MOTUC Q&A's From Around the Net (5/17/2011)

    http://www.he-man.de/

    1) If Mattel considers Stratos to be an A-List character, he could potentially be released as a Bonus quarterly variant figure. Are you aware that he did not only come without any accessory, but is furthermore not able to hold any weapon in his hands? In a potential variant release, would you reconsider this issue?

We certainly could look into this, but right now we do not have a Stratos variant planned. But you never know! We are well aware there is a lot of fan demand for this!

    2) Would a potential Laser Light Skeletor/Laser Power He-Man quarterly bonus figure have an action feature, since it was basically essential for the original Laser figure?

Not likely. The cost of the lights would be too expensive for a 20.00 monthly figure slot.

    3) We know that both Keldor and Sy-Klone are Gar. In the bios a grave danger has been mentioned regarding this race. Will you offer further information regarding this matter in future bios, or could we even hope for any more characters who were involved in this to be released in the future of MOTUC?

    Keep reading the bios!

    4) The second Grayskull bio mentions his widow. Regardless of any future character publishings, is this widow still the MYP-based Veena?

Yes. Though we may not be able to use the name “Venna” on package due to the name being owned by another toy company.

    5) Fans keep asking for a Direct-to-DVD cartoon ever since the MYP cartoon was cancelled. What can we fans do to show enough support for such a project? We understand this is a project that Mattel has no ressources for at the moment. However, looking at the very successful DC or Marvel Direct-to-DVD movies, the licence rights for such a project could be easily given to an interested animation company, couldn´t it?

We are well aware of fan demand for this, we simply do not have the resources at this time. We are putting all of our limited resources into putting out the amazing 6” figure line. We’d love to do this, it just is not logistically possible right now. Maybe one day.
    http://www.planeteternia.de/

    1) Was the Weapons Rack's performance in April satisfying enough to see more "Grayskull sets" such as the spacesuit in the future?

Yes, the Rack did very well, but right now we do not have additional sets in the line up. We're still working out when the next one can be slotted in. Perhaps in early 2013.

    2) Will the Cringer that's packed with Marlena be the only figure of Adam's "fearless" friend in the foreseeable future?

For the immediate future yes, but the door is not closed to one day possibly doing a fully articulated more adult version. Only time will tell.

    3) Many collectors are kinda baffled that Club Eternia subscribers have to pay more shipping for several figures than non-subscribers who can save money by placing separate orders. Is that going to change?

We are always working on adjusting shipping options and giving fans as many options as possible. We will pass this along to the team as the prepare for the 2012 sub sale at SDCC.

    4) A couple weeks ago, we asked about a white film on some figures:
"Many collectors noticed that certain parts of the figures get some sort of white film. It gets away easily on loose figures, but collectors of unopened stuff can't do that. How/why does that occur, and does it happen to all figures but only to those released early in the line?"
Back then, you said that you would talk to the safety group about that issue. Any news on that?

We did go to product safety about this. Without a physical sample it is very hard for us to diagnose. If anyone has a toy they want to donate back to us (through this websites webmaster) we would be happy to look at it and review!

    5) You mentioned that you have discovered concept sketches of unproduced toys which eventually could be used for new MotU Classics figures. Are there any "Powers of Grayskull" toys among them (aside of Eldor and Gigantisaur)?

No, we do not have any concepts for the 1987 Powers of Grayskull line beyond what was shown in the 1987 Mattel catalogue.
    maitresdelunivers.org

    1) Queen Marlena dress system is very great! Do you think about using it again to make outfits for the MOTUC femal action figures? I think this could be a great way to release the fantastic fashion outfit in MOTUC version!

Yes, we are looking into this as a model for future female figures with removable armor and dresses.

    2) The MOTUC Polly Pocket 3 pack is a very fun idea (and a great new sku for MOTUC)! If this 3 pack is a succes at SDCC, will you plan to release new ones with other MOTUC characters?

Currently this is a one off item from the Polly team for SDCC as a follow up to their girls of the DC Universe Polly item from SDCC 2010. It is not intended to be an ongoing line.

    3) You said a long time ago that you could release some female action figures from MOTUC in the Barbie line (which could be awesome!). Is this still in project?

We never said we would do this. It is something we looked into but in the end this is up to the Barbie team. If you’d like to see this be sure to let them know on Barbiecollector.com!

    4) Can we have one more clue or hint about the galactic protector that will be revealed at SDCC (weapon, hair color, ect...)?

Sorry, we’re done giving hints at this point. You’ll need to wait for SDCC!

    5) Have you seen a more elaborated prototype (and finished version) of the MOTUC vehicle that will be released this fall, and what is your feeling about it?

