MOTUC Q&A's From Around the Net (8/16/2010)

    Kitty's Pryde

1)Matty, amazing lineup of MOTUC figures on the horizon! We all love that King Grayskull and the Palace guards are coming out but having them both in November with the Sub figure Grizzlor is quite a lot at once and with the overload to the server every month it has alot of us worried. Any chance that we can get either Grayskull or the Palace guards moved to October or December? That way we all have a better chance of getting the figures we want.

It actually is looking like the Guards will slip out to December. All dates announced at SDCC are subject to change and we will have a final availability as we get closer to the fall.

    3) In Count Marzo's bio, it is mentioned that he is a fifth degree wizard. What would be the uppermost degree of magic and what are the degrees of magic for Hordak, Skeletor, King Hsss, Evil-Lyn, Sorceress and Orko?

You’ll just need to keep reading the bios. We do have a lot of these things worked out but are not spilling the beans in a Q & A as to who is more powerful than whom.

    5) Thanks for the sneak peeks at the next two DC/MOTU 2-Packs at Comic-Con. We know you cant do a fans choice MOTU figure, but would you consider doing a Fan's Choice 2-Pack of already produced figures with predetermined pairings? It would be a great way for the fans to be involved while not having to make new molds.

It is a good suggestion, but the DCU vs MOTU two packs involved a bit more logistics due to the pairing of multiple properties so this is not likely to happen anytime soon. The best way to suggest figures is to post on the boards. We do read all the suggestions
    MOTUCfigures.com

1.) Many of the current hot toy lines have a separate stylized line devoted to a younger audience. With the growing popularity of MOTU Classics, is there ANY chance of a MOTU line aimed at younger kids, possibly with new characters?

This is something we look into but nothing to announce right now.

2.) After upping production, She-Ra sold out in around 20 minutes, Marzo around 50 minutes. Will production be increased again due to these still relatively fast sellouts, and are you taking the fact that most folks will buy multiples of things like the army builder packs when deciding on those production numbers?

We are constantly updating and changing out production runs. We actually brought just a handful of She-Ra figures to SDCC and did not sell out. So we take that into account as well when reviewing future runs.

3.) When the Grayskull stands get released again next year, will any changes be made? Many folks have complained about the overall quality and the amount of pegs included...

They will be the exact same offering. No changes.

4.) Is there any way of giving fans a tentative list of what reissues will be coming next year? The list wouldn't have to include definitive dates, but hearing exactly which figures are coming back next year would help fans in deciding which characters they don't need to turn to the secondary market for.

Sorry, even a tentative list changes too often for us to announce the full year. Not every month will have a reissue but many will.

5.) Will the Cosmic Key included with Preternia He-Man be able to separate from the handle? It looks as if it was designed to match the Gwildor toy, which is cool (and a hopeful hint that Gwildor is coming sooner rather than later), but it would be nice to be able to display it sans handle...

The prototype at SDCC was the hand-painted sculpt from the Horsemen. The final toy will be a completely removable accessory just like with any other figure. Many of the prototypes have permanent accessories in the hands for display and review but this does not represent how the final product will be.

(NOTE- Obviously, there was some confusion on that last question as it appears Matty thought we were asking if the Key was removable from the HAND and not the HANDLE piece. I have an e-mail into them now to clarify this. I'll update once I get a response.)
    Poe Ghostal
1.) Where did the bio art for Gygor come from?

It came from the vintage Big Jim’s Gorilla box. We scanned it and then re-colored it.

2.) One common MOTU trait is balance. Since we’re getting a Shadow Beast, Gygor might have served as the perfect “good” counterpart to him, just as Battle Cat is the counterpart to Panthor, Stridor to Nightstalker, and Tytus to Megator. Setting aside the question of whether Gygor had ever been intended to be good or bad in the 1980s, why did you make him evil in Classics?

