Awesome job! Can't wait to see the final figure.
Thanks everyone!
This is a slow process for such a simple looking design. I'm pretty much torturing myself with correcting and avoiding microscopic flaws at this point.
I showed my daughter what I've got so far and she says "Cool, daddy. Are you going to paint his face to match the body now?"
Thanks, kid. Someone's going to be awfully surprised in a few years when she learns that I took her college fund and bought a thousand Weapons Paks.

I'm getting there!
I'd been running into problems painting. Some colors were very difficult to work with, but I think I've solved that. I may have to invest in an airbrush next time.
I was very lazy trying to match the second boot's fur to the first. It gets tedious since I don't really know how to do fur, so I did a sloppy job just to get it out of the way. I decided that he really needed an extra accessory, which was really just a way to put off fixing that boot, so now I'm finishing the extra piece and I've carved off the sloppy boot trim to start over.
I've got 2 small creative dilemmas that I'm still working out, the sword color and texturing the sock portion of the feet so they don't look like the vintage toy's smooth rubber rain boots. Pics within the week, hopefully

I am again in awe of your prowess. Can't wait to see the finished Blackstar. I love your monsters from Pyramid of Darkness and Arise, Serpentor, Arise. That red one is dead-on to the COBRA Commander-ruined Serpentor that Sgt. Slaughter took down. Thank you for sharing your gift.
That's some impressive knowledge of Joe monsters! I'm glad you recognize them enough to appreciate how ridiculous they are.
Here's a shot of the current custom coming together. I got really picky about minor rough spots on the necklace and belt once they were painted, so you can see that I went back and smoothed them some more.

....... yeah more, please complete him![]()
What an awesome custom, it rocks!! I need to see it finished man come on![]()

SLUSH HEAD FINALLY SHOWED UP IN MOTUC YAY!!!
Are you kidding? The only thing ridiculous about those monsters is how great they are. They are a G.I.Joe cartoon enthusiasts dream come true. If you have any more pics or even work in progress pics I'm sure we would all love to see them.
In regards to the task at hand I don't know if any one could do it better. John Blackstar looks amazing.

Yeah, those monsters were pretty great in the cartoon! They were just too crazy not to love. Assuming you've lived in your area for quite a while, perhaps you're like me and first experienced them while watching WTFX Fox 29? Maybe not, I forget.
Because my Joe customs were my first since my awful awkward experiments as a kid using a knife and enamel paints that never dried, it never even occurred to me to take progress pics. I decided to post this one as a WIP so it would urge me to finish it. Rather than load this thread with non-MOTU stuff, I'll post some links to threads for some of my older customs. No WIP shots, but I describe how they were made there.

That last one is ridiculously obscure. Bonus nerd points if you know it.
Those were all fun learning experiences. They seem more complex than Blackstar, but I'm finding him equally challenging. A bunch of weird creatures with non-tradtional shapes gave me a huge safety net where I didn't have to adhere to an existing style or produce extremely clean results.
I'm so impressed with how many customs I see on here that look like an actual 4H sculpted, factory painted production piece!

I want to see a pic of him fighting He-Man after you're done! That would be one EPIC battle!!!!!!
I've lived in Center City Philly since 1978, yes, saw G.I.Joe, Transformers, the Real Ghostbusters after school on Fox 29 back in the 80's. Remember the big contest they had when Transformers the Movie came out in '86? Watched Philly 57 and PHL 17 for Robotech, Voltron, Thundercats and Tedy Ruxbin. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think He-Man can on 29 in the mornings and afternoon but I may be wrong.
Thank you for the pics of your Joe customs. Magnificent and I love that you made a Bongo the Balloon Bear. One of my favorite stories as a kid because Rip Cord was an awesome figure and it was nice that he got some time in the spot light.
