    Answers to WTFWTK 2.122!

Mattel has once again provided answers to your questions.
Thanks again to them for taking the time to answer these!
Check out their answers to your Round 122 questions!

This round of questions were selected by TheShadow.
Thanks to that fan for their help!

    1. Niki: Do you consider Jetlag characters as main New Adventures characters as well or do you only consider NA toy line characters as main NA characters?

We would love to get to some Jetlag characters. With so many vintage characters left to do before 2015 ends, time will tell whether we get to Jetlag sooner than later. But it is not off the table!

    2. T-man: Which MYP/200x characters are considered A-List? Characters like Evilseed, Prahvus, Horde Wraith, King Hsss, Snake Armor He-man, Sorceress, Ceratus? Would a B-List for Mattel be Tuvar, Baddhra, Odephius? I am trying to gauge what is considered A-List, B-List, etc.

We have released Battle Lion (or at least are about to) in May 2014, so that is a good benchmark for 200X. How many more 200X characters will be released in the next two years remains to be seen. But we don't have a specific statement on whom is considered A list and whom is not. You will need to use Battle lion as a benchmark.

    3. King Tamusk: Hypothetically, it's been mentioned that a 2016 subscription could include 2.0 versions of characters. However, wouldn't 2.0 figures be best if sold as a non-sub item and leave the subscriptions to new characters (aside from variant quarterly slots)? Not every subscriber will want a 2.0 figure taking up a valuable and limited spot that a new character could have had. As a non-sub item, people can decide if they prefer the 2.0 version over the one previously offered and buy it if they want to, without feeling forced into purchasing it as part of the subscription. What are your thoughts on this?

To answer this question we need to take a step back. First, 2016 is way too far off to comment on right now. We need to get through 2015 first, and even if 2015 happens it does not guarantee 2016 will happen. As prices continue to rise and costs skyrocket we are doing all we can to complete the vintage line before 2015 ends. How, if and what 2016 might potentially include is so far off at this point that we truly can't make any comments other than to note all suggestions are being considered when and if a 2016 line happens. Let’s get through 2015 sell in first!

    4. Snake Hunter: Is there a chance that the 2016 subscription slots can be decided by an official poll that only 2015 subscription customers can access? This way customers will get the characters they really want to buy.

While we will look at fan requests and online polls (should a 2016 line happen, we need to get through 2015 first) we will not be able to allow any one group to choose the entire year's roll out. We may do a fan choice slot (hypothetically) but there are too many variables such as tooling and production costs to allow an outside group to choose a full year's line up. Cool idea though!

    5. Barezz: Since we know Mara will be coming in 2015, I was wondering if you have decided if she will be designed after the unmade vintage toy prototype, or the outfit that she wore in the latter part of the Jetlag cartoon? Or maybe a combination of both?

She is too far off at this point to comment on any specifics. But she will be in 2015 should we successfully sell in a 2015 line this summer.

It sounds to me that they are really considering a scale-back if/when a 2016 line happens.

Wrapping up 2015 may be their goal with this line and may come back in 2016 with a smaller scaled line to offset the rising costs.

Honestly, I thought this was going to happen anyways (but not exactly like this).

I always thought that MOTUC would run until all of the vintage figures were released and then when a movie came out, a smaller scale starting with movie versions would hit retail and then move on to other versions (aka vintage style).

Since a movie isn't happening anytime soon I think they're in a tough spot because a smaller line really wouldn't jump out at retail without any other media attached to it.

Unfortunately, I don't find Battle Lion to be a good gauge for A-list 200x at all. He certainly wasn't on my radar for this two year wrap-up.
formerly wayneepoo, now with better name!

    Most Wanted (Remaining)
    Vintage MOTU: Blast Attack, Dragstor
    POP:Angella, Peekablue, Perfuma
    NA:Tuskador, Quakke, Sagitar
    Filmation: Dylamug, Vultak
But in reality I want them ALL!!

I agree, if you use Battle Lion as a gage than you could include a lot of other characters.
On the other hand since Battle Lion is close to King Grayskull, maybe this is some kind of indication that Veena is coming.
My top 5 wants for MOTUC: Crita, MYP Evilseed, Queen Angela, Lodar & Hunga the Harpy

I agree if BL is the gauge for MYP then all characters are fair game! Bad choice of words for that answer.

I would think Ceratus would be really easy to do: Whiplash body but with new head, shoulders, loincloth, and bracelets. He could even have Whiplash's weapon in new colors.

Evil Seed is a important MYP character, he's gotta be in there. I like the idea someone had of combining a MYP AND Filmation version as the same figure. Just have two different heads and a cloak for the FIlmation version.

That's why i felt it was about time to question orgers on how they see future of this brand by opening some new topic.
But i do insist on the fact that this line,at this stage, really needs to sound a bit more "Wow" whichs mean a lot more of external motu categories
(Beasts, Vehicles, Small Playsets/Dios) then we'll get there.

I think what a lot of people are forgetting about Battle Cat is that he already has a companion figure out- King GS.

