RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (Official Thread)

I searched for one, but could find no threads relating to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, formally known as Rise of the Apes.

So, anyone else excited for this? I’ve been an avid Planet of the Apes follower since I saw the first film years ago. This film has me intrigued, as it’s basically showing how it all happened.

Anyway, the main reason why I created this thread was because the first trailer is scheduled to come out this week. However, today a small (5 seconds) piece of footage was posted. It’s of the main chimpanzee character, Caesar. Now, this is truly jaw-dropping, as all the apes are being rendered in CGI. Look at this and tell me if that’s not some of the best CGI you’ve seen to date. Already an Oscar contender, IMO:

I was a bit apprehensive when I first heard the apes were going to be CGI, but this footage has really put my mind at ease. Can’t wait for the trailer.

I conceived and wrote the very first extensive POTA timeline based on the infamous "altered past, altered future" concept:

    http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/Apecalypse_Now/
(register yourself and go to DATABASE)

This timeline is based on the theory Cornelius, Zira and their spawn Caesar's presence in the past were an "anomaly"; indeed they altered the "original" timeline forever and brought to a new future hinted by the poetic end of BATTLE FOR POTA.

By the way, about RISE: outstanding & amazing CGI, forget the mess called "Alice in Wonderland", that's TRUE real-like CGI!

Wow, good work. I’ll look into that more thoroughly.

Anyway, regarding Rise, I read a script review online and they said the first time Caesar speaks is the centre piece of the film. Apparently, it’s a genuinely chilling moment.

My dream project would be a TV show that goes back to the familiar characters but throws out the apocalyptic ending from Beneath. Instead it would show Taylor build up a new tribe of humans in what Taylor hopes is a second chance but eventually turns into a struggle for dominance of the planet. The familiar characters would all be there, Dr. Zaius, Zira, Cornelius, Ursus, Nova, and maybe even some of the newer Apes like Attar and Thade from the Burton film (Thade particularly). The whole thing could be approached like Kubrick's Spartacus, with the Apes as the Romans and Thade in the role of Crassus. There would need to be many Ape colonies, not just the one Ape City, so the humans are very outnumbered. Maybe if it's long enough after the events of the first movie, Taylor might have sons now who would obviously be a huge threat to the Ape leaders since they prove Taylor isn't unique. Get music by Lost's Michael Giacchino and it could be lots of fun.

Oh, but this movie sounds okay too. Yeah, it's basically an origin story, and at the wrong end of the Planet of the Ape's history as far as what I'd like to see, but at least Earth is the titular planet again. I am really sorry James Franco isn't playing an ape, I think that could have been something interesting for him. He's no Roddy McDowell though. Serkis should do really well, I think.

RE the CGI, I can believe it'll be pretty good after Avatar, but at the same time it's hard to judge by only 5 seconds. As long as they don't CG the people, which doesn't seem to work even in the best examples, I think they'll do pretty well.

I LOVE Planet Of The Apes!!! After Star Wars, it's my favorite movie franchise. I just hope this movie is able to wash the bad taste out of my mouth that Tim Burton's "reimagination" left. I'm also excited that Boom Comics is releasing a new Apes series set in the timeline of the original series as well.

As long as it's better than Tim Burton's pile of dung. The only good thing about that movie was the ape makeup. That 5 second clip is cool, and I hope that's not the only good thing to come out of this movie.

    Stupid ass Tim Burton.

Mr shokoti did you see the first few pages of the new PoTA comic are on Booms website, looks like it's going to be a solid series based on the original films only

That clip makes me afraid of monkeys!

I'm not up on the entire franchise, I've only seen the original, the burton remake, and I've read the novel that it all taken from. (and of course I've see some clips from the Troy McClure musical... I'd love to see THAT in it's entirety!) But so far I'm definitely interested!

I sort of liked Tim Burton's version. It had is flaws, but I really liked the costuming and that they actually acted ape-like. I still haven't figured out the ending.

I've never really been big on PotA. I might enjoy them more now if I rewatched them. One of my older brothers was big into it when I was really young and I found it very boring.

Of course I can't think of PotA without thinking about Spaceballs

I wonder if this new movie will end like the others? Except for maybe the 5th movie, all Apes films had really downer endings(especially 2 & 3).

I hadn't seen that. Thanks Mark! I hope it's good. I'm just happy it's the original films instead of Burton's or something new.

I didn't like Burton's movie(like The Phantom Menace, it took me a couple years to finally admit it since I'm such a huge fan of both franchises), but I did like the ending. It's been awhile since I saw it but, if I remember correctly, there was a statue honoring Thade implying that he had somehow escaped and created that new reality of Apes. At least that's how I saw it.

you probably haven't figured it out because it doesn't make any sense. Burton basically admitted it doesn't make sense and that he just threw out some randomly absurd twist because "it's just sci-fi, so who cares". I don't remember what he actually said, but if the man doesn't like science fiction, then why the hell was he involved in a science fiction movie?

There are 2-3 interviews with the writers of the PoTA comic and they sound like they are really going to try to keep it in the same mindset and theme of the original movies.

Yeah I thought the costumers/effects were top notch but the story blew until the end. The only thing that makes me sad is that we never got an official comic or continuation to tell us what happened.

The same reason why he made 2 Batman movies even though he admitted he didn't like nor ever read any superhero comics.

That's true. Dark Horse had the license but nothing was done with the movie's final scene. I agree with you on the costumes. I also have to give it to Burton that he gave tiny roles to "Taylor" & "Nova". That was cool.

I have figured it very well, and compiled a great timeline on that too! The ending makes sense!

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is a very clunky title.

Interesting! So we'll get to see the apes rise, or are we also gona see a little of how the people Heston was shouting at "blew it up?"

That's just silly. It's an alternate reality. Obviously the apes don't throw their feces.

I’ve got a feeling this film is going to scare me. For some reason I’ve always found apes, especially angry apes, to be quite frightening. I hope this film doesn’t pull any punches. It’s got the potential to be quite chilling.

The gorillas scared me in the original series. There was a scene in the 2nd movie where the humans are hiding and a gorilla barely misses seeing them that freaked me out. Although, after hearing several stories in recent years about what apes are capable of doing to humans, they are now just as scary to me if not worse.
