    Answers to WTFWTK 2.114!

Mattel has once again provided answers to your questions.
Thanks again to them for taking the time to answer these!
Check out their answers to your Round 114 questions!

This round of questions were selected by I, Harbinger.
Thanks to that fan for their help!

    1. King Tamusk: Black Friday and Cyber Monday didn't see the return of the Horde Troopers Customer Service stock. What are the plans for the leftover Customer Service stock for the Horde Troopers? Since you refuse to produce more and add them to the evergreen shop, will you be selling the CS stock at some point?

To address both your concern and question, we are not "refusing" to go back into production on the Horde Troopers. The issue is that there are not enough customers to meet the minimum production quota we need to go back into production. We have done our own polling and looked at the threads on fan sites like this one, and even those threads that "count the number of additional Horde Troopers" people would buy are dramatically short of the minimum we would need to produce. While there are a group of very loud (online) fans asking for more troopers, this group is not even remotely large enough by any polling or thread we have seen to support a new production run. It is a clear case of fans being louder than they are numerous. If there is any CS stock left over of any 2013 figure they will likely show up in EA sometime in the next 12-16 months. But many figures from 2013 do not have remaining CS stock and are fully sold out.

    2. I, Harbinger: Will Mattel be using Rudy Obrero's gorgeous new artwork from the box of Castle Grayskull for any other merchandise like a lithograph or to license for tin totes, apparel, etc.?

It is possible but no firm plans right now. We want to give this art some time to live exclusively on the Castle box.

    3. wallbie: With Fisher-Price under the Mattel umbrella and Imaginext being a very successful fantasy/super hero/action brand for toddlers, has Mattel considered developing and testing an MOTU Imaginext line that could possibly even open the doors to a DVD pack-in like DC Super Friends? This seems like a great way to expand the brand recognition and appeal to a younger audience and draw in the adult collectors who enjoy MOTU on a smaller scale.

Something like this is always possible and the folks at Fisher Price are big MOTU fans, but nothing to announce right now.

    4. Sir Reilly: After Standor, what do you think about doing more Ancient figures, this time based on persons who were heavily involved with He-Man and She-Ra? Michael Halperin, Lou Scheimer, Alan Oppenheimer, etc?

Standor was a figure done to commemorate Mattel's partnership with POW Ent. We could have made a Stan Lee Hot Wheel or a Stan Lee Monster High Doll. Instead, as a company, we commemorated this partnership with a Stan Lee MOTU fig. Doing other Elders of the Universe in the likeness of men and women who worked on the vintage MOTU line are not in the hopper right now for a few reasons. Mainly because we are using every slot and resource we have to complete the vintage roadmap by 2015. If figures like this are what fans would like to see in 2016 and beyond (assuming we get there, we don't even know for sure 2015 is happening until the sub sells in at SDCC) we would love to hear from you!

    5. Kent Parker: Now that Castle Grayskullman has had his year and people are starting to get their Castle Grayskull playsets to coincide, has anything developed yet as far as the other Creat-A-Character entries? Any chance we'll get see others that we haven't seen yet, maybe even just the ones who made it into your star search round? Even better can we show off our own creations yet, maybe done by a different artist or medium? Might be cool to see these in some slide shows in the future like they did the spectormobile.

We do have big plans for the other runner ups. Keeping hanging in there!

Really a let down about the Horde Trooper. Not enough people interested, Really? How many interest customers do you need, 100,000?

    Me too.

Honestly, I felt some of the runner ups were just as good if not better than CGM.

But many figures from 2013 do not have remaining CS stock and are fully sold out.