So while it may not have been on our radars for potential MYP figs at least it gives us a glimpse into Mattel's mind- that they want to build upon what is already been established.

2016 is way too far off guys!

Also, it takes 12-24 months to bring a toy from concept, according to various quotes from ToyGuru.

    Just saying.

While reading Scott's responses I similarly struggled with the idea of how to classify Battle Lion. He appeared in the show a handful of times in flashbacks only, so wasn't a 'key character', but he did use an already established buck- as did Beast man's mount. So I guess what he's saying is, does the character use a minimal amount of new tooling? Given that context I doubt someone of Prahvus' size (unless he's done in the same scale as everyone else, which would be a crime) would be considered, and there goes Evil Seed as well, who would be an entirely new mold.

I think what Scott should have said is, "does the 200x character require zero new tooling and perhaps just a new coat of paint? Then we'll consider him/her." I'm of course being somewhat facetious, but only a little. Heck, look no further than the SDCC exclusive this year to judge how much mojo Mattel is really putting behind anything 'innovative' these days. That about says it all.

Also, could Scott have said "if we sell in 2015" more times? The fear and gut-wrenching doubt sets in early this year. Or is it really early? I lose track, since between the last few years worth of summer sell in and now the add-on subs, the fear is pretty much constant.

The problem is that many 200X-specific characters (those original to the series, or those that appeared in the Filmation cartoon like Marzo and Evil Seed, but became drastically different characters in both character and appearance on the 200X show) often only had at most a handful of appearances, with others being one-offs.

Some of them resonated with fans, and were desired as figures in the 200X line, and are also requests in the MOTUC line. But it's a catch-22. Arguments can be made that none of these characters are all that important, while arguments can be made that they are. Marzo and the Faceless One are both characters that got a lot of requests and are already in the line. Some people would argue them as important, others would likely say that don't really care for them one way or the other. They each only really had a handful of appearances in the series.

Battle Lion is also a good example. To the best of my recollection, he and King Grayskull only ever appeared in one episode, "The Power of Grayskull." So they are "one-offs." But it was a very significant and memorable episode in the series. King Grayskull was the very first figure that came out in this line. I can understand fans wanting his 'steed.' Not to mention that the armor can be put on Battle Cat to make a 200X Battle Cat, so there's additional appeal there, too. But I can also fully understand some people not wanting him.

Heck, look at Calix, who has been doing well in the he-man.org 2016 polls. He was in that same episode, but only very briefly. He was basically just a random Horde character made up for that episode as an excuse for Hordak to have someone to kill without offing one of the original Horde characters. But given his presence in this memorable episode that gave the origins of He-Man's powers and was the only major time that the Horde appeared, he has become a big deal to some people.

But the same could be said for many Filmation characters. While there were a few regular characters on the shows that have had or will have a figure released in MOTUC (Marlena, Shadow Weaver, Scorpia, Imp, Maddam Razz & Broom), most of the other Filmation specific figures that we've gotten only had one or two appearances. Sure, some were contraversial and not highly demanded amongst the fan base (Nepthu), but others have been (Shokoti). But even for the ones that come up more often than others, there will always be some people who don't care for them. But they often get requests based on being in very memorable episodes. It's just the way it is.

While it doesn't make for a perfect barometer as to what figures are more likely than others, we can still get a fairly decent idea.

Well if Battle Lion is a benchmark for 200X characters then basically none of the remaining 200X are A-List. The 200X lot could literally be represented by anything out of 200X.

The same could be said for many other remaining figures. I certainly wouldn't call Rotar and Twistoid "A-list" by any means. Heck, most of the remaining vintage figures that have yet to be made or announced are hardly "A-list."

I hadn't thought of it that way, but now that I think about it, it is hilariously ironic, isn't it?

I think what you're actually referring to is "arbitrary rules", which is a slightly different insult, Kevenn. One is just simply an assumption that something may happen and the other is an insult representing hard and fast rules that apparently we fans make up in our whittle heads and are immovable about once these have been set in place.

JETLAG characters are not of the table and they are planned for later…what later?

And Mara is not discussed yet but it takes more than a year to make it from prototype to packaged figure, it seems she will be the last figure for 2015(if it happens) than….

Dodging the issue, the question was about SUBSCRIPTION CUSTOMERS choosing slots, not fanbase that can buy or not subscriptions.

Either way, the point was valid; How in the world would you get any kind of concensus from several thousand people in any meaningful way? For example, what about subscribers that didn't want figure X over those that did? What if that figure was voted out, with another chosen that the anti-X group didn't want? There is no way a specific list could ever be agreed upon.

Surely at this point we know that A-List 200X characters means "Evilseed"

As much as I have been enjoying speculating about 2016 and enjoy the recent polls I guess the harsh reality is that 2015 is going to be a tough sell and we shouldn't be getting ahead of ourselves here.

I remember a Q&A a while back and it was said by TG that Mara would be in the later part of 2015 so that must still be the case then.
