You having a bad day, Shokoti? You usually roll with my punches better than this.

Besides, New ThunderCats vs Old ThunderCats is another variation of vintage vs 200X, or old versus new. Same argument.

Similar argument since minor points are different, which was partially my point. Citing examples is fine and great but I am reminding this is primarily a Thundercats thread.

Nostalgia inspires preference just as much as being against nostalgia inspires it but in a different direction. But then so do aesthetics, economics, and many other things. Re-using parts makes since financially, some people prefer simplicity in design even on the macro level.

nostalgia just means you look back on something fondly, often despite flaws that are more apparent when looked back upon. Nostalgia doesn't mean you have to adhere to it, just that you liked it.

Seriously? Executives actually believe there's never been a brand-new franchise that succeeded and this one movie is going to prove them wrong?

Have they never heard of Harry Potter, Pokemon, Ben 10 or Yu-Gi-Oh?

    Quite.

Personally I'm approaching this new Thundercats with a grain of skepticism. Most of the revivals I've seen haven't been all that good, regardless of their commercial success (which isn't always a sign of quality).

One thing I will do is stick with it for awhile and give it a chance. When MYP He-Man first premiered, I walked away after just the pilot movie, but now on the DVDs I've seen that the show seriously improves after the first half-dozen episodes, and that's pretty much what I expect of a new Thundercats.

Commercial success can be related more to faerie farts then quality.

I have a feeling most of these are brought back more because of nostalgia from those making the decisions than anything else. Sure they can ride the wave of nostalgia for casual and hardcore fans.

The other side is they are just more honest about where they borrowed from. Basically if you follow every show or idea twenty years before it was released there was something that obviously influenced it, but going back 20 years before that you find what influenced that.

Harry Potter adds to my point about movies only being adaptations, remakes or sequels. (Wasn't really referring to books when I made my point but how many publishers turned down Harry Potter before it eventually saw print? Almost all of them)

Yu-Gi-Oh really built on what Pokemon started, and that began as a video game which then spread into other merchandising and the cartoon. Also consider that Pokemon is now 14 years old when 'new' things were slightly more common.

Ben 10 I will agree is one of the few original cartoons of recent times that has been very successful.

The only other original movie (other than Inception) that has been successful lately is Avatar, but no one really went to see that based on how awesome the story was, but rather how pretty it looked in 3D.

Those are still all new franchises, however. Ones that took off--in their original forms--without the benefit of a built-in audience, save for pre-existing fans of their respective genres.

Speaking of Avatar I'd like to add Avatar: The Last Airbender to that list.

i totally get what you are saying Mr. Shokoti.
and people misuse the word nostalgia. it's a ***** way to discredit a persons opinion. "oh it's just your nostalgia, you can't actually prefer short furry cloths" or whatever the subject.

I flipped out more than I normally do but I just get sick of the little digs at people's opinions with the word "nostalgia". Sure, there are things I still like to this day in large part due to nostalgia. There are also things I loved as a kid that I no longer like. It's basically a passive agressive way(although sometimes it's not that "passive") of saying you have bad taste or are unable to separate your opinons from deep-seated emotions you felt as a child. In all honesty, I don't believe why a person likes something should mean anything to anyone other than that individual.

Some people's opinions ARE their deep-seated emotions that they felt as a child. You can't talk to them, because their thinking is so absolute, that they are inflexible or incapable of accepting new ideas.

Some people are like this, some people aren't.

I'll reserve my opinion on the designs until an actual Toon preview is shown.
About the stuff revealed I despise that Snarf is a pet instead of Lion-O's Nanny/caretaker. (Does this mean they're getting rid of Lion-O's Child Trapped in an Adult body thing?)

Pretty much the same can be said of some other people who, instead of something from childhood, got really attached to something during their early adult life. For example, a certain cartoon and toyline reboot from about 8 years ago.

Not the same thing. My love for 200X isn't rooted in nostalgia at all, but it is rooted in an improvement to most of the original designs. If there were better designs than 200X, then I'd be all over those.

I'm open to new stuff, especially if it's just as good or improves upon the original stuff.

If the new ThunderCats looks improve upon the originals, then I'd prefer those designs.

Not that I'm talking about anyone here, I think the vast majority of people are like that on the other two message boards I frequent.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm just saying it's much more of a financial risk to invest in something completely new rather than basing it on something that's already embedded in people's minds. Execs seem much more afraid of taking risks these days.

Exactly. What some people see as "blinded by nostalgia", I see as "Sorry but it was waaay better then than it is now."

Some people just can't accept that as fact and they want to see properties RUINED FOREVER™ 10 times over. I like to refer to them as "bandwagon Transformers fans". Because only a "bandwagon Transformers fan" would wish such a thing upon their favorite 80s property.

Another reason why I still prefer Gobots to Transformers to this day. I used to love Transformers almost as much as every other 80s property I grew up with. Nowadays not so much. It's been RUINED FOREVER™ waaaay too many times for my liking in recent years.

you know you made me think of an interesting notion. I think people who outright dismiss the original incarnation of a property (in many cases) in favour of the reimagined version, do so because they focus ONLY on the flaws in the original. I've been watching a few filmation MOTU episodes and am amazed by how much maturity is woven into it (underneath the kid friendly stuff) I think fundamentally it's more mature than 200X. now the fact is villains weren't extremely threatening and fight scenes generally werent much in the way of fights, but the themse in the show, those had very mature outlooks IMO. the MYP series had more stakes in terms of the fighting and the physical threats, but it lacked in the depth of say Masks of Power, or House of Shokoti or the dragon's gift. too many people focus only on what makes the show cheesy vs what makes the new one cool (usually violence and portrayal of villains apptitude) and lose sight of the artistry involved in the original. if you were to retell the filmation stories in a MOTUC way (meaning same stories and themes but with todays animation techniques and freedom) you'd have IMO the perfect cartoon.,

I was scared to even post that Thundercats video above since it would just bring back my earlier posts where I got a tad angry.

While I always liked the Gobots toys more than the Transformers as a kid, one of the reasons why I'm excited for the Gobots DVDs, even though I never even saw the show before, is that I don't have to worry about it being full of death, crude jokes, or "upgrades" to make it cooler & edgier. Just enjoyable entertainment about transforming robots the way God intended.

I have to say that I am looking forward to this because from what little I have seen this looks really interesting to me. While I do not have much nostalgia for the original show because we didn't get it where we lived I saw a few of the shows when it reaired later on and I did see the Thundercats Exodus movie via a videotape copy and enjoyed both.

Speaking of a certain reboot that came almost 10 years ago I enjoyed it immensely because I thought it was really well written and really let the characters develop much more so than the original which I truly have nostalgia for.
