Ah...figures. I was wondering what they were gona make a whole movie about if it wasn't gona be "Apes kill everyone." I always thought the humans had killed each other off with wars and whatnot, and the apes eventually evolved and picked up the slack, enslaving the last remaining humans. Granted, that stuff would have to happen fast, so I guess it goes without saying that genetic testing would be in there. Somehow, though, I never thought of the story being this...just apes starting a war in modern-day earth. It certainly looks cool, but I don't think they're gona be able to throw any surprises our way.

It's funny, if six months ago, you said to me, "Hey, how 'bout a Planet of the Apes prequel?", I would have slapped you in the face for even suggesting such a thing

But between that 1st rather chilling shot of the chimp from a few days ago, and now this trailer, I think this may be the summer movie I'm most interested in. And like you said, Kruger, there is something quite frightening about an angry ape. This movie could be quite unsettling.

ya this movie looks like it could be a lot of fun and the special effects look great. WETA seem to have done an even better job doing Apes then they did in the recent King Kong remake

BASICALLY it's the remake of CONQUEST.

But will it feature anthropomorphized apes? I mean, "humanoid" apes?

Eh. They should have called this Ape-Ocalypse.

I guess they'll do their best, but without the slavery angle of Conquest, this feels only like another "science creates monsters to terrorize us" kind of movie. I liked the smart lab animal opening his cage much more in Secret of Nimh rather than as a set up for Attack of the Killer Apes. It would have been so much cooler to see an update of the fascist state in Conquest, with Governor Breck and Ape Management. The faster they can skip ahead to the era of Dr. Zaius, the better I think this could be. Also hipster Franco as a leading scientist is setting off my "Denise Richards as a Nuclear Physicist" alarm.

While it's about the same point of Apes taking the planet away from humans (before we blow up old lady liberty of course), it doesn't appear to share many of the best parts of Conquest. I'm kind of worried actually, it looks more like eco-lecturing and CGI scenes of destruction than the compelling story of the original(s). I'm wondering if they will keep Ceasar as the protagonist or if he's now a sinister villain without the lead in movie.

Unlike the original series, they are definitely going with apes who just happen to have human intelligence rather than the ability to walk upright like humans. Even the chimps look like older chimps while the designs from the original series took them from the young chimps we see in comedies(before they become to aggressive to train).

I agree with this(although Franco is a little more talented than Richards imho), but I'm still going to go see it. Although, what you said reminded me of 2 horror movies from the 80's.

I hope they keep Ceasar and don't just make him a Thade from Burton's movie. Although, having said that, the original series got it wrong. Chimps are far more dangerous overall than gorillas.

Trailer looks pretty cool. I'm a little skeptical on how a basically endangered species overtakes 6.5 billion people so I'm anxious to see how it plays out . For some reason I keep getting the vibe I'm watching 28 Days Later .

I am thinking the explanation will be just sheer surprise, remember in the regular Planet of the Apes movies there was always pockets of resistance and they were constantly fighting (at least in Battle). We just have to see how the movie ends up, I mean it certainly won't be believable if all of a sudden we get to Planet of the Apes/Beneath/Battle for levels of control in the same movie. Even between Conquest and Battle for there was understood to be a great many years to make that happen.

Exactly, I just watched the Uncut version of Conquest and even in 2011 the issues with race and government are still around. The movie aged wonderfully and a lot of that I fear is going to be undone because the apes are now only comparable to humans via a drug (instead of natural evolution).

But I will still see it willingly on the 1st day

    Looking Forward To It

I liked the trailer, loved the music. It gives the film a very ominous tone. That bit when the one sticks out its hand for a treat, then does so again as soon as it’s given one was quite good. I think that’s supposed to be Caesar’s mother.

The CGI looked pretty good for the most part, although you could tell some of it still needs some polishing. The final shot, however, of Caesar just sitting there, looks incredibly well done. That must be a finished shot.

I think basically what Fox have done is gone down a more realistic route. The back story given in Escape never did do it for me. I can deal with a plague killing off cats and dogs, but why then would we suddenly decide to take in apes as household pets? Wouldn’t we choose something a little more like cats and dogs? Also, humans wiping themselves out in a war and then having the apes miraculously evolving over time is, again, quite far fetched. Genetic mutation and manipulating is a safer bet. If this is in continuity with the previous films then I take the origin tale in Escape as almost like a Bible story told down the generations. Chinese whispers and all that. This film is showing how it really happened.

I would be very interested to see what direction they’d go down for a direct sequel to this. Wonder how the film will end?

The Marketing Team for this movie would like to marry you.

I don't think this movie looks that much more believable really. In a few decades it may seem equally far-fetched. The buzz words that make the fantastic seem acceptable for people change over time. Radiation used to be able to do anything. In the 60s a radioactive spider bit Peter Parker to turn him into Spider-Man. In 2001, it was a "genetically engineered" spider. Oooooh! So much more believable, right? Nah, it's fiction, if the rest is done right we won't fuss over a MacGuffin like that.

Interesting that you compare it to biblical storytelling as that's how Battle for the Planet of the Apes framed Caesar's history, and there were comparisons drawn in Escape from the Planet of the Apes to the Bible as well. Personally I thought it made for a thrilling story that was both personal and epic at the same time without huge CGI armies. We don't know yet what the personal story is going to be for "Rise" or even if it has one.

Gorillas look cooler I guess, but Thade was a very cool looking evil chimp played by a very good actor so I kind of wished the movie had been better just so that he could have returned (but I'm more than willing to forget that movie otherwise). Those movie posters are disturbing BTW, reminding me of that monkey from Toy Story 3.

Well Gorillas were always the enforcer race in the classic POA movies. I am glad weta is doing the effects simply because look what they did with King Kong.

I just saw the trailer. I got to say that it actually looks good. I kind of like the idea that we (humans) did ourselves in.

I definitely think they made a good call in the original Apes movies since the gorillas made great villains and I can't see Cornelius & Zira as anything but chimps.

Thade wasn't the problem with Burton's movie(or the very underrated Tim Roth), but I'd like for Ceasar to be a little more layered than just a pure evil chimp. Although, without having Cornelius & Zira as parents, I guess this new version can make him as evil as they want to.

I've always felt that Tim Burton's POTA was a little sci fi gem.

I remember it had a nice pace, good special effects, good action, some heart tugging moments, and Mark Wahlberg was just a little added eye candy. The acting was top knotch for being wearing giant ape suits. And wasn't the chick they cast to play the 'good ape' that befriends Mark's character a virtual unknown? She kicked rocked that role!

This movie however, its looking pretty slick. I wouldn't call my self a fan of the franchaise, but I'll line up to see this all the same... even if it does have James Franco, who as far as I'm concerned is the stiffest, most boring pretty boy in Hollywood.

Sorry James. I know you mean well, and you're a nerd superhero... but I dislike your acting highly most of the time.... call me! .

    Two Interviews With The Director

Here are two pretty informative interviews with the film's director, Rupert Wyatt. He actually makes mention of one of my theories on the new film, of likening it to a Bible-like story. I guess great minds do think alike :

Helena Bonham Carter a virtual unknown in PotA? Guys, that's like thinking Ralph Fiennes was unknown when he was cast as Voldemort. Room With a View, Lady Jane, Zeffirelli's Hamlet, Howards End, Brannagh's Frankenstein, NBC's Merlin, Fight Club, Wings of the Dove, and several Oscar noms all before she played Ari. Her credentials dwarfed Whalberg's.

New interview about the movie, its a pretty good read. Seems they are wanting to revive the franchise similar to the effect Batman Begins did, but retail connections to the originals

Whoa, there’re quite a few people who have read the script, although an older version, on the IMDB message boards. I won’t read the script myself, but from what I’ve read a lot of people have got this film wrong. It’s actually much more sinister than the trailer and a lot of people’s opinions will have you believe. Mankind does itself in, big time.