Gygor was never actually produced and never appeared in any entertainment so there really isn’t precedent for whose side he is on other than fans’ imaginations from an early image/description of He-Man on top of Gygor. In the end, all MOTU figures are avatars of fan’s imaginations and you are welcome to make him on whatever side you want!

3.) In the 1980s, the constant re-use of the basic molds for MOTU resulted in softer detailing in later figures as the molds aged. Have any steps been taken to prevent this from happening, since MOTUC is tentatively planned out through at least 2015?

Sorry, we can’t share logistic strategies like this publicly, but we are well aware of the long term use for the MOTU tools.

4.) Is the Mer-Man from the Aquaman/Mer-Man 2-pack the shade of blue as Faker/Skeletor etc., or will he be more of a teal in the final release?

The figure shown at SDCC is very close to final. It is a light blue, like in the mini comics.

5.) The items coming out for MOTUC in 2011 look fantastic! But it seems a bit misleading to refer to the Club Eternia subscription as “all-in” when it excludes several major items–specifically the “diorama environment” and the Q4 vehicle, both of which most fans who have subs are sure to want. Why were these excluded from the sub, and is there any chance of offering an early “opt-in” for subscribers who have already committed to giving Mattel nearly $500 next year?

Quite frankly we don’t know how many of these items we can and/or want to do and need the freedom to adjust based on fan interest and logistics. Not including them in the sub gives us that flexibility. Leaving some items out lets us craft the line as it fits best.
    http://www.maitresdelunivers.org/

    1) You revealed during a Q&A that Panthor won't be shown at SDCC, and fans were expecting to get it for 2011 but it seems that the 2 beast we will have will be Shadowbeast and Swiftwind. Is Pathor delayed to 2012 or is it canceled?

Panthor is coming in 2011, we just have not shown him yet.

    2) During SDCC, the Four Horsemen showed at their booth a prototype of the Battle Ram (which I personnaly find awesome!). During Mattypalozza, you said that the 1st vehicle will comme in Q4 of 2011. Is Battle Ram this first vehicle, or do you have in mind a smaller vehicle (such as Road ripper for example) to test the fans response to this?

We aren’t ready yet to announce which vehicle we are doing. The Battle Ram the Horsemen did was just for fun – it is pretty cool though!

    3) In the 1988 French dealers catalog, we can see a photo of the "guet-apens" see picture here:

Mattel code for this is : 7260. This toy never made it to the shelves. Do you know if this toy had been to a more eloborate status than this prototype on the photo? If yes, could it be possible to get a picture of the finnished toy at least the status it was at the end before it was canceled?

From what we can tell, this vintage toy never made it past the prototype stage.

    4) Do you have the rights to create toys of some characters from the New Adventures of He-Man cartoon? Crita or Sebrian could be great as action figures!

We only have rights to characters that have already been made into toys. If they appeared only in the animated series we do not have rights, except for Darius who was a Mattel prototype but never released due to the action feature not working properly).

    5) When will we be able to see "the small diorama pieces" you mentioned during Mattypalooza? It seems to be very interesting and some of the fans dream to get a castle grayskull to assemble pieces by pieces!

We did hint at one with an image in our panel and a display on our booth on Sunday.

    1. Will MOC collector's have a chance to purchase "Powers of Grayskull" stickers for their He-Ro and Goddess- figures?

It is something we are looking into, but nothing to announce right now. A great idea though!

    2. One of the palace guards reminds the fans of a person connected to MotU. Could the guard's real name possibly be "Captain Neitlich" or "Scott-Or"?

The real name of this figure is “Lt John Spector”. The name comes from the toy idea Scott “Toy Guru” Neitlich submitted for the MOTU to create a figure contest back in the vintage days. Since this guard figure was sculpted with Scott’s face (The Horsemen are just cool like that), the brand team was nice enough to let him name this figure. He named it for the character he submitted as a kid to the contest (incidentally, the figure he submitted was not a Royal Guard but an entirely different concept; he just used the same name).

