"GRAYSKULL" (He-Man movie) lands a new writer

    Hollywood Reporter:
    'Grayskull' lands new writer
Rookie scribe Evan Daugherty comes aboard He-Man project

Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures have tapped newcomer Evan Daugherty to pen the latest draft of "Grayskull," the studio's big-screen take on Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" cartoon and toy line.

John Stevenson ("Kung Fu Panda") is attached to direct the adaptation of the show, which followed a blond warrior named Prince Adam who, when uttering the magic words, "By the power of Grayskull -- I have the power," turned into the heroic He-Man. He and his allies -- Battle Cat, Man-at-Arms and Orko -- defended their planet Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor, who tried week after week to conquer the fortress Castle Grayskull, which imbued He-Man with his powers.

Warners sees the big-screen version as a gritty fantasy and reimagines Adam as a soldier who sets off to find his destiny, happening upon the magical world of Eternia. There, Skeletor has raised a technological army and is bent on eradicating magic.

Justin Marks penned the previous draft.

Landing "Grayskull" is a huge coup for Daugherty, whose only writing credit is the unproduced screenplay "Shrapnel." Daugherty wrote the script -- a character-driven psychological thriller about two mortal enemies on a hunting trip to the death -- to earn an NYU film-school grant. He was living at his parents' home at the time and paying bills by doing freelance video editing.

Daugherty didn't get the grant but entered an obscure screenwriting contest called Script Pimp, where he caught the attention of Jake Wagner of management firm Energy Entertainment. The script made the Hollywood rounds and landed on the Black List, while Daugherty moved to Los Angeles to pursue his writing career.

Daugherty additionally is repped by UTA.

On one hand I am kinda happy with this because, although there were some great things in the last script, but There were too many things that turned it way off for me.

Randor Dying, Adam Growing up to be He-Man vs Transformation. Zodac training Adam to be He-Man also the fact the script had a feel of some generic Medevil Movie.

On the other hand this guy is a Newbie and could do even worse

I seriously hope this is not the case! Isn't this part of the story originally written by Adam rifkin, who wanted Adam to be a soldier wandering the dessert in Iraq who just stumbles throught a portal. It's seriously lame... but this rumour just won't die!

    Is this for real?!?!

Don't re-imagine anything! We've got the source material. Follow it & it'll be fine.
Adam, prince of Eternia, Fabulous powers are revealed to him when the Sorceress bestows that power sword which he holds aloft & says, "By the power of Grayskull, I... have... the POWER!!!" The evil forces of Skeletor are trying to conquer Eternia while trying to obtain the power of Grayskull. That's the story we've had for over 20 years. Just use it Hollywood.

I think the problem here is that's only one of the stories we've had for over 20 years.

But I have to agree, Adam being a soldier who eventually becomes He-man is one thing, but Adam being a soldier from another planet who ends up on Eternia through a portal is really god awful whether you're a fan or not.

Although revolving most of the movie around Earth in '87 was a very smart move, I can't think of a single reason why they would need to do that nowadays. Seems quite the cop out.

I'm sure the "soldier" tag line is something that they've had laying around. Remember, that's been attached to the film for HOW long, and with Marks' script, that wasn't the case at all. Besides, the new guy will probably come in and change most, if not all, of it.
-But THIS MEANS THE FILM IS MOVING FORWARD AND THAT'S GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!

I am so sick of all this re imagining crap. LEAVE it alone. What made MOTU so good and popular was the way it was presented in the beggining.

    Skeletor IS MAGIC. PERIOD.

I want an Enternia full of magic and myth and LEGENDS. Thats what made Grayskull so mysterious was knowing it was truely magic and powerful, but not really know where it got its power, how much power it had and that skeletor was hell bent on getting its power to make his magic and power the greatest.

I HATE THIS SOILDER AND SKELETOR HATES MAGIC. Mattel, stop messing with things. Just hire someone who gets what MOTU is all about. Dont make another embarrassing 87 movie.

no one seems to be listening to us.

maybe someone should highlight in red in the first post that the reporter's info regarding the storyline is outdated so fans don't get riled up over something we got riled up over quite a while ago prior to getting riled up over the newest (officially commissioned) take.

