The Last Movie(s) You Watched

Blade Runner on Blu-Ray. It's the first time I've seen the 'Final Cut', and was amazed at how they've digitally added a new 'performance' from Joanna Cassidy onto her old body during her death scene. Wish they'd left the dove sequence alone though... Yes, the bird fying into a blue sky wasn't correct for continuity, but it was more touching.

One Piece - Movie 8 Alabasta and the Desert Princess - It is an okay adaptation of the Alabasta arc, but it is mostly to be watched just for the HD visuals rather than story telling. However, if you have not read the manga or seen the tv version, you will be completely lost.

Young Frankenstein - Hilariously awesome.

Oh that is one of my favorite comedies Kain, the best horror spoof ever made and Mel's masterpiece.

Spaceballs on blu-ray: Awesome cult sci-fi spoof i always loved since i was 6 seeing it 4 times in theaters and it looks nice in high def.

Home Alone 2 on blu-ray: a nice follow-up to a fantastic John Hughes production and Tim Curry was hilarious in this one.

Lethal Weapon Director's Cut: A great action movie for the holidays and saw it 4 times in theaters as a kid, one of my faves and the director's cut is quite good too.

Beauty and The Beast on blu-ray: Awesome disney animated movie that i saw 4 times in theaters at 10 with my first viewing being on a school field trip to one of my city's theaters and i loved it, i had a crush on Belle as i thought she was purty, lol and the film looks nice on high def too.

Moonraker has always been one of my favorite Bonds. Moore is in top form, there are some fantastic stunts, great humor, great gadgets, and Jaws. I love Jaws!

Flight

Based on the trailers you might think this is loosely based on Sully Sullenberger, but the two men have nothing in common other than landing a plane in danger.

Denzel plays an alcoholic pilot who miraculusly lands a faulty plane. Initially he's treated as a hero, but his blood test results put him in danger of manslaughter and life in prison.

It's a pretty dark movie, mostly dealing with addiction and alcoholism. Denzel does a great acting job. If you're not in the mood for a serious dark movie, I'd say the first 20 minutes on the airplane are worth it alone. It's intense and makes me scared to fly.

Lincoln

I was excited about this because of Lincoln being played by Daniel Day Lewis. They made him look exactly like him in the posters and trailer. Then I saw Spielberg directing and got worried, but couldn't miss a DDL performance.

Spielberg goes out of his way not to make something so historic remotely entertaining. The entire movie is about the tedious process of passing a house bill. President Lincoln wins a second term, but is still dealing with the Civil War, but feels ending slavery would be the most important thing to do to unite America, which is the passage of the 13th Amendment.

It's a chore to get through, but there are some good moments, mostly thanks to select good performances of DDL, Tommy Lee Jones, and James Spader. Tommy Lee Jones ends up stealing most of the scenes he's in and is probably the highlight of the movie for me. DDL is great transforming himself, but I didn't feel like I got to know Lincoln by the end of the movie anymore than I did in the first scene he's in.

Despite the subject matter, the movie isn't political if you're currently tied to the big two parties. The Democrats and Republicans in this movie are unrecognizable, mostly due to how different society was in the 1800's. Other little things such as how votes are passed are all too familiar.

You take another movie dealing with a historic time period and event such as Argo, where even if you know the ending, still keeps you engaged and entertained. The tedious mission and journey in this movie just felt inevitable.

I don't want to say it's a bad movie, but I don't think it has a mainstream appeal, not even for history buffs or fans of great performances. See it at your own risk.

The Bay

Barry Levinson directs this independent found footage movie about small lake side town terrorized by organ eating parasites in their water.

The parasite is actually a real thing that attaches onto a fish's tongue. However, this town dumps chicken poop, steroids, and toxic chemicals into their lakes, making these parasites mutate and grow extremely fast and feed on humans rather than just fish.

It's a mature found footage movie dealing more with consequences of real life actions in ignoring the environment rather than a horror movie. There is a horror movie at the end of this, but I wish the entire thing focused on the horror rather than the real life aspects of terror.

Might need to set your expectations for this. It's good, but a lot tamer than advertised.

Silent Hill: Revelation

I've never played the game, but I liked the first movie. Nothing great, but visually very fun on the eyes. I believe at the end of the first movie, the mother/daughter never really made it back to their husband/father.