    3. After seeing the weapons rack as "small diorama piece" for 2011, will it be empty or filled and -more important- will a whole weapons pak fit into it?

You’ll need to wait and see. But we have some surprises!

    4. Grizzlor's face will pop off and his head is non-removable. But can it turn around?

His head is fully articulated but it will not pop off due to the fur.

    5. Now that people decided about Swift Wind's color, will he be called "Royal Swift Wind" or simply "Swift Wind"?

The name will be Royal Swift Wind.
    Figures.com

There were several subtle MOTUC hints at the Mattel booth at Comic-Con this year, such as the Screech perched on top of Castle Grayskull. Is this a hint that the Sorceress will coming in 2011?

We actually had that same bird on display at SDCC 2009 if you look close. It is a hand-painted sample we did to liven up the diorama. We do plan to get to the Sorceress in time, but this hand-pained Zoar is not a hint of anything other then us wanting to do something fun in our display.

Can you please shed some light on the dark green horned helmet that was on display next to the Godess figure on the last day of Comic-Con?

It is an accessory for a MOTUC toy not shown in full at SDCC. You'll just need to wait and see who it is for.

Many collectors have been anxiously wanting to see how Panthor will look. When will fans get their first glimpse of this highly-anticipated figure?

This will happen in time. He is slotted for 2011, but at SDCC we only showed through February/March. There is a lot more 2011 product to show off!

We are very excited about the MOTUC SDCC reveals this year. Can you give us more insight on the army-builder two-pack and Shadow Beast in regards to pricing?

The Guards will be $40, Shadow Beast will be $30.

Will the army-builder two-packs always consist of two solar characters such as palace guards or can we also get different characters that belong to the same faction/army? (For example, a Kobra Khan and Rattlor Snakemen pack)

At this time the plan is to offer two of the same type of character with mix and match parts. That does not rule out other two-packs, but the army builders will follow this strategy.

When can we look forward to seeing a 200X version of King Randor? Perhaps a Captain Randor from the first episode of the MYP cartoon?

In time. Nothing to confirm now, but we do want to get to this look for the good king.
    http://www.motucportal.com/

    1. The packaging for the Eternian Palace Guards show the boots on the guards to be the Keldor boots in tan vs the actual figures displayed showing the standard He-Man boot with the Man-At-Arms armor over it. Can you confirm which boot will be on the final product?

Yes, the final figure will have the “Keldor” boots. The version shown at SDCC was a kit bash for the show. The Horsemen designed the figure with the Keldor boots.

    2. We love the concept of several "He-Man" protectors / defenders of the 2 halves of the power sword over the years. To date we have He-Ro, King Grayskull, then the various "He-Man" (Vikor, Wun-Dar, and Oo-Larr) leading up to Prince Adam. You said in one of our previous Q&A's that Keldor did indeed wield half of the sword at one point in your MOTUC canon - can you say who was the He-Man defender at that time? Some have speculated Keldor might perhaps have been a "He-Man" defender gone bad?

You’ll just need to keep reading the bios. We’re not about to spill the beans here!

    3. So ToyGuru how's it feel to be immortalized in MOTUC as Lieutenant Spector? We think it's fantastic however also think the figures real name should be Scotty N. Spector

    From Toy Guru:

“I’ve gotta admit it is pretty darn cool to be immortalized not only as a toy but as a MOTU figure. As a lifelong toy collector and Masters fan this is pretty much a dream come true and makes the long hours worth it. Maybe when my daughter is old enough she will play with her dad’s figure. How cool would that be?”

    4. SDCC was great but where is the NA character love?! Can you confirm if we'll see another NA character released in 2011?

There will absolutely be New Adventures in 2011, but it may not be until the second half of the year. Remember, we only showed through February/March at SDCCC, there is A LOT more 2011 to reveal!