This is a load of horse **** Mattel! As far as I'm concerned, your "own polling" isn't worth ****. The reason you won't go back into production is because you don't have another subscription locked in for another production run, not because you've somehow scientifically figured out there is less demand than noise. You cannot argue there is or isn't enough demand from silence. On top of that, you haven't asked! All you've done is say there isn't enough support and you simply cannot know that by looking at a couple blogs online. There is clearly more demand for the return of the Horde Trooper than most of the figures that have been released so why don't you ask the people who've subscribed if they'd commit to a certain number of Horde Troopers? Why not include the Horde Trooper in a Club Etheria Subscription? Why not find a way to actually gage what the true demand is by offering the opportunity to commit to something like you've been doing since 2009 and let that speak for itself as a responsible estimate of how many people want more Troopers rather than getting your numbers from a couple online posts? Simply put, your answer to this genuine question about the Horde Troopers re-release is both un-creative, lazy and amounting to nothing more or less than your own lack of interest in the matter. You people need to wake the hel up because you could make a killing on these, especially with another large scale commitment.
It's all about being polished when it counts!

Not enough fan demand, huh? Unlike the customer demand for Nepthu...right?

This is a really lame excuse. First of all, not every MOTUC customer uses these forums and replies to the polls. Second, you never made any attempt to officially ask if interest was there with your own poll, so how would you know? You claim you did your own polling...where?! Where and when was this poll? If no one knows this supposed poll existed than it would explain why you didn't get proper feedback.

The Horde Troopers are an Army builder. How is anyone supposed to "army build" if the product isn't available for them? These should have one more run, at least. That's just common sense.

You can't keep going back to the "loud, but not large" excuse when you are willing to make a figure like Nepthu, who had little to no demand at all. If you're going to give an answer, let it be one that actually makes sense and isn't just some brush off reply. This obviously has nothing to do with the actually demand seen written in fan forums. You have other plans or reasons and you are keeping them to yourselves. And that's fine, but don't give reasons that are contradicting with past behavior.

I understand what Scott is saying about the Troopers

But there's a science to polling and taking samples.

You're supposed to measure using a small representative population to get an answer to your hypotheses, not just look at random information and count numbers literally.
Even then there is a margin of error but I think it would be more precise if he was using sampling as an escape not to produce more.

Not sure whether I could stretch to buying figures of the runners up in the C-A-C contest. I'm a completist, and all, but none of them struck me as figure worthy... I would, however, be interested in buying a nice coffee table style book with art in it and the like. That would be nice

At least it wasn't a flat-out no. It's interesting to know that Fisher Price has "big MOTU fans" on the inside. Still would be cool to one day buy my son some MOTU Imaginext to go with his Justice League and Toy Story guys.

I wouldn't mind seeing some of the runners-ups as action figures, though what the best way is to handle their release right now is beyond me. I wouldn't welcome Major Header as a subscription figure, nor do I want them as a sub-line (save that for finishing NA, Filmation, or PoP!)... but if they could sell these outside the sub like they did with Bubble Power She-Ra and Sky High, I would be okay with that

biggest problem with the answer about the create a character contest is that he didnt answer the question as I understood it.

We wanted to know about ALL entrants, and about the possibility of us showing them to each other ect, without getting into trouble.

Not what they may do with just the runners up. Honestly I dont care about the runners up. I actually didnt like any but major header. I dont particularly want to see much about them in MOTU specifically.

I want an answer about what they are going to do to allow us to see the entries as a whole, not just their runners up which we have already seen. Am I wrong or was the question about allowing us to see the entries, not what Mattel is going to do in MOTU with the runners up?

I wasn't overly impressed with some of the Runner Ups, but I would happily take figures based on them (or any of the many submissions from local buddy of yours, Uki...oh wait, that's me...)
Not to sound like a creepy cheerleader for Uki, but it's nice to know there is at least one person on this forum who is extremely positive & friendly all the time. I don't think I could be that nice even if you paid me. If we ever give out awards for "forum member of the month", Uki gets my vote. -Mr. Shokoti

Its like StormTroopers, guys buy several and always add on
I certainly think people would be more likely to purchase more troopers than some fan creations

I do think they've under estimated the demand for Horde Troopers. If they did pre-order I'm positive they'd meet the minimum, but if they'd didn't the then they've not lost anything. Just seems like they're leaving money on the table to me.

I really hope we don't get figures of the CAC runners up at this point. With the limited slots we have left I'd much rather them stick to the priority of finishing the vintage MOTU, NA and POP line up's.