FOR THE RECORD FOLKS! Warner Bros optioned the Justin Marks script NOT the Rifkin "soldier from earth, techno-ravaged Eternia script. so let's not worry about an old storyline that ISN'T BEING USED not to mention people seem to be glossing over the fact that they hired a NEW wiriter for a second draft of the JUSTIN MARKS script which has nothing to do with the Rifkin soldier from earth/magic hating skeletor script, which means the elements of the Marks script will be changing. so there is hope for those who hated that script to get more that they liked in it. this is a sign of hope people, SMILE!

I wouldn't worry about this, these journalists generally go with the last thing that they've heard, we've all read that the marks script has nothing to do with the rifkin one, and the marks one is the ddraft they accepted. check other entertainment stories they don't get the facts as right as they should. Remember the details of the marks script never seemed to get out to media outlets, but the details of the rifkin script did. I guarantee you that none of them even know there's a current MOTU toyline being sold and most of them have no clue that we had one this decade.

As of now let's just see this as a positive, a new writr on board for a second draft - that means PROGRESS!

As there is to-ing aqnd fro-ing in the entertainment press about the direction the 'Grayskull' movie will take, so too must there be within Warners. Just one look at the travesties and glories that are versions of 'Batman' tells you all you need to know - and that's with a property whose fans Warners attempted not to offend!
The "Bay" 'Transformers' movies have a lot to answer for - they could have been great, but we get Shia Lebouef, the least charismatic forced-upon-us star since Pauly Shore, and jokes about, ahem, playing withoneself. A lot of 'transformers' fans were seriously disappointed by that, but the movie made close to billions and so the formula is looked at jealously by other studios.
Peter Jackson is constantly referenced on these boards as a director in whom He-Man fans would have a great deal of trust and for whom wqe have a great deal of respect. He treated fantasy in the style and with the respect for an accurate period film. We need a talented director with confidence in the original vision who is also a fan to deliver the 'He-Man and MOTU' movie we need and want.

They are working from the Justin Marks script... NOT the Adam Rifkin script. It is ALL SET ON ETERNIA!

Skeletor raises a technological army... he preaches the purity of technology and downplays magic... BUT HE SECRETLY PRACTICES MAGIC AND SEARCHES FOR THE MAGIC OF GRAYSKULL! It's a ruse people. He's a villain. Adam starts the movie agreeing with his stance that magic is old, dated, useless, and that technology is the future... but it's magic that saves him... magic that transforms him... and it's within magic that his allegiance lies.

We'll see what mr. Daughrety does with Marks' blueprint. I was VERY happy with Justin's script and thought, that while there was room for improvement... it was a GREAT movie. I was raptured and flew threw the pages.

I have a lot of hope for this production.

Sounds horrible, and frankly, I'd go so far as to extend the Underline you added to include "gritty fantasy" as well, but I know most around here want it to be gritty.

Well since Evan Daugherty is an unknown quantity I'm going to be cautiously optimistic. Marks wrote the Chun-Li script, which was awkward and awful, so anything that moves away from his work is a positive. I just hope "latest draft" means dropping everything Marks wrote and starting fresh. Please make it exciting, fresh, and inspired Hollywood! Search out unique and talented concept artists, writers, cinematographers, invest creatively on screen, don't settle for a mediocre cash grab. You have the power!

A fresh vision would be nice and basically wiping the slate clean of Rifkin and Marks. I just hope Stevenson and Daugherty don't do something more ridiculous and outlandish like the rumored presence.

We don't need another 1987 and we don't need another Dragonball Evolution.

I can’t believe people are still talking about the Adam/Iraq rubbish. Justin Marks cleared that up in November 2007. Also, all the reviews of his script state, quite clearly, that it’s based entirely on Eternia throughout. What I want to know is are they throwing out Marks’ script and starting afresh, or is this new writer just going to write another draft of Marks’ same script?

Also, and this just makes me scratch my head, Variety broke yet another story today stating that John Stevenson has signed on to direct another film. That’s three films, including He-Man, he’s now attached to direct. Has he become the new Guillermo del Toro or something? Its gonna come down to him just doing the one, or none at all. I'm sure of it.

