If steak tasted as good as lobster I'd stuff a cow head-first and mooing into my grill.

I know they don't feel pain, but having worked in a seafood department (where incidentally we were not allowed to sell the lobster live--before it was sold, it had to be cooked in our steamer), I do know that the death is not instantaneous because up to one minute within the cooking process, the creature still moved and tried to get out of the steamer--often, blamming its claws against the side of the appliance. That being said, many ways we harvest food may be considered barbaric by some one--people seem to find some sort of "thrill" in pointing out objections to almost any culinary practice not within their social norm. Personally, I have allergies ti the fishies whether they be shelled or not, but far be it from me to try and criticize how it is harvested for others to enjoy. Bon appetit all my ocean-roach eating friends!

Lobsters, crabs and shrimps don’t really have “faces”, so I guess people find it easier to disconnect themselves from them. That’s how I look at it. I've personally cooked a live lobster before and, I must say, it was very quick.

I was at a japanes restaurant where they cook in front of you, they cooked a freshly chopped up lobster and when it hit the grill the limbs still moved! it was a bit freaky gross and cool all at the same time.

I don't know if you can see this video in America or other parts of the world, but these people don't seem to have a problem with reconnecting with their food, or are too distant from the process. Saw this last night. Good on them, but living like that would sure be a shock to the system.

Reading this just makes me want lobster.
Not to sound like a creepy cheerleader for Uki, but it's nice to know there is at least one person on this forum who is extremely positive & friendly all the time. I don't think I could be that nice even if you paid me. If we ever give out awards for "forum member of the month", Uki gets my vote. -Mr. Shokoti

Lobsters have insect bodies and can not be turned into pets. Trying to play with one will probably get you pinched quite bad. I know some people keep tarantulas as pets too but animals like that are not pets, they're possessions. I have a cat, she has emotions, I know she understands a fair bit of English because she does understand what I say, she knows which word is her name. You can not do that with a lobster, a fish, or anything else like that. They don't have the mental capacity for it, they can't ever understand you, their brains are simply not developed for that kind of lifestyle. We can kill and/or eat those things because of that.

You can buy frozen lobsters whole or lobster tails at most grocery stores. I actually avoid it on cost, really. I bought a whole frozen lobster once and found so little actual edible meat in it for the $10 it cost me. The tail, small bits in the claws, maybe not even 1/4 a pound of real meat. I also got crawfish once, one and a half pounds. So little of them is really properly edible that I think I was able to eat 20% of what I paid for.

There's too much debate on eating the main innards of both, some say you can, others say the stuff is too toxic to eat. If even scientists are unsure if I can eat it then something is wrong.

I've started avoiding meat with bones in it anyway. I don't care for paying for extra bits, by weight, that have to be thrown out. I go for ground beef, fish(tilapia, mainly), chicken gizzards and pork loin. It's cheap and I know all of what I buy is edible.

In my case i just say a little prayer and hope it doesn't go to waste.
I'd be more ****** if it died with the purpose unfulfilled.

Besides, even Jesus ate meat and fish. What am I gonna do tell him he was wrong?

"Not exactly" is a common phrase. You are reading too much into the it's meaning.

I think someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. Here's what it boiled down to. Since there are many members on the board that take issue with how the animal dies, but can't/do not wish to drop it from their diets. I merely suggested, then be aware of where the meat came from and be a little more respective of it and not be wasteful of it. (Buying too much that it goes bad, ordering more than you will eat to toss the rest away.) Understanding that it's not like an apple the tree will grow back.

And the last bit about little baby Jesus... that was just a little bit of humor.

That's true, some people have no choice, too many people are dying because they have nothing to eat. We're really fortunate if we can say "I won't eat this or that" for reasons not related to health.

I would add trying to be less wasteful with all sorts of food, not just what's taken out of animals, it's really depressing throwing away any food when we see things like the famine in Somalia and neighboring countries, and that's just the event making the news, there's people starving all over the world that we never hear of.

I think the idea of eating something may be enough to be repulsed even without knowing for sure what it tastes like. There's a lot of things that make me sick that I've never eaten and I'll never try .

I guess having been up all day on only 3 hours sleep led me to be a little more curt than I normally would have been. I honestly didn't see the connection between what you said & the topic of the thread. I appreciate the answer and am honestly sorry if my brusque demeanor upset or angered you.

i was flipping around the tv and came across gordon ramsey's shark bait. apparently, fishermen catch sharks, cut off the fin (for shark fin soup) and toss the rest (or use it for bait).

this seems far worse than anything else that's been mentioned in this thread.

now, i'm no lover of sharks, but it seems very wasteful to toss the rest of the shark and since this is practice, i'll never try shark fin soup.

I'd say that is more incredibly cruel than wasteful(although, it's wasteful as well). What I also feel is wasteful is when they use dead fish in comedy routines or if a local radio station has a Thanksgiving themed "bowling with frozen turkeys" contest. On the surface it seems to be just good fun, but when you think about it, animals being killed just to amuse people seems wasteful not only of a life but wasteful of food that starving people could use.

Too true. I was thinking of other animal like lions that can't one day choose a vegan lifestyle and survive. But your is an excellent point as well.

Another good point, no food should be wasted.

Is it horrible to say I was really craving chili crab?... meaning of dispatching the crab in big pots of steaming chili sauce. But I blame Anthony Bourdain as well.

No offense then. I just have never seen you reply so brisk in posting. I may have been as well under those same circumstances.

Yeah, that is a big problem the US has with Chinese and Japanese fishermen sneaking into our waters. Not cool!!

That is a little appalling. I've heard of something like "Bowling for frozen turkeys" I did not realize they were bowling with the turkey!!

I don't know how many "shock jocks" do that(although it seems like a lot of those radio bits & contests are recycled all over the country), but I know they've done it in Chicago. I've never participated in one, but I'd be surprised if they actually ate the turkeys after they were sliding all over the ground.