Why did you ask, then? You had to have known that the possibility existed you would not get the answer you wanted. Did you ask just so you can then voice your indignation on the forum in response?

    Well it seems...

Question 1: NO more Horde Troopers until the budget gets healthy again. But at this point in the road, probably never.

Question 2: We're not interested to print something you all want, so stare at your box a lil longer.

Question 3: The fact that the Overlords of Mattel do not have a 100% vested interest in making MOTU anything more than a fan collector series for now (as we wait to see what we can make with the movie) the idea of cross merchandising is a no.

Question 4: The Standor figure was to commemorate something we still haven't revealed (to be fair with Mattel, on both ends) and considering Mattel seemingly shows a lack of enthusiasm with their own brand (MOTU) working with Stan Lee seems just as interesting to them as well, but then maybe we'll be surprised in the future?????

Question 5: Well even though we said one thing about the C-A-C we gonna do something else; which IN THIS ONE CASE I'm glad cause those were some great concepts and it helps expand the line!

'Tis the wind and nothing more.....

You want an honest answer? The minimum order the factory in china would require from Mattel is exactly the same amount Mattel ordered for 2013 subscription year. So yeah you are talking in the high thousands and so far here on the org alone the count is still under 600, not sure about other sites but for mattel to say no for these reasons it's becausethey just don't see enough fans to justify it and Mattel has to front the money to pay for the product and they don't want to be stuck sitting on a bunch of Horde Trooper 2 packs that they have to pay storage fees on because they didn't sell enough. Believe me if the fan numbers were there Mattel woud go back into production in a heartbeat they like to make money.

Also before you say they could order less troopers from china The way it works is The factory has a minimum quota for a certain price Now because mattel already placed the initial horde trooper order they have to order the same exact amout again. anything less than that and the factory charges mattel a lot more money to go into production and in turn mattel will have to charge a lot more than $55.00 per Horde Trooper 2 pack.
Looking forward to the entire 2014 line

If you listen very closely, you can hear a Horde Trooper beating a dead horse somewhere...

C-N-C: The only one of these that I would be enthusiastic about would be the head-on-a-chain warrior. MOTU has lacked a headless horseman type character and the idea of using the head not only as a decoration but as a weapon is quite cool.

Horde Troopers: I do think Mattel should have produced more of these for the original sale, but I do understand where TG is coming from. Mattel would have excellent sales records of which MOTUC customers purchase army-builder figures and how many based off the Palace Guards, Snake Men and in terms of customers who will actually buy Troopers in big numbers, they probably take a guess at those customers (not re-sellers) who bought 4-5 Shadow Beasts and Griffons. If their analysis is that based on the number of Trooper paks sold vs number of historically known army builders etc, that there would not be enough demand for another production run it is probably a sound assessment.

I have to say the number of extra Troopers demanded on the .Org thread was not very high. I think the last time I contributed to that thread I said I needed another 18 paks. Since then I have sourced the Troopers I need off the secondary market. I now have an army of 52 Troopers plus a He-Man/Hordak head in armor set and a MOC pack making up 28 packs in total. An army of 50 troopers was my target which I have reached (exceeded), of which only 4 paks came from direct Matty via my subscriptions.

If Mattel have been watching the secondary markets, they will know fans who really desperately wanted to build their armies have had the opportunity to source enough figures. Certainly I have done so without much problem and every one of them purchased under the unit price plus shipping limit I set myself.

If Mattel offered the Troopers again, I am not sure I would purchase any extras, even at the regular sale price (which is obviously cheaper than what I have paid unit price on the secondary market). I would have to assume other collectors have also availed themselves of the opportunities to build their armies. Certainly Mattel could be excused for making such an assessment in determining whether they believe there is enough demand for a second production run.

Am I frustrated that I had to go to secondary market and pay more than if Mattel had made enough for me to buy via Matty? Yes. Given the number available on the secondary market can I confidently say not enough were made in total to meet actual demand? No I cannot say that as I personally have been able to source all the Troopers I need, and within my budget.
