There is no reason to depart from the vintage color scheme
The old figure's torso was cast in a different plastic to the slightly softer arms, legs and (still really hard) head. The torso on some figures darkened over time, probably due to bromine used in the plastic. I'm guessing one of those was used as the reference material. Which would make it an error.
This same sort of thing happened with Extendar's metallic paint turning green due to oxidisation and Robot's shins going pink because of the pigment in the plastic under the paint bleeding through. Two-bad's right boot as well. One of the pink shin Roboto's must have been used as the 200x reference model because that's what ended up on the 200x figure.
Actually, didn't the colour changing happen on a load of the old figure torsos? I guess it was just easier to spot in those because those characters are so familiar.

I voted blue. He has too much black currently and makes the tire less noticeable. Not that it spins or anything.

Here's the vintage card art, too, for familiarity.
I doubt it was a discoloured vintage figure that led to the choice for a black torso. The 200x concept didn't have it, so it didn't happen there. I can't really think of any other figures where this happened before, either. :/
Fisto's silver belly, maybe? Even there it was a considered design choice and the chest was the same. In Hordak it's totally concealed my the armour.
Here I think it just looks like it's incorrect in black.

Wtf I could not wait for Dragstor to come out. The 4 horsemen super detailing him. C'mon look at the face he loooks like Walrus Man from Star wars no detail at all. The chest is boring with that stupid belt piece. Knobby tire, what happened to the Dragster slick. With this and the Snake torso debockle Whats Their Problem .image.jpg
I voted blue, as he looked in the vintage figure and comic (the only official version we have of him is that color). If it's too late to change, I may add the blue myself. Don't know why it was decided to be black, just another dropped ball on design.

Well since mattel seems to let the 4H be all loose with maintaining faithful to the most widely recognized versions of the figures. I mean perfuma should have been filmation. Who asked for the belt on mermistas tail piece. Who asked for the vintage toy wings deco on flutterina. So I say black is keeping in line with that hit or miss philosophy. So I voted black
Frankly I'm tired of how much liberty Scott and by extension mattel let the 4H get away with. If this were dc comics or marvel they'd have forced them to follow the style guides and iconic images
Still wanting to buy one more Point Dread Teela PM
please release accurate Filmation of-- tri klops, merman, fisto, roboto, kobra khan, hordak, grizzlor, mantenna. Leech, entrapta, teela, spikor, buzz off, whiplash, webstor, prince adam, rattlor, tung lashor, mekaneck, man at arms, sorceress, jitsu, ram man, man e faces, frosta, bow and perfuma.
Blue obviously. Not sure how Mattel missed this?
I'd like it blue. It breaks up the sculpt a little more interestingly. Also, more accurate to the vintage toy and art.
I would like that harness area above the red belt to stay black though. Looks great that way.
To begin with I was just thinking 'wrong' (black) or 'right' (blue).
If it was a decision made to improve the look of the figure and not a mistake, the wrong torso colour was not a good choice.
It looks awkward and jarring.
I'm open to the black harness, though.
It's interesting and the contrast isn't too bad looking at all.
But the geek in me wants it proper blue. Like it should be :P
I'm with Erndogg - what happened to his face? Hopefully it's just blown out in the pic and will have a lot more definition in the face mask in-hand. But just based on the pictures I'm seeing online, he does indeed look like a Walrus. I know some of that is the original design particularly around the eyes - but the lack of definition in the mask really makes the walrus "pop".
For the chest colour - I'd pick blue just to match the vintage, but I might actually prefer the black based purely on the look of it.
Oh - and just for the record, I really wish they'd put that extra tooling budget they used on BS Hordak into giving me a spinning wheel on Dragstor. Cool that's rubbery - but I want that thing to spin.
The problem with the black is it makes the wheel look like a gap in the armor rather than a wheel.
Yeah... I'm assuming/hoping that the lighting in the photo makes the silver facemask and tubes look less detailed than they are. I chose blue- like others said, I don't even know why this happened. I could deal with a black harness, but the black torso just looks like someone made a mistake.
"I am The Mad Bubbler... breathe in the vapors of my madness!"
Another comparison shot while I'm in the mood
I'm really not a fan of the black armour now that I'm looking at it. It's not that it looks bad, it's just that it actually looks like armour and it really shouldn't. It makes it look as though he's wearing that wheel rather than it's a part of him.
It looks sort of like Tri-Klops's armour.
One thing's for sure, that trunk not matching the limbs just looks wrong.

I really don't care about the character at all, but from a strictly aesthetic viewpoint, I think he works much better when his torso matches his legs and arms. The abrupt color change is just... odd looking. Like most others here, I just wonder why they made him like that in the first place.