It kicks so much butt, you have no idea!
    The Ultimate She-Ra Guide

    1) Can you tell us a little more about the planning process of MOTUC's Polly Pockets (which are stunning by the way!)? How long have they been in development and how was Frosta selected to be the third character? Will they be available in stores as well as on Matty Collector?

It isn’t that complicated of a tale! After the success of last years SDCC Polly item as DC heroes, the Polly team was interested in doing a new one off set. They came to the MOTUC team with the idea of a POP set and we thought it was awesome. Toy Guru suggested Catra and Frosta as the second and third character since they are so fan demanded. This item won’t be in stores but it will be on Mattycollector.com after the show.

    2) Vintage Mantenna had four legs as two pairs fused together. When you come to make him in MOTUC, would you expect this to be the same or will he have four individual legs?

Since we don’t have a Mantenna figure in the works right now, we simply can’t comment as these conversations just have not taken place.

    3) Scott has said that Castaspella is his favourite Rebel. Who are other POP favourites in the Matty MOTUC team?

The team is really big on Frosta, Glimmer, Angella and Double Trouble. The Horsemen are also big fans of the Star Sisters.

    4) Does a character's name HAVE to be trademarked before its reveal or just before its release? Sometimes, trademark reveals can lessen the 'surprise factor' despite some red herrings being trademarked.

If you guys want the figures to remain a surprise we suggest you stop trying to dig up info on unannounced figures. You can’t have it both ways folks!

    5) Will all purchases from Matty be shipped in jiffy bags/padded envelopes from now on.

Some will. This is our attempt to keep shipping costs as low as possible.
    http://www.hordak.de

    1. After seeing an amazing custom of Skeletor an having King Hssss and Trap Jaw in hand- would it be possible to give Skeletor a new/second head with moveable jaw for any upcoming variant? That would be a really interesting update to refresh the main villain

Certainly a cool idea, but nothing like this is planned right now. Maybe one day.

    2. Two years ago Toy Guru told us that the May 2011 figure was supposed to be The Faceless One (who was moved to June). Can you give us any hint for 2013 about only one planned figure like you did back then?

We teased a 2011 figure back in 2009 to show fans how far we had the line planned down. At this point most fans know this so we won’t be “teasing” and more future figures. Especially since plans do often change and we don’t want to wind up with pie on our face (even Faceless one wound up changing from his original slot of May 2011 to June 2011 due to logistical issues!)

    3. There has been some confusion with Slushhead and Mosquitor. Will it be possible to include liquids or will it rather be sculpted like on the Mosquitor Mini-Statue?

It is doubtful we will include actual liquid due to the increased cost. But as neither of these figures are in development at this time, these conversations simply have not taken place.

    4. In the 80ies Evil-Lyn came with a glow-in-the-dark wand. In 2010 her wand didn't glow, though Scareglow and the ring that came with Tri-Klops had this feature. If and when you get to Glimmer - will her wand and headband glow or is it rather unlikely we will see this being done?

There isn’t a Glimmer figure in development at this time so these conversations simply have not taken place. (sorry for the repeat answer!)

    5. Will we ever learn what Karak Nul looked like before he died?

    Maybe! Keep reading the bios….
    Elkkthunder's Toy Room

    1) There seems to be great variation in shipping for subscriptions compared to day of sales. You were using UPS for US Subscription and MattyDay purchase, now it seems that UPS is for Subscription and Newgistics for day of purchases that take much longer. Why do the shipping vendors vary?

Because we are constantly working to deliver as many options as possible for shipping while still honoring our legal agreement for subscribers who signed up for a full year.

    4) Could we see any Elseworlds style crossover for DCUC And MOTUC 2 packs?

Nothing in the pipe right now, but certainly a cool idea!

    5) The SDCC Marlena is great, why the decision for 2 packaging variants? Are the figures any different?

To reward fans who make it out to SDCC with something special (now that our items are also available on Mattycollector.com)

1.) MegaGearMax asks: A bunch of fans were really disappointed Battleground Teela’s controversial bio didn’t explain the most pressing questions on fan’s minds since her reveal at NYTF 2011 — namely, why was her hair now blonde or why is she wearing a new costume. Classicized 200X versions of vintage MOTU characters whose changes might not be so easily explained as a change of clothes might also fall under this topic. So I was wondering: why did the bio writers decided not to try to explain why characters have such different looks?

We absolutely have through about these details. You’ll just need to keep reading the bios won’t you?

2.) Chris asks: I used the tracking for the Newgistics shipping and it makes no sense. It takes longer, and still ends up getting handed over to USPS. Why not send it USPS to begin with?

