This looks fun! I do wish we were getting Scarlet, Baroness, and Destro though...![]()
I have been watching the trailer over and over and I am still impressed. I have not been this excited by a trailer since Star Wars Episode 1 (and we all know how that turned out).
This is, at least, a good start. The Red Ninjas toward the end made me feel like I was reading an issue from the old Marvel series
Finally, The Rock has come back to GI Joe

Not to sound like a creepy cheerleader for Uki, but it's nice to know there is at least one person on this forum who is extremely positive & friendly all the time. I don't think I could be that nice even if you paid me. If we ever give out awards for "forum member of the month", Uki gets my vote. -Mr. Shokoti

Looks very promising! I enjoyed the first, but there were elements about the movie that I didn't care for. I'm looking forward to this sequel!

The first movie was a decent movie and fair adaptation but that is about it.
This movie it's hard to say. The trailer looks like fun but that is all I can say. I can understand Baroness missing based on how the first movie ended. The nice with Cobra Commander and Destro now is they are masked so you can do a Darth Vader with them.
One of the problems with G.I. Joe is the large potential cast, and sadly many characters become redundant when put into a movie format (even the animated series have had this problem).
At least it doesn't look like we are getting powered anime suits.

Rob Liefeld isn't a comic artist, he's a women's clothing designer. Think about it
Destro being out is the only real objection on the villain side, Baroness is understandably MIA due to the events at the end of the last movie.
I think its good to keep out some big villains and heroes from time, you put too many in and you have the same issues that plagued previous superhero type movies (too many stories to maintain and so the movie just is badly written to support it).
This movie looks like its going to pass the torch from Duke to Roadblock with a younger Flint being groomed to take over officially. This kinda mirrors the cartoon a bit with Roadblock since a lot of his episodes he was a field commander, or at least a team leader due to circumstance
In the comics It was Hawk-->Duke-->Flint-->Sgt Slaughter-->Beachead as rank of command.

Awesome trailer. I really liked the first movie (I thought it was campy fun), but the trailer paints promises of something way more awesome than that.![]()

Maybe Channing's Duke is going to get replaced with someone new eventually? Couldn't someone else use the code name "Duke" after the original guy died?
We might see Destro or the Baroness at the end.
Well, we are also assuming he does die he could just be significantly injured. Yes the trailer could be seen as implying he dies.
Destro could even show up at the start of the movie and be captured or some such. I do like the idea of having the villains kind of wax and wane, where they have to go into hiding and rebuild while another villain takes center stage, I think it becomes not realistic but more plausible which is the real problem people have all this. I think the word realistic gets over used, and what most people really mean is plausible. Something can be plausible and not be realistic.
I even think the waxing and waning was the intent Nolan had with the Joker in his Batman movies, it's actually closer to how they are handled in the comics. This also solves the have to kill them thing of the last decade and a half. Have Cobra Commander be the ultimate leader, but have generals deal with the Joes right now. The generals being Zartan, Destro etc.
This sets up the possibility of more sequels.

I'm loving the Commander, and I can't wait to see how The Rock does Roadblock!
Rise Of Cobra was a fun movie but it wasn't GI JOE. At least not to me. This appears to be much more of an update to the property rather than a re-imagining. There are some pretty damned recognizable characters/vehicles in this clip that are likely to have the Fan-Boys GEEKED.
I don’t know that I like that, apparently, Roadblock is the “leader” in this film but I get that he IS the Star of Stars in the cast. Can’t wait to see more.

I suppose it's possible, but I don't know why they would. First of all, I consider 'Duke' to be one Conrad S. Hauser. But that's just me. Second, bringing him back is kind of unnecessary. Yes, he was the Joe field commander, but that role can be filled by a number of folks (Flint, Beach Head, Lt. Falcon, Roadblock...)

I never liked Channing Tatum as Duke, not the fact that he was now as officer in the movie. Duke was and will always be, the Joe's 1st Sergeant.
When it comes to ranks in GI Joe, General Hawk was his direct line supervisor. In reality, there were plenty of Joe's that outranked him, Stalker (Sergeant Major), Flint (Warrant Officer 2), Falcon (1st Lieutenant), Ace (Captain), Wild Bill (Chief Warrant Officer 4)

personally i was very impressed with the first one.
this one looks like it takes a step forward. cant wait. and i am not even a GI joe guy.....
Here's a couple threads from TNI and JoeSightings from several years back that details the full Rank structure of the team (From a comics canon standpoint)

This does not, however, actually address Chain of Command....
http://www.yojoe.com/faq/gifaq.shtml#h2
"2. What is the G.I.Joe Chain of Command?
On the filecards, all the characters were given ranks from E-4 Corporals to Generals and Admirals. So perhaps you could rank them this way.
But in the cartoon, a clear cut chain of command was established in the episode, "The Most Dangerous Thing in the World". This chain of command went from General Hawk, to Duke, to Flint, then to Beachhead and Sgt. Slaughter.
But in the comic book, a then Colonel Hawk took his orders from General Austin and General Flagg. After he was promoted to acting commander of G.I.Joe, Duke was named field commander of G.I.Joe. When Hawk was promoted to General, he somehow returned to field duty again.
But in the toys, just to make it interesting, General Hawk wasn't the only general. General Flagg was released and an Admiral Keel-Haul was released.
Some have speculated (quite extensively, I might add) that the chain-of-command depended highly on the situation. Certain specialists might lead missions because of their expertise in that area - or certain men or women might be placed in charge due to seniority.
The truth is that there is no real clear-cut answer."

Nice post.
I'm totally fine with the movie filling the field commander role as the situation dictates. Hell, reinsate the good Mr. Coulton and have Bruce blasted Willis running America's most highly trained Special Missions Force. Have Flint calling the shots on the ground, the Peoples' heavy machine gunner be a one man anti-EVERYTHING ordinance, and Snake Eyes be Snake Eyes. THAT is how you establish a franchise.![]()

This is how I have always viewed GI Joe, its all about the situation and the context of decisions.
And from what we know of the trailer, GI Joe was attacked and setup with only a few survivors so they probably default command to Roadblock since he seemed to be the most battle hardened of the group

You mean like everyone in the original movie was
I mean come on the entire movie world is a retcon and in a lot of areas not a good one.
If Flint were just as empowered as Duke then why was he not in the first movie leading the team? Its the movie verse and you just need to accept that origin stories have to happen for the film to progress, its the downside to a major motion picture imho
I wonder if Roadblock will rap, I would die if he did![]()

Chain of command and rank are interesting beasts. From the research I have done for personal projects just because you outrank someone doesn't mean you have authority over them, and in some cases just because you have authority over someone you doesn't mean you outrank them. Classic example of the latter is a captain of a ship, while aboard the captain's ship can have higher authority than someone who technically outranks him.
You can also be the highest command over a special forces unit, and have a higher rank but not have authority over someone of a lower rank.
And about them being 'green,' the first movie was an origin. Why movie adaptations always have to start with an origin is beyond me. To make matters worse, this again following the comic theme, the bad guys have invaded their lair (granted the White House isn't exactly their lair but still).
