The MotUC He-Man face (not the blushing issue!)

Hey, I was just watching this photo off a simple Google image search:

Am I just totally being blinded by my personal, silver line clouds filled retro reality, when I compare the faces of these two figs? Or is the vintage one just hands down superior in almost every aspect, like I think it is? Blushing aside, do you think it was intentional for the MotUC-toyline makers to not go for the vintage look at all? If so, was there a reason for this? Or did they try, and (obviously) fail?

    Just curious!

Though I loved MOTUC when it first came out, I noticed immediately that MOTUC He-Man was much prettier than his vintage counter-part, who looks hard, battle-worn & - well - not so pretty!

Too bad the 4H stick to terrible vintage faces like Clawful, but deviate from He-Man!

Still - I'm glad they "updated" Teela's face....

That picture isn't a true comparison. The "vintage" figure there is actually the 2000 commemorative re-release, which had a significantly different face than the 80s original.

Eh...I don't really know. I don't see "better" or "worse" on either of the two. There are some minor differences, but otherwise the MotUC face just looks like an updated classic version. I'd be curious to see how someone might make an "accurate" face in line with whatever you think is missing between the old face and the new face.

Sure is! The 2000 commemorative version is loads different. I think the classics face looks pretty good. Still....there is something about that original face that totally rocks. Like seeing an old friend

The vintage head always looked more like a 40 year old guy with some hulk-like facial expressions...

How bout a picture of a real original He-man figure? The re-release face looks like a mutant.

Yup, that's the face I remember....I forgot about the swords being rounded like that, nothing like jabbing someone to death. I do see the resemblance to the vintage figure now, I knew when I saw that first pic before, there was something not right about that head and face on the 80's He-Man. I happen to like the face on the Classics version, looks more realistic, and after seeing a vintage He-Man after so long, it does look like the old original version.

There is something perfect and unique about the original face that the new one doesn't capture.

I seems to me they were trying to get the "essence" of the original but improve or modernize it. However, the sculpt falls a bit short of the original though it is much better that the 200X version.

I would certainly like to see the Four Horsemen try another sculpt of the face and see if we could get closer to the original. The hair could be improved and brought more in line with the vintage as well.

Wow, I hadn't realized the commemorative's face was so different. The original does look like a hardened warrior; the commemorative looks like a constipated Dr. Zaius.

I think the classics version is close to perfect, although the eyes have always seemed a bit off the way they and the brows are painted.

I have a sneaking suspicion we'll see a FILMATION He-Man head pop up soon (just like the Alcala Skeletor head). Packed in with Thunder Punch He-Man would be nice...

That may happen, but I'd rather have a better "vintage" version. Not sure a Filmation version will fit with the aesthetic of the line.

(BTW, not sure why they changed the shield so much either. He-Man 2.0 time?)

I was a little disappointed with the classics head sculpt also. The features seemed a little soft compared to the original. Somehow the bonus He-Man face that came with Man-E-Faces looks better.

Now THAT'S a familiar face! I agree, there was just something about the original face that made it all fit right. Sorry, the 2000 re-release, while nice to have, does NOT bring any of that back at all. He looks like somebody completely different.

I prefer his 80s face. Not because i'm a purist. In some cases I much prefer updated heads (Clawful, Mantenna, Leech) but I find the 80s He-man face more heroic looking.

I prefer the vintage look. Classics version looks too young.

I like the MOTUC He-Man head but I do think it could have been better. I made a Photoshop mock-up using the same head but just tweaking a few things. After making this mock-up, the original face almost looks like the 200X face to me.

Edit: I reworked the hair too.

I think you can really see the superiority of the original hair in the comparison pics. For some reason, the right side of his hair (left in the pic) that "wisps" outward is not sculpted very well on the MOTUC version.

Even though the hair is a separate piece on the new version, (why? I'm not sure) the sculpt could certainly be improved.

The differences in the face are quite pronounced: the different upper lip size and shape, the vintage nose is shorter and thicker, the cheek and jaw bones are different and the black eyes and eyebrows certainly create a different feel.

I think the old sculpt feels like an iconic warrior and the new feels like He-Man has a hangover from the 200x series. He has a hint of Anime in there still.

I wonder if they felt the old sculpt was lacking in some way, because they took quite a few liberties with the update.

Hmmm...really, you think so? ...-_-;;;;...Did you possibly only have the hard-head (read:sucky) He-Man fig from the eighties? Since I just took a snapshot of my vintage figure, and I think he actually looks sexier than the commemorative re-release He-Man!

Add me to the list in favor of a more toy inspired head sculpt - I love that original 80's sculpt!
