the DIALS should STAY and are a very nice nod to the vintage line and help tie the vintage line in nicely with the classics. If you are complaining about a dial, then why not complain about all the extra articulation that takes away from the sculpt of the figure too? People get crazy about the abdominal crunch feature, but really how many people display their figures hunched over or completely bent over? The abdominal crunch takes away from more detailed chest armor we could have. In almost all cases the figures are standing up straight with a straight torso, so I really don't think a dial on the back of a figure really takes anything away... if anything it adds something special to the figure to make it unique.

Who's gonna pose their Hurricane Hordak looking the other way anyways? So they can stare at the damn dial? I don't think it's really that big a deal.

BLÅÇK FLØWËRŠ!!!!
Actually, She-Ra's vintage tiara looks nothing like the vintage figure's, Catra's whip is ridiculous, Bow's armor could have looked more like his vintage counterpart (and he could have used a headband), Orko's magic trick was missing, Randor should have come with his gold spear in the first place, and characters like Moss Man and Hordak are stuck with long loincloths.
But I'm just so damned happy to get figures that I've waited 24 years for that I don't mind the little things.
Aaron’s Top 10 (In Order):
Starburst She-Ra, Hunga the Harpy, The Twiggets, Stridor, Catra’s Cat Form, Kay-La, Skeleteen, Mini Comics Garn, Spinwit, FILMation King Miro
The Classics line itself has already a lot of ties to the vintage line. Almost all the Vintage MOTU based MOTUC are pretty much Vintage MOTU figures with modern sculpting and articulation. Buzz-Off, Webstor and a few others have gotten some non-vintage additions, but aside those guys MOTUC is pretty much Vintage 2.0, visually speaking.
On Articulation: From the beginning we were told that MOTUC was getting MODERN Articulation, which is a godsend IMO. The Ab Crunch is not taking away the details on the armors, Mattel is. (Logistics, Anime Hyper detail, development slots, or whatever the excuse of the day is) Yes there's plenty of people who pose their figures standing up straight in some vanilla poses. There are others who goof around with their figures and do cool battle scenes. (The second group benefits from the added articulation for dynamic poses.) Some figures are Meant to be posed hunched over (Beastman comes to mind) Others can bend a bit back to look "Taller" (Holding the sword aloft pose comes to mind)
The articulation allows to hide the parts reuse a bit better than say, the vintage line where everyone is pretty much in the same pose.
The Hurricane Hordak dial takes a lot away from the figure. It pretty much becomes the focal point of his back or when posed from the side. Kinda like having a huge zit on the nose's tip. The Dial will be pretty much a hindrance If/When vehicles arrive (the same way She-Ra's Skirt is a hindrance to ride Swifty) Will we have to "double dip" for HH 2.0? Had the 4H added some details to the armor to improve on the concept that Hordak has cybernetic powers, or made the Dial blend in better, maybe the displeasure from a moderately large percentage of the customers (based on the polls here and on Matty) would've been less. Well Optikk and Syklone have dials (and their desings on the back are pretty busy and detailed so the dials blend better). HH is not getting "originality points" there. So far the idea of Vac Metal is the only place where HH is Unique (until we get to Entrapta or Battle Sounds Skeletor).
FINALLY!! GLIMMER IS IN MY SHELF!! Crita is coming... Now I NEED SONGSTER! The Awesometastic Bard!
The dial on Sy-Klone is just silly, unfortunately. It reminds us that they didn't spend the money to include the spinning feature.
The dial on HH's back could have been cool... they could have sharpened the edges, and made it look like a red, sharp, scary spine or something.
Optikk's dial actually looks kind of cool... his armor is so detailed and busy, and he's a mutant, so that spikey thing on his lower back just looks like it fits in with the rest of the detailing.
I like when they incorporate little things, and turn them into something else. She-Ra's comb, for example, was a cool homage, and making it into an axe with spikes on the edge was brilliant.
I would prefer the 4H use artistic interpretation to include homages, rather than simply sculpt the red dial, reminding us AGAIN that the action feature is missing on this figure.
Tung Lashor should not have the dial... unless they create a similarly colored spine of skin on his back... that would be a cool way of creating an homage to the dial on the vintage figure, without ruining the sculpt.
Catra's whip was not so well realized... I've suggested this before, but I feel they should have made it so the whip extended from the handle of the comb, and the comb spikes could have been used as a tossable weapon, or a grappling (as a fellow friend here added).
The lack of creativity when it comes to including these homages baffles me. The 4H are incredibly talented, and it's a surprise that they haven't had more fun turning these old dials, levers, etc. into fun updates.

