He liked it a whole lot more than I did...

I will agree that Val did a hell of a job coloring it - but that was the only highlight of the issue for me.

So far I'm digging the Bat books, I picked up Detective, B&R, and Batgirl and will probably get Batman and The Dark Knight as well.

I also think JL and JLI will be good, but JL has gotta pick it up after the lack of everything in issue 1, and Green Lantern works in that it just flows along. The worst thing is reading a 20 to 30 page book and having it be dragged out and painful to read (like it's War and Peace or something.)

The couple I'm on the fence with are Catwoman and GL: The New Guardians. Have any of you folks heard if they'll be worth it or not, and if they do at the start or will tie in with Batman and GL and/or RL books respectively?

It seems like I was right on everything I previously said, and not only Animal Man was and still is hugely popular among comic books readers, but he is NOW the winner of the relaunch.

Please, don't wake me! Finally the greatest comic book superhero character is getting the recognition he deserves.

WW was off the hook cool. It's great seeing people so excited about Diana for once. DC really didn't change anything about HER as she's always been a warrior, but this time they focused on her warrior nature instead of her second-only-to-Superman nature.

BATMAN: Thank god for Scott Snyder (DC's best kept secret). He gets Batman and he treated this like a true #1 issue. He found clever ways to organically introduce the entire cast, and he wrote a heck of a first issue. It also felt like one of the few books that gave you bang for your buck. It felt dense without being overwritten. And I thought this was some of Capullo's best work. He's purged a lot of the "Image grittiness" out of his work, and this actually looks like a logical extension of where his X-Force work was heading before he jumped to Image.

BIRDS OF PREY: Meh. No idea who Ev Crawford is, don't care. Nothing in this issue hooked me to want to read more.

BLUE BEETLE: Solid. It basically feels like a note-for-note rebooting of Jaime's first series.

CAPTAIN ATOM: He's kind of a cross between Firestorm, Doctor Manhattan and Spawn now? JT Krul continues to write comics I don't want to read. I like Freddie Williams, but this seems like the wrong book for his art.

CATWOMAN: Guillem March is very talented. I also always feel dirty reading his comics. I keep expecting full blown porn on the next page. I can't even remember Winnick's story 2 hours later.

DC PRESENTS: Haven't been able to "get into it" yet. I don't like Paul Jenkins' work in general, and it appears he's being paid by the word here. I do love Bernard Chang, so I've flipped through it a few times to look at his art.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS: Yay! More dismemberment. I'm bored of Green Lanterns.

LEGION: You really almost have to be a LOSH fan to come close to getting this. Not as bad as Legion Lost.

NIGHTWING: More murder and blood in the bat books, but I thought this was decent. I think Higgins "gets" Grayson and Barrows continues to improve.

RED HOOD: I like the Red Hood/Red Arrow (or whatever Speedy calls himself in this) combination. I hate what Lobdell has done to Starfire. She appears to be all Id, and I'm not sure how much character growth she's going to be able to have. I always have trouble deciding if I like Rocafort's art or not. I think I mostly like it, although he tends to sacrifice storytelling for kewl layouts.

SUPERGIRL: Yawn. A whole issue of a character not knowing who they are fighting robots/dudes in mechs. It feels a little like SUPERBOY, but with the added bonus of not being at all interesting. Art was pretty nice.

WONDER WOMAN: I really liked this. I dig her new costume - it actually makes sense as an update. I thought some of Chiang's art was uncharacteristically stiff, but overall it was lovely. Although probably still a bit too OTT gory like most of the DCnU.

I didn't have too much of a problem with Starfire. She comes from an alien race that probably sees sex as humans would see a handshake.

However, I am a little dismayed over her being so alien that she thinks humans tend to look alike and not remembering anyone else, even the Titans. Especially since all the other old stories are said to be canon. Ah....the nuDC.

I would like to know more--see where it goes after the first six issues.

