He's gone from playing a pirate to playing a cowboy.

Is it me or is he re-living his childhood? LOL

Ah you beat me to it. I think he would be an excellent Tonto or Riddler, the man is just that good an actor.

Personally, I think it would be funny if since he is supposed to play the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, then he should also be cast in the Batman movie as the Mad Hatter, rather than the Riddler.

Got NECA's Lone Ranger and Tonto today at TRU. Amazingly, they were only $14.99! I am so impressed with these figures. I'm not that into Western's, but I like the general feel of them. And I've always had a soft spot for the Lone Ranger. Not sure how the movie will turn out, but these figures are some of the best I've seen in this scale. Amazingly delicate details with the feathers and fringe on Tonto, for one thing. The paint is great too, though I had to look through the whole peg to find ones that I considered just right. They have very nice articulation, and Tonto has a sheath for his knife and the Ranger has holsters for both guns. One sad thing - I wish LR had alternate hands so it didn't look so odd when you put his guns away. But a fairly minor complaint.

    Very cool!

I'm mildly terrified of this movie... so much potential for awesomeness... so much chance of disaster..

I also have a soft spot for the Ranger, and am quite concerned they'll just destroy it... Similar to the Green Hornet debacle a few years back

That would make me very sad....

I thought Armie Hammer (who had a killer supporting role in J. EDGAR) got the lead role in LONG RANGER. Am I missing something?

Armie Hammer is playing the Lone Ranger, Depp is Tonto.

    Thank for that OP.

My VP Business Affairs produced BILLY: THE EARLY YEARS, with Armie in the lead role of Billy Graham. My friend Robby Benson directed. Both said Armie is a great guy, very talented and down to earth, despite the fact that his great grandfather was magnate Armand Hammer. I like it when good people do well.

The critics have been brutal to this. But I'm still going to give it a try.

Yeah I saw that too. They hated Depp in the movie too, from what I read. I guess the craziness worked for Pirates but not for this one.

From what I remember of the show Tonto usually said nothing, but I dont remember him as wacky.

You know what? I really don't understand what the critics were saying about this movie. I found it perfectly enjoyable. I think it had a lot of the same strengths and weaknesses of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp were a great duo, and I actually found a lot of humor and heart in much of the movie. Whether you like some of the wink-wink nature of the movie, I did not find it a soulless, cynical exercise.

Was it extraordinary? No. But I thought it was a fun summer movie and that's what I wanted. It has some very nice set pieces and even a few genuine moments of pathos. I didn't find the violence over the top at all, and to be honest I was afraid this was going to be a big, noisy and dumb movie and it's not that. In fact, there are some beautiful small moments and moments of quiet among the big set pieces.

The only thing I'd agree with the critics on is that it does feel a bit over long. Not by much, but I do think there are a few things they could have tightened up. I'm not sure what I think of the framing sequences with the elderly Tonto and the young boy. On one hand, it allows them to play with the timeline a bit, and it allows some Depp/child interaction which he's always good at. On the other hand, I don't know if it was necessary.

And, the Hiyo Silver thing at the end? I loved it. And it got probably the biggest laugh. The audience seemed to really like it overall at my screening. I hope audiences give it a shot, because I think it's actually pretty charming and fun.