    5. Pre-Eternia disguise He-Man - is it too late to have his wrist gauntlets changed to the style of the TRU He-Man release as that style is style accurate to his comic appearance?

We have discussed this with the Horsemen and will indeed be making this change!

    Pendragon's Post.

SOTA had extra heads with every Street Fighter figure until it's final waves and the extra heads didn't lose their value.

    From TheRumorBuster.com

    4) Regular MOTUC figures have been re-released, but will the weapons packs or larger figures like Tytus ever get re-released?

Yes. Battle Cat and Tytus have been scheduled for a re-release as have the Grayskull stands. No re-release plans for the Ultimate Battle Ground Weapon Pak yet, but maybe in time.

    5) Now that we’ve got Action League style DC figures and WWE figures, can we expect to see the Masters of the Universe license get the Action League treatment soon?

Definitely something we’d love to do. Time will tell! .
The page does not focus at all on MOTU, mostly small scale superhero toys, but I thought it worth posting.

Yeah, *** was that all about? Surely they can not be serious about that. Why the hell would they even use that to gauge interest in a figure? A lot of people probably didn't even know she was available at SDCC.

But wouldn't most people checking the Matty Booth for MOTUC ALREADY own a She-Ra? Also to be fair, most people checking the Matty Booth would be on a frenzy for the SDCC exclusives... instead of buying Last Month's figure...

I call Cost-cutting BS on the Head answer!
FINALLY!! GLIMMER IS IN MY SHELF!! Now I need a Crita!! Crita is to Mara what Evil Lyn is to Teela. If we ARE getting Mara, then we NEED Crita.

I agree. Cost cutting is Mattel's favorite thing to do with a line that becomes a hit. They did it with DCUC, and the reaction was so loudly negative that they were forced to use better vendors. They did it with JLU too and just barely improved QC where they had obviously cut corners.

That's great. Wonderful, Mattel. They clearly look at us like moronic addicts and figure we will buy whatever they make. That may be true to a certain extent, but it will shorten the longevity of the line. Their QC is already an embarassment (though, I wouldn't be surprised if their competitors admired them for being able to sell flawed products).

As for She-Ra at SDCC... Comic Con is not the place to primarily sell toys that have already been released. It's primarily a comic book show. The percentage of People attending the con, and purchasing toys likely to already have at least one of every previously released toy Mattel had for sale.

Plus, people are probably going to wait for the re-done She-Ra. You know, one whose outfit is made of softer material so it doesn't end up tearing if you put her on a horse or in an action pose.

Okay, just got the clarification on the Cosmic Key question from my site...

The whole Cosmic Key is one accessory. It does not come apart. Hope that clarifies.

    Suggestion for Mattel:

make the Cosmic Key two pieces. We deserve it for committing to the subscription.

I agree! That statement is kinda scary since the vast majority of collectors can't afford to go to SDCC and pick up a She-Ra in person. It's much easier to buy one at Mattycollector.com if enough are put on sale

This mentality of SDCC con goers representing all MOTUC collectors just has to stop!

If the sub figure is coming out in Feb/March like last year it's probably too late for that. But it might be a neat thing to work in for Gwildor's release.

Ask Matty Q&A around the web august the 15th!

I start the thread for the Q&A around the web with Matty of August the 15th!

    From www.maitresdelunivers.org

A possible reason SDCC She-Ra didn't sell out is cos those fans a) already have her, and b) are waiting for female buck 2.0 version She-Ra that may actually be able to ride Swiftwind.
Grayskull needs its Cardboard Spacesuit MOTUCized

Those are the hardcore fans. Of course they already have She-Ra. Basing sales off of die-hard fans who already have the figures is baffling.

Not sure why you're laughing, but my eyes are rolling because I have to ask: "Why the hell WOULDN"T they make the Horsemen's Battle Ram?" And, the Horsemen have stated that it was a pitch so that they can demonstrate their ability to make good vehicles. Ask the fans, "Matty," how good of a job the Horsemen did.
