I haven't seen them in years, but I remember the later episodes being hokey in the extreme - the D.E.F. episodes probably the most so. But there were definitely a few new characters who had potential - I loved Metal-Head; Cesspool and Overkill both had possibilities, but came off - well, cartoony.

I did like how Pathfinder & Ambush filled in the 'buddy duo' role of characters like Alpine & Bazooka or Leatherneck & Wet-Suit.

Seeing characters like Psyche-Out and Shockwave finally make appearances also made me a little sad for the rest of the '87-88 crowd, that mostly missed out on the animation window.
Yeah but like you said in the extreme was the bad part, I mean in the original series it was 80's camp (it fit the times)

It is said though because Cesspool is a cool character and came off much better in the Marvel Comics then the DIC Series but he was pretty cool even in that (compared to the other Cobra villains). I was sad Metal Head was really not used much after, I thought he was a solid addition to Cobra and provided the dumb but dangerous role that was often relegated to Zartan's crew.

Its funny you mention the DEF, they had the lamest premise but it was probably the best set of episodes in the 2nd season because of the amount of characters you had involved

The show and the toyline did kind of go hand in hand down that road - very little in G.I.Joe has ever been as silly as the majority of the sub-groups, going all the way back to Cobra-La. Personally, I always kind of dug Battleforce, but that was because they appealed to my ten-year old mindset as just being 'cool' (Actually, Dodger is still one of my favorites) - but the others, as they got less and less military-minded, just became bizarre.

Some of the concepts might have worked in different executions...a sub-unit of the Joes trained for space missions, or dealing with Cobra's genetic mutation experiments, or pollution plants - but they came across so garish and over-the-top that it's almost not even G.I.Joe at a certain point. (Robo-Joe and Bio/Monstro-Viper are probably the best examples.)

At any rate, it certainly didn't translate to the 'toon. In the comics, Cobra Commander took out Headman's drug-running because it was compromising Broca Beach, IIRC. Not out of any bizarre alliance with Falcon and a random Crimson Guard!

(And in regards to the Eco-Warriors, it bugged me as a kid to no end that Airtight didn't get a new update there. They stuck him briefly in the comics as a cameo - but really, what the heck do Flint and Barbecue have to do with the environment specialists??)

Gnawgahyde was my favorite Joe figure as a kid. I will buy this set if only because he is prominently featured in "Operation: Dragonfire".

I doubt we will see any extras, hopefully it sells because I have reservations the crappy 2nd season will even come out by parting it out like this

Shout's Brian Ward said this on the extras:

As for bonus features, the first and second volumes are being put together in tandem and, what started out as a single-disc "Operation Dragonfire" release has turned into a 4-disc S1 set. The deadlines are the same, however, so that means four times the work. Unfortunately, the window's a little tight for this first set to get bonus material. But I am working on getting stuff for the second, to wrap the collection in a nice "bow," so to speak.
on a possible complete series set:
There is no complete series set planned, at this time. It's possible that one day down the road, we'll combine the two into a slip case or something, the way we did with Transformers but that's pure speculation on my part. As of now, we plan on two releases.

Well at least that would give them a reason to finish the series!

The commercials were neat, I have them all in mp4 from the site I built a few years back that went under when the host got infected with a virus.

That will probably be the only redeeming thing on that set, since we have jems like this in the 2nd season

If you have stuff that might be of use to Shout!, I'd recommend contacting them. They usually give free sets out to those that help contribute to the bonus features.

You could also tweet Brian Ward at bward028 to let him know you got some stuff that he might be interested in.

I really hate what they did to CC in the cartoon. He got dumber and dumber as the show went on. Resolute is the only cartoon to depict him properly. In the comics, he was a maniac, a genius, and while he would run away, he was not the coward and buffoon the cartoons turned him into.

Cool they never replied to my offer so hopefully they were able to get stuff from Hasbro. I am looking forward to Season 2, mainly because there are some episodes near the end of the series on my VHS masters I moved to DVD some years ago which were not the best. So even though the episodes strink writing wise it will be nice to see them in digital transfer quality.

Mine should be arriving tomorrow, so I'll be spending time with it this weekend! My wife got me the 'foot locker' they put out for the original series, and I spent a lot of time showing her the series (I actually saw a few episodes I'd never seen before) - she really dug it, so I'm looking forward to showing her the later stuff. (Thinking positive, here!)

Despite the drop in animation quality, S1 has some very solid stories. Its S2 where the animation quality drops even lower and the stories just go off the tracks

The show has never gotten a fair shake because the S2 episodes Hasbro released on VHS a long time ago outnumber the S1 episodes by a great margin (and then the ones they did choose from S1 were not the best examples). People's only frame of reference is horrible stories like Chunnel, El Dorado, and the Eco Warriors.

I think there would be more acceptance of the DIC series if people in the mass population had been exposed to things like the Operation Dragonfire mini-series, and the Sky Patrol.

I mean don't get me wrong the DIC series is more comedic in nature than the Sunbow series, that is just the nature of a DIC show. But I cry foul when RAH/Sunbow fans do not want to admit that that series has its fair share of whacked out episodes (Cobra Claws Are Coming to Town, The Gods Below, etc)

But the DIC show has an interesting premise, that being COBRA is flat broke and needing to re-establish itself so that the crazy ass schemes actually have a reason to be crazy lol
