I made a custom of Classics Clawful a while back, and this is how I decide to accomplish the armor problem. I painted the body so that it's naked. I then sculpted the armor so that it doesn't go past the articulation point. It looks like his belly is exposed but it doesn't bother me much. The two armor pieces snap apart just like the classic toy does via tabs on the shoulders and sides. I also made it with snapping right claw just like the original.
