Illumina Day!

This idea was inspired by a suggestion in the MattyCollector Illumina thread I read from Bruticus and I have been working on it since then.

Tonight, I'm ready to introduce Illumina Day!

This is a fun event meant for fans of Illumina to help spread the word about the character and show your support for her. You can take part in this even if you had no idea who she was before reading this thread. If you think she and/or her cat would make a cool figure in MOTUC, you should take part!

I can only handle one campaign (

), but, you could do art or customs of Filmation Skeletor and Illumina, for example. That would support both your cause and her cause.

Anything and everything relating to Illumina would work. Like JonWes' now infamous The Mighty Spector kissing Illumina picture. It's satire and a really awesome drawing! Anything from serious to silly is a-ok as long as it shows support.

I think using 2.0 buck with BG Teela's arms and legs, a new two-part dress, head, cape and a weapon. That's five new tools, or four if the cape is repaint of BG Evil-Lyn's.

Hmmm maybe we should include a phone Mattel campaign on Illumina day, there hasn't been a phone Mattel day since the 2004 2K She-Ra issues. If enough people phoned maybe the fan plee for Ilumina wil reach the ears of people above scott, perticularly when they realise they would only need to tool a new hair piece, dress and a weapon for her and a skull cap for the battle cat mold. They could use the griffin saddle for Illumina's snow cat.

I've updated the list of sites that have Illumina Day threads too! I'm at 13 and awaiting registration confirmations from 2 German MOTU sites and French one. I want this to truly be a worldwide event!

Ok... sorry if this sounds rude cause its not intended to be... but what the heck is Illumina????
I figured out she is blue with a cat but thats about it. I keep hearing about her. but i still am no closer to knowing her or why folks are so passionate about her.

I don't want this to come off jerky cause its the truth, i am fairly new to MOTU and knowledge is lacking. is she a fan creation from the old contest. is she from pre production art like vikor?

I keep hearing about support for her but no one is telling me WHAT i should be supporting. obviously people feel passionately about her so why not share that passion!

NOTE* forgive me i missed her bio at the top of the page (very cool) Still where did she come from concept wise

No problem. Illumina is a character meant to make her first appearance in MVCreations' MOTU Volume 3, Issue 4 comic. She was to have the story line in the bio that's on the image I posted. The variant cover of Issue 4 (showing Illumina and her Cat) was advertised in Volume 3, Issues 1, 2 and 3. Then, she never appeared in Issue 4 because Mattel instituted a "no new characters" policy and put a strict limit on the characters that could be used and the stories that could be told. This could have been because the 2002 toy line or show wasn't doing as well as they would have liked, but I'm not 100% on that. Other companies have put restrictions like this in comics and TV shows too. The Justice League Unlimited cartoon was not allowed to use Superman or Batman supporting characters and villains for a period of time, for example.

Anyhow, since that time, Illumina has gotten sort of a cult following over the years. It began when she kept being advertised though, with MVC readers wondering who she was and how she would fit into the story.

Thanks! That means a lot.

I can't take all the credit though. gbagok made the main image for me (and that's his illustration of Illumina). Mine was more psychedelic and looked neat, but nothing near as good as his!

Also, Dark Sorceress helped spread the word to October Toys.

You know I'm a Josh supporter, but I'm not so sure how a Josh Day would fair...unless everyone made some potato salad. That joke has now stuck with him like it was his official story!

Anyway, so it's been three days since the Illumina Day campaign began (for some sites...some were just started today and some still have to be started

). I think things are going pretty well! Some of the threads have no replies yet, which is expected. Other sites I didn't really expect to get replies to...actually have some support! That thrilled me.

The initial response so far has been really positive! People who had no idea who Illumina was are liking her (for the most part), this one guy LOVES her cat, so I'm pretty excited at this point!

There are a very small amount (probably under 5 people) that still aren't interested in her, and that's okay. One thing that I thought was pretty interesting though, was hearing people would prefer her and her cat over the following MOTUC characters:

- Star Sisters
- Fearless Photog
- The Mighty Spector

I always thought Fearless Photog was a highly sought after figure? There seems to be a lot of hate for him. I love him.

Other people said they don't care about the character too much, but will buy her if they make her!

I know it's still REALLY early, but initial analysis seems to show that people really want her, think she's okay, don't care for her but would still buy her and then a very small amount are completely uninterested. That kind of goes with the "people will buy cool looking action figures" idea. I know I do that! If I see a cool looking figure in the store and have NO idea who he/she is, I will for sure buy it. Even if I don't collect the toy line.

I agree with a property like MOTU its all about how good a character looks there is soo many different characters out there to know who everyone is would be crazy. I buy anyone who looks good to me and illumina fits that bill perfectly

Yay! I've been working on some images to show potential parts re-use and new parts needed to make Illumina and her Cat in MOTUC for a while now. Pixel Dan's image of Battleground Evil-Lyn's cape was the last one I needed. I unveil my idea for Illumina and her cat in MOTUC which will keep costs down, while giving them unique enough pieces to make them look like different characters and not straight repaints.