Krueger, please note that I already pointed out that Marks dispelled that soldier rumor in a ToyFare magazine interview in 2007 as well.

Again, I think the writer just did some searches and he found that false, dated, and old synopsis and didn't do any actual research.

But people were also attributing that plot to Rifkin's script which isn't true either.

I am really surprised any of you are happy about this being made at all (possibly)...and that some of you think that hollywood cares what you want...case in point: Transformers and GI Joe...they don't care, THEY WILL RUIN this too, I promise...in fact, they already started the hollywood transformation by calling it "Grayskull"

So don't get your hopes up, i am not being pessimistic or negative just stating facts on hollywood's track record.

I'm with you in hating Transformers 1 & 2 and thinking G.I. Joe looks bad. Even though I want this movie to be called Masters Of The Universe, if it's called Grayskull but is closer to its source than those other 3 movies, I'll be happy. Hell, if it was as close to the MOTU that we're used to as the 1980's movie was(but with better acting and FX), I'd be happy.

I'm VERY worried about how Masters Of The Universe will translate to the big screen. I didn't care for the 1987 version & I'm not a fan of how the other franchises you mentioned are being handled. I HATE how G.I.*JOE looks. I HATE the 1st 2 X-MEN movies so much & haven't watched the last 2. Hollywood strays SO FAR from the source material & it bugs me to no end.
After X-MEN came out 10 years ago, I had hoped that Hollywood would never make a G.I.*JOE, Captain America, Masters Of The Universe or Hawkman movie. Well it's all happening except for Hawkman & I am SCARED!!!

i found a little confort in this, specially the part where it says "There isn’t even a “single beat of comedic relief” in the entire script." if this turned out to be a goof like the transformers (unfortunatly) have become i would be FURIOUS for eternity!!!!1

Five Reasons Why Justin Marks’ Live Action He-Man Movie Could be Cool

Posted on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 by Peter Sciretta

He-ManEl Mayimbe has a gotten his hands on a copy of Justin Marks’ He-Man screenplay, currently titled Grayskull: The Masters of the Universe. Okay, may-be the title needs a little work, but Mayimbe insists that the screenplay a “fanboy masterpiece!” Here are five things from the script that has gotten us excited to see this movie on the big screen.

    1. This is not He-Man for kiddies! It’s written as a hard and edgy PG-13 film tinkering on the edge of an R-Rating. And remember, PG-13 is the new R. You can get away with so much more now-a-days, especially when set in a fantasy environment like Eternia.

    2. The story is described as “Lord of the Rings meets The Matrix meets Batman Begins.” An epic battle for Eternia which begins with the origins of He-Man, Skeletor, and the Power Sword. Prince Adam has to “overcome his selfish need for revenge and realize his destiny for the greater good of his people” and “find the Sword of Light” in the hidden Castle Grayskull and “unify his kingdom.”

    3. Included are Fan favorite characters Zodack, Mekanek, Man-at-armsS, Teela, Evil-Lyn, Trap-Jaw, Tri-Klops, Beast Man, Battlecat and Panthor. And best yet, Orko is no where in sight!

    4. All the corniness of the animated series is completely GONE. There isn’t even a “single beat of comedic relief” in the entire script. Treat the property with realism, what a concept!

    5. Grayskull is a geek’s wet dream, “the perfect marriage of Sorcery and Science fiction where in Eternia both Fantasy and Technology co-exist.” The script mixes “high tech, swords, and otherworldly creatures.” Imagine the possibilities!

I never thought I’d say this but I’m excited to see a live-action He-Man movie. It sounds like Justin Marks has done fanboys proud and has crafted a film with franchise possibilities. There is a lot A LOT more, I’ve only given you five little tidbits. Read the full script review over on LatinoReview

Yes, I want the original story line. I don't want Adam to be a soldier who somehow enters the world of Eternia to become He-Man and battle against skeletor who is bent on eradicating magic. That doesn't make any sense at all. Skeletor IS magic!

SIDE NOTE: I have to worry about Warner Bros. I heard they are wanting to re-imagine the Thundercats too to make them kids who front as a garage band. Some people should not be given the power that they have!
