Is it me, or do the demons kinda look like Caligars?
Take a look at my deviantart. http://kaassouffle.deviantart.com/gallery/
I bought page 23, it just came. Looks much nicer in person then in the scan, even if it is just rough pencil. Beautiful! Nothing on the back though.
Take a look at these quotes. It may be interesting / useful information.
Let me preface by saying that Whitman Comics was a subsidiary of Western Publishing.
Now look at this:Western decided to end its partnership with Dell and publish comics themselves, and set up Gold Key Comics. This continued until the late 1970s, after which newsstand distribution was discontinued in favor of distribution to toy stores etc. under the "Whitman Comics" banner. They stopped publishing comics in 1984, and all their licenses have since gone to other publishers.
EDIT:Mattel bought Western in 1982, then sold it off in 1984. Under new ownership, it renamed itself "Golden Books Family Entertainment" and tried to focus on children's books.
So what does all of this mean?
Well, for starters, Mattel didn't just have an account with Western like in the quote that Sallah posted. They actually owned it. So the question is, since this comic was essentially done in-house using a Mattel owned brand, does Mattel still own the rights to this like the mini-comics....or does ownership to this go to Golden Books Family Entertainment? It's not like a DC comics situation where they licensed it out to a different company.
I dunno the answer. But guess who owns Golden Books Family Entertainment? Classic Media. Maybe they have the rights to this origin story?

Got my 5 pages today! BEAUTIFUL stuff! Page 8 and 17 are my favs of the batch!
No notations anywhere, unfortunately.
LFE and I are progressing with this, and have a few holes in the history filled already, but we still have a few people to find before we can definitively nail it down. Keep your fingers crossed!

I'm excited!
Wow, I need to check this section more often. Some amazing stuff!
Just so people know, there is still a piece up for sale on ebay. It's an incredible piece, and i'd get it in a heart beat if it wasn't so far out of my price range!
Man, this is actually a bit suspenseful! Are we going to find out the origins of the... ORIGIN OF HE-MAN?
It would be amazing if this actually predated the mini-comics, wouldn't it?
Someone should ask about this in the Q & As on the MOTUC forum. Since Mattel owned Western Publishing during this time period, I would assume they have to have some record of it. Plus, it's their brand.

I think this predates anything published on MOTU.
The character designs of Man-at-arms and Skeletor, they are very early.
Skeletor's face is very like the first prototype figure ie. more fleshy and we know his very first face on print in the first minicomics was totally fleshless.