Great post bcrduke. The dials are turning me off from the line. Too bad I have a sub. A mistake I will not be making again.

Arrogant and spiteful responses like that is what makes me think that Toyguru is the one pushing for all these hairbrain decisions that we have seen in the line recently. He seems to take negative comments about such creative choices very personally more so than complaints about stuff like reversed shoulders. So for those who are out on them, for the time being, you'll just need to learn to customized cause I don't think they are going anywhere for now.
The dials up to this point have been easy to ignore, but Hurricane Hordak's really sticks out.
It was cute with the first few figures when you couldn't see it, but I wish they would stop with useless dials/levers.
I think the dial on Hordak looks cool. It´s like a backbone cover![]()

I dont see why the dial is that big of a deal. I think folks really need to settle down and realize that these are action figures that we collect for fun. I could have definitely done without the dial (given that the action feature is missing), but I am totally neutral to it. I'm sure it was meant as a fun nod to the original figure and nothing more. The answer given by Toyguru probably was not the best, but it is hard to blame him for defensive answers to our questions when the collector community nit-picks every little detail of every single figure and every single statement that he makes regarding the line. Although there have been flaws in certain aspects of the line (example - the website) we are still getting the BEST line of figures EVER. Who would have thought we would be getting Sy-Klone in April 2011 when this line first was launched??? The 4 Horsemen continue to knock it out of the park with their wonderful designs and sculpts if you ask me!!!!
From Mattycollector's poll:
No, the dial is dumb without the action feature. - 57 (62%)
Yes, the dial harkens back to the vintage look of the figure. - 30 (33%)
I don't have a preference either way. - 5 (5%)
*He-Man.org's poll isn't valid because it started a long way before we saw Hurricane Hordak. Those first two dials was literally nods.. a small little details. They aren't that anymore.
I must say I'm a little scared by what comes to Tung Lashor, please 4H live that DIAL OUT!
MOTUC needs:Tung Lashor, Rio-Blast and rest of the Hordes!
WANTED: Minicomics !!!Swords NEEDED !!!
MY FEEDBACK
There's no dial on Clawful's claw.
The decisions on this line just keep getting more comical. It's hilarious that a stupid fake dial had to be tooled on the armor for Hordak, essentially meaning new armor. Total waste of tooling budget.
You know what wouldn't have been a waste? Full torso armor for Hordak that didn't look like a sports bra. Something a lot of fans wanted from when the original Hordak was released. So yet again a perfect opportunity wasted by Mattel/4H/whoever. Instead of fixing mistakes, or things that fans have an issue with, they waste their budget needlessly on something such as a FAKE dial instead of correcting something that people cared about.
Hey Mattel, do yourself and the budget a favor. When it comes to making "new" armor like this one for Hordak, save the money. You know damn well that all the fans would rather get an extra head for any character rather than a stupid dial on Hordaks back. Oh hi Grizzlor and your 200X face plate, I'm looking at you. Sorry, sports bra - fake dial - gold Hordak armor is more important than you.
Yea, clearly we have some real fans running the show here...
Sorry, that was the feeling I was getting, but you're right, maybe we should have a poll to see how many of us are bothered by it
EDIT: Sorry, as Tuuka points out above, there is such a poll, on Mattys own website no less, saying nearly 2/3 of fans are against it.
To put this in terms Mattel can understand, imagine if those 2/3 decided they weren't going to buy a sub next year so the could pick and choose over figures with stupid decisions like this.
Or maybe, and surely Mattel would never do this, a repaint of original Hordaks back armour will come in WP3?

I think the problem is that we get pointless dials sculpted instead of legitimate things like Bow's correct boots or 200X He-Man's sporran.
I KNEW Sy-Klone would be coming out eventually. He's a vintage MOTU figure. Now totally new figures like He-Ro, Carnivus, Count Marzo, Battleground Teela and The Faceless One are completely different.Who would have thought we would be getting Sy-Klone in April 2011 when this line first was launched??? The 4 Horsemen continue to knock it out of the park with their wonderful designs and sculpts if you ask me!!!!