This was done to reduce shipping costs. We are looking into bringing back other shipping options in the near future, but they may cost a little bit more. Stay tuned!

5.) clark asks: When there is a customer service issue (e.g. someone receives a damaged MOTUC figure and needs a replacement), do you get involved on any level to decide how to rectify the situation or does Digital River have full discretion on how to deal with them?

Mattel and the Mattycollector.com brand team (as well as the corporate customer service team and digital groups) provide DR with a set of rules and regulations for handling customer service and exchanges which they execute on. We do not handle day to day issues.
    Figures.com

Now that the cat is literally out of the bag in regards to the pack-in Cringer figure which will accompany the SDCC Queen Marlena, what made you decide to focus the costing on extra accesories for the queen vs making a larger and more articulated Cringer? The concept of the switch-out costumes in Marlena was a great idea but did you always mean for to make Cringer in cub form?

Doing a fully articulated Cringer would have been way more expensive then the extra accessories for Marlena (especially since two of them are redecos).

Many fans were displeased when the mysterious MOTUC 3-pack turned out to be a Princess of Power Polly Pocket gift set. What was the reasoning behind making this girl-based collectible instead of a standard figure 3-pack that would have more appeal to MOTUC fans?

There was always going to be a Pollly SDCC item and the Polly team decided to theme this year's set for POP (much as last year they did Polly as DC characters). This was not a toy developed by the MOTUC team, we just consulted on it.

Every SDCC item was revealed in it's loose and fully packaged form with exception of the Queen Marlena/Cringer set? When can we look forward to seeing the final product in it's blister card?

As soon as we get in packaged samples.

So if I read this correctly, a person is upset about the lack of "surprise" due to their looking at the trademark reveals? That's like a kid complaining to his parents that Christmas is going to be boring since he already looked for & found his Christmas presents months earlier. If you want to be surprised, don't look at threads talking about trademark reveals. I don't.

There ya go. The response on Ultimate She-Ra Guide about how the Polly Pocket set was conceived is confirmation that money didn't come out of the MOTUC fund to produce it.

Oh and I had to look up Veena to see what doll is ruining the opportunity for the name to be used in MOTUC...LOL

    VEENA THE DANCE GURU

No fair. The company filed that in 2009.

The Horsemen are also big fans of the Star Sisters.

Is it five years for a TM unless it's renewed? I guess the options are to sit it out or to spell her name differently- 'Queen Vina'?

Doesn't work like that - an ® covers the wording/design *and anything very similiar to it* - otherwise, you'd get red transforming buses called "Optibus Prime" made by a company that wanted a slice of Transformers.

For a specific example, Hasbro had an application for "Airachnid" rejected as too similar to Mattel's "Arachnoid" - and I think you can agree that's less similiar than "Queen Arachnoid" would have been.

The adjective-in-front-of-name routine only works when the name itself is untrademarkable as too generic/common a word, or the lawyers think it might be, not when someone else owns the TM.

Top-secret minutes of last Mattel meeting with the 4H:

    ...
Mattel complimented 4HD on Sweet Bee sculpt. 4HD accepted with thanks.
Mattel informed 4HD they were now big fans of Star Sisters, 4HD objected. Mattel pointed out that they all had to make sacrificies in the name of marketing...

Because. Even if it was licensed out, Mattel would want their noses in it. Much like the movie that may never happen due to how they do things.

My thought is they now have the ability and the budget to do such things but it becomes available in the FY12, and they're announcing it at SDCC. So they can be honest by saying it's not in the budget RIGHT NOW, while still being able to keep it close to the chest until the big reveal.

I don't think I've ever said it before, but I really appreciate your effort on these threads MGM. While I'm on this site everyday, it's often the only site I hit. It's nice to get all of these Q&A's in one place(as well as alerting me to the other cool toy sites that are out there). Thanks!

    5) Have you seen a more elaborated prototype (and finished version) of the MOTUC vehicle that will be released this fall, and what is your feeling about it?

It kicks so much butt, you have no idea!

I think this answer is a hint.

A ram likes to "butt heads" so...could it be a hint to the Battle Ram?

I'm sad for Pixel Dan. Mosquitor was a sooner than later character; closer to the where we're at now, timeline-wise, rather than the way at the end (2017) according to the NYCC video.

This month's answers sound really craptastic to me...

No more hints until SDCC, no proper answer about the trademarks questions, plenty of corporate answers like "limited budget for this line/not enough money", "keep reading the bios" or "we can't answer or comment because this character is not in development yet". And of course, more arrogance.

I guess we won't get any interesting answers before the big reveals at SDCC.

If we are lucky, we'll get "Battle Widow" or "Battle Winged Chick" instead...
