I always imagined the title to be like Indiana Jones or Harry Potter. The first one would have been called John Carter and the Princess of Mars, and the second would have been John Carter and the Gods of Mars and so forth. Anything is better than just John Carter. Of course, knowing that part of the problem was the fact that Disney just did not want Mars in the title, then the alternatives are pretty sparse.

Also, I think He-Man on its own would make a good title. But maybe I'm being a bit bias there.

Now that makes sense. It probably would have made the movie easier for the not-quite-familiar-with-the-novels public to get a general idea as to what this movie is about. I know they didn't want to have "Mars" in the title but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Too bad Disney didn't do it.

john carter is a movie for summer season ,no for march.

250 million for a march movie ? I wonder how accumulated the most successful film released in March

If I had to guess what was the most successful March release I would say Alice in Wonderland or 300.

Yes, I think it was Alice in Wonderland. I seem to remember them saying that Hunger Games might have a chance to beat the record.

Plus I'd bet most of the casual audience don't even know what Masters of the Universe is by name, as they've probably called it He-Man all their lives anyway! Certainly wouldn't be a bad thing if they named it that.

On a side note, I'd never heard of John Carter until the trailer for this movie, and since I've not seen it I still don't know what its about. (Apart from him being on Mars, which I've picked up entirely from this thread!) It certainly doesn't have the nostalgia wave to ride on like one of the biggest cartoons and toy lines of the 80s.

I see what you're saying but do you really think a MASK movie would do that well in this day and age.?

Don't know really. Although MASK was one of my regular watches for the period it was on (although it wasn't one I bought a load of the toys from), I don't recall it as being as all-domineering as He-Man and Transformers was on TV and in the toy stores. Certainly not for pretty much the entire decade.

I could be wrong though, it might do awesome! Anyone have any viewing/sales figures for MASK in comparison to Masters or the giant robots?

Watched it today, not a bad movie by any means.
Will probbly watch it againin 3d with my wife sooner rather than later.
I, however, was quite familiar with the character, that i got to know in my younger days: though i just read one of the books i read loads of comics fro the Virginian hero: in Italy they were sol together with Tarzan's classics, in Switzerland he had his own booklets (that, being in german, wer possibly from a german pulisher, who knows). They were from DC comics, of that i am pretty sure. Loooved those! One question to those in the knows: but did he (i mean Carter) not get shot while carrying a wounded comrade? Is'nt this how he finds himself on mars????

I see what you mean, but to be fair, MASK is no He-Man. MOTU was gargantuan, a billion dollar brand.

It was a joke. I knew fantombe was talking about MOTU. Just having a bit of fun. Considering that MASK is owned by Hasbro it probably will get a film, but will it come out before or after the MOTU film?

Haha, sorry. Seeing Internet jokes and sarcasm has never been my strong point. And yeah, you're probably right. Hasbro just seem so much hungrier than Mattel. Say what you want about the quality of Hasbro toy-based films so far, but you've got to respect them for what they've achieved in such a short space of time. Mattel are still stuck at the starting line, whilst Hasbro continues to overlap them.

Sad thing is, seeing the potential, if MOTU was owned by Habro there would have probably already been a movie by now.

Just found out about "John Carter" this weekend... what's up man. We hae conan and now this, but no word about a motu film... by the time we get one, it's gonna look like a bite off of these other films.

Anyway, I slapped this together to express the oddly close resemblance of John Carter's gear to He-Man's...

Awesome art, you never disappoint. Shouldn't John Carter be pointing out how He-Man's outfit looks suspiciously like Carter's outfit? I mean John Carter only came out 70 years before He-Man.

Oh, yeah. I'm sold. I definitely want to check it out. If not for anything else than the God Of War vibe these movies give off.

Considering how the industry already sees John Carter as a horrible failure I would say we shouldn't expect He-Man to make it to the big screen in the next decade or so...