So far I only read Batman, but how is this a reboot? There was nothing rebooted at all in this issue. I wanted to see Bruce as Batman for like his second year, meeting his rogues for the first time, and instead, I got a lame continuation of the garbage that DC has given us in the Batman world for the last 5 years.
Can someone PM me the US number for Matty? I want to talk to someone who might has a clue of what is going on.

Captain Atom - Sucked, it was just down right stupid. But then, I hate the character to begin with it.
Catwoman - Now this seemed to be a reboot since Catwoman does not know who Batman is, which I liked. The ending has a major *** moment though. Did they do it to advance the story or are they doing it just for shock value?

When I look at the men behind these decisions it makes some sense. Granted Johns is typically more of a fan of the older school stuff, specifically the silver over the bronze age but still. But even with that he isn't above using many of these measures. I also don't recall any of his females particularly sticking out

Lee is very much a product of the dark age of comics.

And Didio got his start in soap operas.

The one sucky thing about getting paid to write about comics is deadlines and juggling that with my job that actually pays the bills, so I get my comics on Weds and it's read book, review book, read book, review book, read book, review book. Gone are the days of plopping down and just reading through a stack of books. So I've only read four so far. Two of my reviews are up:
    Wonder Woman
    Birds of Prey
I also have Supergirl and Catwoman on the way. Supergirl should pop up sometime tonight and Catwoman tomorrow. I'm also reviewing Captain Atom, which should be up Saturday.

It all kind of comes off as a bunch of 40 and 50 year-old men trying to write comics that they think teenagers will find cool.

Yikes. Tough grouping - I personally enjoyed 1 out of the 5 you list, and I'm not sure I'll even look at a 2nd issue of the other 4...

Ryan Choi was probably the only replacement of a Silver Age DC character who I liked, but I'm not happy about his being the only Atom now(Ray Palmer is now a scientist with no superhero past). I may be wrong, but this honestly seems like DC is forcing unpopular characters on its readers in order to maintain an image of political correctness. I have no problem with adding more minority characters to comics but I do when its done at the expense of "classic" characters. The more & more I hear news from TPTB at DC about the New 52, the more I think I won't be reading their books a year from now.

In our society, men are portrayed as powerful and women are portrayed as sexy.

I don't know why this is such a surprise all of a sudden.

As for Batman, I find more fault with Bruce than Selina. Old Skool Bruce would have stopped her before their romp had gotten to that point.

However, this isn't the Bruce and Selina that we know. Hell, the whole damn nuDCUC isn't the same universe...

While I do feel the violence in the DCU is becoming more & more constant as well as graphic, Aquaman's baby son was killed by Black Mantis when I was still in diapers myself.

While I don't even flip through Marvel comics anymore, the last I saw of them, they were just as bad(remember Ares?). Once DC turns all of their heroes into unlikable killers(and Didio, Johns, & Lee trash Marvel every chance they get), they will officially be the New Nu-Marvel.

I know I posted my thoughts on Batman #1, but I'm not sure about the others I have read thus far.

Catwoman - Was decent, but if the ending was done just for shock value and not story advancement, I'm out. This is Batman, not James Bond.

Captain Atom - Terrible all around.

Supergirl - It was not bad, but like Deathstroke, it did not leave me wanting more, especially since it was the same thing we have seen already.

Blue Beetle - This was actually pretty good. I think I might get the next issue.

Legion of Super Heroes - Once again we have ANOTHER comic series that is not a reboot. -_- I hated the LoSH series that started last year, and this is more of the same. I stopped reading last year's after the fourth issue, and now I am stopping after the first because I am not being tricked again.

Nightwing - I did not care for it. The "new" villian is obviously the new circus dude. The whole story was just weird and has been done before. No thanks.

Birds of Prey - It was terrible, just terrible.

Green Lantern Corp - It was boring. I liked the lady's response to Guy's job interview, but other than that, I was not impressed at all.

Storm Watch - It was not terrible, but I have no interest in reading any further.
