Well it's official they are (predictably) getting Hans Zimmer to make the score.

At least he voices respect for the Williams theme. He doesn't say it, but maybe he'll sample it or update it with some "newer" sounds to make people who think it's dated accept it more. I still fear more of the same droning wallpaper that's popular with moviemakers now for some reason.

Cher sang a song on that soundtrack. That's why I bought it! That's all I can contribute to a discussion about Hanz Zimmer.

I wish it was Michael Giacchino. I could totally hear his music fitting Superman.

I really hope we don't hear the John Williams music again. That music belongs to a different era of Superman. It'd be like hearing the Danny Elfman music from the Tim Burton Batman films showing up in the Chris Nolan Batman films. It would feel out of place.
It's great being Lord of the Thundercats - especially hanging out with Cheetara - but the one draw back is that He-Man can still beat me up.

Very blurry catch of Man of Steel teaser from SDCC 2012

There are big explosions and a glimpse of Russell Crowe; then I cannot identify anything

    Update

Never mind, it seems that was available for 40 min only

    Update II

However, here's the new teaser poster

I really hope we hear it updated like the Bond theme in Casino Royale. I don't agree it's spirit is dated, and it's not quite the same as the Elfman score. Also I know the Batmobile chase through Gotham from Batman Begins was x1000 better with Elfman's score than Zimmer's as seen on youtube. It clicked with that music in all the ways it should have in the theater--but didn't.

    OK, here's something

I can barely see Cavill shirtless with flames across his chest, many farm images, Spawn like red cape, a glimpse of Supes kissing Lois (I think), some army pointing big S and then him being thrown away some building.
I like the music though, not John Williams theme but quite good

I'm really excited about this movie.

Next to Godzilla and Iron Man 3, this is the one I was most excited for at SDCC. Can't wait to see the teaser with the Dark Knight Rises.

Uh, why do we have a poorly done cam rip? YOu can't see anything from that.

Seeing as how Zimmer is the best composer out there next to Danny Elfman, that is good news. It is too bad neither one of them did The Amazing Spider-Man, as it would have help the score A LOT.

I hope not. He might have respect for Williams, but if I wanted Williams' score, I would watch one of the old Superman movies. If I want to watch someone imitating Williams' score, I would suffer through Returns.
Can someone PM me the US number for Matty? I want to talk to someone who might has a clue of what is going on.

I hear Superman when I hear that score, then I hear Williams (if the separate is even possible). In contrast I don't hear Batman when I hear Zimmer's scores, but I do hear the general Bruckheimer-tainted mesh that I associate with Zimmer. How you feel about James Horner's ASM score, is how I am afraid I will feel for Zimmer's Man of Steel score and generally already do for his body of work. Frankly I think Zimmer and Horner have a lot in common in terms of strengths and weaknesses, although I'd give Horner the edge. Only thing I like about Zimmer now is that he gave a start to John Powell, whose scores I have vastly preferred.

I honestly don't hear Williams score when I see Superman. I mean, it is a good score, but I honestly did not find the Reeves Superman movies all that impressive to begin with, even as a kid. I still don't find them all that good since Superman is pretty much a god in them. There is nothing he cannot do, and it makes for some pretty boring movies. There is just no suspense when knowing that if someone he cares about dies, he can just rewind time to bring them back. Even in Returns he was a god. I mean, he can freaking lift an entire island made of kryptonite into outer space and it isn't until he is impaled by a piece that he even feels it when he should have felt it long before he even got there.

Now Batman, I will agree, I usually do think of Elfman's Batman theme, but that is moreso due to its use in BTAS than the movie. I still think the theme to Begins and DK is incredible though and fit the mood of Nolan's movies more than Elfman's would have.

At least that era of films has distinctive, recognizable theme music. For Nolan's Batman films, I swear I have ZERO recollection of any of the music from either of the two films I've seen, even if there is a common theme for Batman somewhere in those films, whatever it was isn't memorable to me.

Well, whatever the new Superman theme will be, I hope it sounds 'super' and not unmemorable like Nolan's Batman soundtrack.

I agree with you there....everytime I see a Nolan Batman trailer I hear the Elfman score in my head anyway. We had it in those movies, the animated series opener, it plays at six flags.......it's pretty Iconic. I can't say the same for the new score. Same thing with Superman.....hum it and most people recognize it right away. Then again that can be said about most of Williams theme songs.

Its an utter shame that movies of now can't have anything even close to iconic when it comes to music. Either it is unmemorable, generic garbage or a soundtrack full of rap music. One reason why a lot of this era's movies suck!

    - - - Updated - - -

I finally got a chance to watch the teaser trailer. I don't know about the music. Sounds a lot like the same kind of crap I didn't care for from the show 'Heroes'. The music doesn't have any life, nothing of substance that would help someone identify it as a musical score tied to Superman.

The music, to me, sounds more like if it were tied to a superwuss, and the emo subculture that seems to permeate TV and movie productions of this era we live in.

The flight sequence was very impressive, however. We still have another year to go before the movie comes out in it's final form, so by then the music might improve.

Here are the trailers, though they are the same footage. Only difference is Jonathan Kent narrates one and Jor-El the other. The music is from Lord of the Rings, right after Gandalf falls in Fellowship.

I know it is just a teaser but honestly it does not hype anything.
It almost had the same vibe as "Superman Returns", quite melancholic and certanly sad, like an indie movie about fishermen solitude.

I must admit though, that is very similar to Batman Begins teaser trailer, so I do hope that it turns up as good or even better than that one

    Here it is for comparison

Well, the crap music didn't help things either. I'm certainly hoping we don't get another emo Superman this time around. Anytime a writing team feels that viewers need to connect with Superman more on a 'human' level, they give us nothing but an even more insecure, emo guy who is supposedly the greatest super hero to ever be.

Having a character needing to deal with some realistic issues is fine, but having the issues being at the forefront of the story just cripples the character.

The cinematography is nice. Not sure about the feel. They definitely went "Dark Knight" for it, which I think might be a mistake after Superman Returns. I think people want a more exciting Superman movie than that. Which I think MOS is supposed to be. Plenty of time to advertise it as that though. Maybe they figured they'd go for a similar vibe in front of TDKR.