This takes place years later where the daughter eventually makes it out of Silent Hill, but the mother is still stuck there. The daughter and father are constantly on the run because the evil force of Silent Hill still wants her back. She's a teenager now and can take care of herself, especially when her father disappears and she has to go back there to find him.

Visually, again, this movie is great and is all action and scares. But, the movie itself felt soul less. It's all style and no substance. I think the first one had some story and character development, this one is just a visual treat.

Cool, but skippable.

Interestingly enough, for Game of Thrones fans, this movie has both Ned Stark and Jon Snow.

Paranormal Activity 4

Well you'd have to be a big fan to have seen the 4th one. Other than the second one, I've really loved the series. The 3rd one being my favorite.

There are lots of people who don't like it and I get the reasons why, even though I don't agree. Those complaints however are completely valid for this installment.

It follows a new family: mom, dad, teenage daughter, and kid son. The neighbor's creepy kid starts showing up at the house and sleeping over for a few days. Weird things start happening.

Nothing really happens in the movie other than furniture and sheets moving around, til the end. Not scary at all. The entire movie is literally a perverted tease. It's a teenage girl looking really hot and making love to the web cam while her teenage friend tries to get her to have sex one day. Meanwhile both are investigating the weird things in the house.

The footage in this is mostly on webcam between two teenagers and some of it on iPhones and running handy cams.

There's room for more sequels, but this one was a dud after the pretty fun 3rd one.

I went to see Rise of the Guardians. It was a fun movie, very enjoyable, but I don't think it was worth the $14 ticket prices. I liked the characters though, especially Sandman and Jude Law made a great villain. Definitely a movie you should at least watch once whether it be in theaters or on BD.

Life of Pi


Pi is a young man whose family owns a zoo in India. Due to economic conditions, the zoo is no longer profitable and they decide to move to Canada and sell the animals there to start over. The ship runs into a disastrous thunderstorm and Pi survives on a life boat with a zebra, hyena, Bengal tiger, and a monkey. Obviously that can't be good and the movie never shys away from any of that or tries to be cute about it. The movie can be emotionally brutal at times, but extremely effective.

Not a huge fan of Ang Lee, but I think this is his best work. The story is great, visuals are breathe taking and too real at times, but also has a little bit of fantasy. Acting is top notch.

Leave the kids at home and check this out.

Finished out the Roger Moore Bond films over the weekend. Watched For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, and A View to A Kill.

For your Eyes only is probably my least favorite Bond film. I love the skiing sequence, Bibi's hilarious, and some of the gunfights are well done, but there isn't anything too spectacular compared to what we've seen before.

Octopussy is the first pre-Brosnan Bond film I watched the whole way through (the earliest Bond film I remember seeing any of was bits and pieces of From Russia with Love)so it definitely has some special charm. While it does have some incredibly silly parts (Tarzan Bond, Clown Bond) it also has a fantastic buildup to the reveal of the titular character and some excellent action scenes, especially when Bond is in India.

A View to a Kill is a Bond film I love mostly because of Christopher Walken's excellent portrayal of Zorin, a Bond villian who feels like a classic Bond villian. It also has a great theme song, probably my favorite since Live and Let Die. While there are some weaker parts to the movie, aspects like Bond chasing Mayday through Paris, Bond sneaking around Zorin's castle, and the entire finale make this a worthwhile entry.

I just didn't think that FYO had too many exciting sequences or a plot that differed wildly from anything that came before. While I know some folks hate Moonraker, it manages to chain together exciting scene after exciting scene building up to a huge climax. Plus, Moonraker truly has some memorable characters. Jaws, Drax, Drax's bodyguard. What exactly is super memorable about FYO? Not much, really.

From Russia with Love is arguably a better film than Moonraker, but I don't think it's nearly as fun. Tatiania is definitely one of my favorite Bond girls, though. No doubt about that.

Here's what I've watched over the weekend:

South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut: No matter how many times I watch this, I always crack up laughing.
Secret Garden (1949): I really like this version. The movie is black and white, but the garden scenes are in technicolor.
Little Women (1949): This is by far my favorite version of Little Women. All of the actors are great in this one.
Frankenweenie (2012): Local autism group was having a free day at the movies and it was a choice between Frankenweenie and Hotel Transylvania. I saw Frankenweenie (don't care for Adam Sadler). It was still good the second time around. In my honest opinion, I like this way better than Dark Shadows. And I'm the only person in the audience that got the Gamera reference.

