Limited Edition MOTU Art Book at SDCC

    July 10, 2009
    By Matty

    Hey MOTU Fans!

Oh man, this is BIG… the design team at Mattel just announced the first book in their "Designed @ Mattel" series and it's a MOTU art book!

The book shows off the fantastic art of the MOTU brand from 1981 through current day. It's packed with never-before-seen Mattel concept art, behind-the-scenes notes, posters, oil paintings, and a whole lot more from across the brand. All that MOTU art from over the years is mighty sweet, but the book also premiers concept art from new projects, like a proposed live action film!

It's a soft-cover edition, limited to only 1,000 numbered copies. Each one comes with a numbered cover ribbon and an embossed seal. The first place they'll be available is San Diego Comic-Con. Purchases will be limited to two per guest, per wait in line. And get this… you can even have your copy signed by the Mattel artists at the show!

If any units remain after the show they may be sold on Mattycollector.com, but honestly, we expect to sell out at SDCC. Be sure to come by the MattyCollector.com booth early for your chance to own a piece of MOTU history!

We know a lot of fans are very excited about the Designed @ Mattel Vol. 1 book on MOTU being offered at SDCC. A few more details: The book will be softcover, 53 pages, with a numbered foil stamped ribbon across the cover. It will be $50.00 and limited to 2 per guest per line wait. It will have sections on all the major MOTU lines and a look at the future of the brand.

Now we know a lot of fans are asking why only 1,000 copies and will we ever reprint? The answer (at least for now) is that this was actually a number required. For a variety of legal reasons we were restricted to only create this book if we kept it as a limited edition. That was part of the bargain for getting to do the book itself. It was 1,000 editions or nothing He-Fans.

A big thank you to Toy Guru for pulling together a lot of the research and material as well as all the Mattel artists over the years for so generously giving of their imaginations to create lasting characters in the world of MOTU!

Long time fans and new comers alike will be sure to enjoy all of the surprises in store at SDCC!

    See you in two weeks!

I want one myself but lets just see IF it gets reprinted because I'm not able to go to the SDCC. Which of course it could be pricy at the show anyway.

OMG! Just 1000?!?! People are going to be asking for a kidney for this item on Ebay. I hope this gets reprinted very, very soon as I probably won't be able to afford something this scarce and this in demand!

It can't be ridiculously expensive if they expect to sell out at the show. And they wouldn't say that, nor mention selling any extras afterwards, if they had any intent to re-release it later in some shape or form.

And what's with the limit of TWO per person accompanying what is such a low run to begin with? Just trying to encourage a sell-out at the show, hoping that resellers get them for ebay... or what??? Because that now guarantees that the big collectible stores will have mass amounts of employees there grabbing 2 each for later sale.

The fact that those of us not able to attend SDCC this year - for whatever reason - will now have no chance to own one of these "must-own" books (other than getting one at an inflated price on ebay, but even those auctions will be scarce with only 1000 copies total) is not funny.

I'm one of those who would pay a large amount for this book, but may never get a chance to own one. It's extremely irritating to all of us loyal fans that are willing to keep putting money in Mattel's pockets. A bit of a joke, really.

Well on the one hand I'm thrilled they're doing this book but on the other hand I bummed that I won't be able to get it.

Hopefully they'll release a non-SDCC version on Matty in the near future for those of us who can't get go to SDCC

HOW HARD is it to produce say, 10,000 copies of this book, compared to 1,000??? This is not like a figure production run where things are much more expensive. These books should be relatively easy to produce, but instead Mattel is producing this item in extremely limited quantities and letting the hyenas get after them! VERY frustrating.

Yeah, it is a bit of a kick. We'll see with the ammount that shows up on ebay. They only offered 1,000. Thats the same ammount of Commemorative Series 10 packs that were made, and you hardly see those on ebay. So a good ammount may still fall in the hands of MOTU fans. Or toy fans in general.

Is this the way to reward the fans that have waited through your website problems over & over & over. The people that even though the economy is the worst it has ever been still will scrape up $20 for a figure. Now you take a book the the vast majority of others would love and only sell it to a select few who are lucky enough to be at the con. Wow this feels like a chase variant to me or a keldor. Way to keep the majority of fans from this line happy! Just my opinion and everybody has one.

Ditto. This may just be a test book. Who knows. I wanna say it is, and there may be an ad in it saying "look for the offical edition this fall" or whatever.
But I think we may see it released sometime soon ...

One thousand copies! Are you kidding! This blows! I've supported everything Matty has done so far but this is beyond belief. Open this up to more fans Mattel! I live in Connecticut and have a job and life, and now extra money to fly to the West friggin coast to attend an overpriced convention. Man I'm mad about this, and I won't pay ridiculous reseller prices for this. If anyone starts a petition to get this more widely circulated I'll sign it, even though I know online petitions are about as effective as a rubber nail.
    Rant over.

Did anyone give a STRAIGHT answer why they can't reprint they're OWN book?

It could be done as a REPRINT (Comic Book companies do it all the time and it doesn't tarnish the original)

Some REAL Answers would be nice...

Well, that is something special! I would love to have one myself. Too bad I'm not going. With only 1,000 in print, it will be even hard to get it on e-bay.

Holy Moses - I want one I want one!!! If anyone going to the con wants to pick me up one ... lemme know (neal at neal hunter hyde dot com). I would TOTES appreciate it! I'm so curious as to what kind of finds were made in the vaults (like the original eternia oil painting and stuff). So awesome! Wonder how long Val's been sitting on THIS knowledge :-) Musta been a hard secret to keep!

Mattel speaks on LE MOTU ART Book

I'm creating a new thread, 'cause it looks like the update could get lost in the other one.

This is majorly depressing. Scans probably won't be allowed to be posted either.

Well, that sucks, but this book sounds really awesome. If I have to resort to Evil-Bay, then I just might do that.
