I get the bio. So I guess I consider mine a bit more organic armored and little less techno themed.

Oddly, I think my design looks alot like Axors' so I don't feel it is all that different, but the main reason I chose that design is because I wanted to add her to my line not just into the Horde. I amlost totally forgot about that. So my design reflects what she would look like were she part of the Shadow Force instead I guess.
