need tutorial for designing the classic logo style

Hi there,

does anybody here know how to re-build the style of the classic logo? Obviously someone has to know as the forum's logo has been built in some way
I am thinking of something like a tutorial for photoshop where each step of building it is described. There are many typography effect tutorials on the internet but none re-creating that MOTU effect...

Maybe I just haven't found one yet and someone can direct me to it or maybe someone here could tell me (with his/her profound photoshop knowledge) how to get my text into the great looks of this. The whole thing, you know. The metallic look, the 3D effect etc.pp.

Well, the original vintage one was actually painted (mostly with an airbrush), it was a long time before the digital era.
The one being used right now by Mattel and Classic Media is the one I painted in Photoshop.
But the way I did it didn't really use many special Photoshop trick.
To emulate the look of the original, I just emulated the same painting process in the digital environment.
So no 3D or any effect.
I draw it line by line, then used the airbrush and lot of masking. The only "trick" I used was the noise filter, to add grain to the airbrushed parts, to not make them look too digital.
But that's about it

Thanks for the fast reply. I dare to say from myself that I think I would manage the "blue-white" and the "dark red - brighter red" color scheme but I had thought that some of the effects could be recreated by sth like photoshop's layer effects like "Bevel/Emboss", "Shading" etc.
Maybe I will just start tyring it and do it like you've done - actually (digitally) painting. Though I'm a bit sceptical of the outcome

Using various Photoshop's effects, you might get somehow close, but it will still like "done in photoshop"
To begin with, you can't really control the perspective withe PS effetcs. You'd need a 3D program to do that, and then maybe paint between the lines.

It really depends on how close you want to get to the original.
Its' possible, not easy though, it require lots of patience and time.
One of the things that made it looking almost identical to the original for me, was to also emulate the little errors. But that is something extra

I think I will start designing the typo in illustrator. Illustrator has some kind of "emulative" 3D function so I can use taht for having the basic perspective. After that i will go to photoshop and colourize it by hand.
Your hint with the noise effect sounds pretty good. I will use that, too.

Before starting however I have to get the fonts. Could you tell me which fonts were used for "MASTERS" and which one for "of the universe"?

There are no fonts, it's all done by hand

My intention is to build the logo with a friend's name in it (instead of "Masters") so a font would have been helpful. Anyway - I will try my best and in days or weeks (or years, haha) I will present my result...

Yep & yep! My Advertising Illustration teacher from college is the man who did it. And indeed, it was the era of the airbrush.

Dude, this looks like I envision it (just with another text). Do you have any tips besides the ones Emiliano already gave?

I scanned an old "Los Amos" box and "traced" the lines on Corel Draw X4, then I coloured-painted on Photoshop

Tracing it on a vector software (corel draw, illustrator) first, makes it really easy to fix the perspective of the logo, I know Photoshop does something like that too, and the gradients and effects are made completely using the painbrush tool on PS too

Well, the tracing won't be the problem. I'm quite profiscient in illustrator. however, I'm stuck in actually building the letters first. I just don't know how a "B", "G", "O" etc. would look like...

kind of reviving this thread of mine. While Carlos and Emiliano really helped me out in a grat way back when I started this thread, I know am profiscient in re-designing the logo by myslef since some months.

Just a few days ago however I approached not the classic toyline logo but the one from the '87 Motu movie and I wanted to show you the result:
