Bishart didn't mention it when he posted the pics, but this is an entirely new mold, made of silicone rubber. We were having trouble with the mother mold on the first one; we didn't design it to break down into enough pieces. And we feared the polyurethane rubber would not survive our production run. This is perhaps the best mold I've ever made, so we are really excited to start casting in it.
Those days of working in the dirt floor garage were absolute hell. It was totally frigid in there, so the resin wasn't setting up properly, the garage flooded like bishart said, and his completely insane next door neighbor kept cutting our power supply because he was cutting up scrap metal with a huge saw in the driveway. Worst 10 days of my life, LOL!
The studio build is coming along nicely, we will be casting very soon! Thanks for your support and continued interest, it really makes it worth while for us!

It's funny, because I have always been decently informed about how the casting process works and lately have been learning a lot more on that new Face Off show on Sci-Fi. Obviously doing prosthetic is a bit different than this, but I'm curious - if they are cast as one pieces, what does the step of breaking down the mother mold into chunks do? Is that to make it easier to remove from the cast mold?
I'm sure that's a noob question - but I'm actually learning quite a lot watching this.

haha i have a meme problem.
but yes. 90. haha maybe we drank more, after 60 or so you lose track. but i think its our most used material in the creation of this piece.

Yep, you said it. First of all, if the mother mold were just one piece, you would never be able to get the mold off of the original model. It's because of all the undercuts the sculpture has. Even if you did get it off the original somehow, and were able to start casting into it, once the first cast hardens, it would again be locked right into that single piece mother mold. We made this mother mold in something like 15 or 18 separate pieces that bolt together. So when we finish a cast, we can unbolt the mold and basically take the mold off of the cast, instead of taking the cast out of the mold. Our first mold had a mother mold of only 5 pieces, so it still wanted to lock on to the cast pretty firmly. This one works like a dream!

awesome! so excited and thankful to see these updates! and, like duke, i'm loving the detail of how the process of producing these is taking shape... lots to learn and appreciate about your guys' efforts. KNOW that many of us will be extremely pleased with all your hard work... thank you for doing it!!!
that said, what's with the teaser of the lower tower cover... ya gotta at least give us a wide full-fortress shot to appreciate how it looks in the big picture!!! lol. (i like it... just cruisin' for MORE!)