The Blofield part was quite funny. While the skiing scene was good, I think there are a few other Bond movies with better skiing scenes.

Over the past two nights, we've watched The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill. My wife and I were both commenting on how much we liked Timothy Dalton and how much we wished he would have gotten to make another film or two before Goldeneye. Both TLD and LTK had plots that differed from more classic Bond "take over the world" plots which was refreshing. LTK was a much smaller, more personal story. I wasn't too familiar with These two (probably hadn't seen them since the late 90's) but I was quite pleased with them.

Tonight we watch Goldeneye, my personal favorite Bond for many years. It was the first Bond movie I ever saw so its nostalgia factor alone is quite powerful. How will it fare during Bondvember 2012? We'll find out!

Agreed. Personally, I think the opening bit to FYEO works as a better sequel to OHMSS than DAF does.

Scrooged on blu-ray: awesome holiday comedy i always loved since i saw it in theaters as a kid.

Grave of the Fireflies on blu-ray: very powerful and moving animated movie everyone should see, it moved me since i was in junior high when i rented it after seeing the Ebert and Siskel review and it made me shed tears unlike any animated movie has done and it looks/sounds terrific in high def.

Christmas Vacation on blu-ray: One of my favorite holiday comedies, saw it 4 times in theaters as a kid and been a fave of mine since. Gotta love the Griswold's cinematic Christmas.

Santa Claus The Movie on blu-ray: Underrated Christmas gem i always adored since i was 4 when i saw it 2 times in theaters and it looks decent on high def, nice performance by John Lithgow as the corporation person.

Bad Santa on blu-ray: Rauncy, politically incorrect Christmas dark comedy that is hilarious and off the wall.

Over the past nights we've moved into the Pierce Brosnan Bond films and have now watched Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies. These two came out during the heigh of my Bond mania when I was in Middle School. We were all playing Goldeneye, wearing the cool Bond watches sold at Gamestop, and watching these movies nonstop. Goldeneye is without a doubt the Bond film I've seen the most over the years. So, where does it fall on my list?

I'm gonna say Goldeneye is still my favorite. Maybe its nostalgia? That's ok. Watching it, I still think its one of the most exciting Bond movies ever made. The stunts are fantastic (perhaps the best opening to a Bond film ever), the theme song is excellently classic, the villians are all highly memorable, there are fantastic gadgets, and great pacing. Love this movie!

Tomorrow Never Dies is quite good as well. I like the story as it is different than the typical "world domination" plot of many Bond Villians. It has some great action scenes (the motorcycle chase, the remote control car, the fight in the newspaper printing room, and the opening attack on the terrorist bazarr), an interesting villian in Carver, and a great Bond girl in Michelle Yeoh who is Bond's equal in so many ways. Very enjoyable movie.

The Collection

This is actually a sequel to a movie called The Collector that went under the radar and maybe into tiny cult status obscurity. It was about a mysterious serial killer, in the form of Jigsaw from SAW, except without any hint to his motives or identity. He sets up elaborate and gruesome traps for his victims and basically causes them intense pain before killing them. It was pretty good, even if you don't like the SAW series because it's a very different slasher movie and not your typical one.

The sequel is fantastic. I'm actually surprised how good this was. It's genuinely scary, almost the entire time and very uncomfortable to watch since you know he's coming and he's extremely intelligent in preying on his victims. You don't need to watch the first one to follow the plot in this, but it can't hurt since the first one is good. I wouldn't mind a third one if they keep up this quality.

Look into the first one, if you like it, seek out the sequel. I think it's a limited release for now.

Citizen Kane - This is my first time seeing this movie and I thought it was really good, but honestly, I do not see why it is deemed the greatest movie ever made. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was very enjoyable. I loved how the movie was told through different characters of Charlie's life, explaining different events that happened without any exact sense of time. I also thought some of the cinematography was excellent and the story was well done. It's just that I was expecting a whole lot more out of it. In fact, I thought the movie was going to be a political movie like Manchurian Candidate, since the pictures I had always seen had him campaigning, so I was surprised to see that was only maybe 10% of the movie. Like I said, a very good movie, but not the greatest movie of all time.
