This is looking cooler and cooler. I love the return of that eerie siren effect in the trailer! Not that I didn't love the Aliens build-up-to-detonation music, but I think it was time to retire it when a Macaulay Culkin movie used it (admittedly one where he was an evil psycho terrorizing 11-year-old Frodo, but still).
I did not expect to see the crash of the derelict ship though! Once again Iwish we could pretend nothing else was done with the franchise after Aliens. What other "weapons" are in that ship?!

Just saw the trail on Attack of the Show, so their enthusiasm never seems that genuine. So is this suppose to explain the origins of the Xenomorphs then? All I saw was a lot of dramatic stings in space, and a blonde lady wearing Marlena Glenn's space bubble hemet...which is pretty awesome when you think about it XD!

Can't wait! I've been waiting for a scifi movie like this for a while. It looks cool as all get-out. Not sure it's actually the origins of the xenomorphs. I think the main tie in might just be the space jockey.
Also, the blonde is Charlize Theron. I hope Hot Toys makes here and/or Fassbender in their suits.
Oh no the Xenomorphs are in there, stills from the set show them
I am not sure if this going to explain their complete origin but it is going to work towards setting up Alien nicely, its supposedly going to show the Space Jockeys and why they were carrying the Xenomorphs (as weapons?) and what happened to lead to the ship ending up the way it did in Alien

Looks fantastic. I love the fact that Ridley Scott is still playing down the Alien connection. That may as well have been a trailer for Alien 5.
I don't see anything.
So is this a prequel to Alien?
Prime example of a ****** trailer. No clue what I just watched.

Fox has maintained on several occasions that it's not a prequel to "Alien", but when you watch that trailer it is undeniable that movie is connected to it. The jockey, the derelict Space Craft, certain shots that are almost identical shots to certain scenes from the first movie.
Bleeding cool did a great breakdown almost frame by frame of the trailer and the clues from it. Check it out...

If it's not actually 'linked' then it's certainly homage... And not only is there nothing wrong with that, I rather like it. I also think it's interesting that if it is linked that we're not being hit over the head with it but are, rather, being allowed to think for a change in fill in our own blanks,.
FOX can maintain that all they want, everyone knows it is and there is even a Xenomorph in the movie
I think FOX just does not want to spoil the twist and the ties, but everyone involved with has basically confirmed its a prequel to Alien at least for origin story purposes
I would not be surprised though if this is another ship that crashes, so that its not ACTUALLY the prequel to Alien but shows us how the ships found their way onto other planets (even though I still firmly believe its a direct prequel to Alien lol)

I think they are downplaying the prequel aspect because if a xenomorph does show up (haven't seen the set pictures myself) I imagine it will be in a limited fashion and they don't want people to think this is a full-on ALIEN movie. But they've said many times that it takes place in the same universe and obviously they are going back and filling out the Space Jockey background.
It started off as an Alien prequel, but it is no longer. However, the movies are linked... including the Space Jockey, Weyland corporation and androids. Like you said, if Aliens do show up, they play a very minmal role. Even Ridley said they wouldn't be in it, but someone above says they saw a photo of them onset. So, let's see how this plays out.
If Jack Bauer was on Lost, everything would have been solved in 24 hours!
If Jack Bauer was on Heroes, he wouldn't need to save the cheerleader to save the world.
I don't see how it's stopped being a prequel when it's still featuring Weyland Utani, set on LV24 (or a dead ringer for it), features the same derelict ship and space jokey (or again, dead ringers), and is set prior to the original Alien. I mean I get wanting to emphasize that this new movie is treating the non-xenomorph elements of the original movie as worthy subject matter, but that doesn't mean it isn't a prequel. It's a more interesting concept for a prequel than say Aliens vs Predator, but that's not the same as being something non-prequel-y.
Simply because the director and writer have said that they prefer this to not be a prequel.

But Ridley Scott’s comments have never really made sense since day one. What was his first one? Something about “Alien DNA”? Whatever that means. That recent question when asked if the xenomorph will appear, his answer was just nothing but sarcasm. I think he wants people to think it’s a denial, but it didn’t sound like an outright one to me. If they’re not in it, say so and move on. The fact that he’s not giving a straight answer is just fuelling rumours of their appearance even more.
One things for sure, the derelict and the space jockey are both in the trailer. Alien eggs were first discovered on the derelict. I just find it hard to believe that the xenomorphs won’t feature in some shape or form. The main word there is form. I have a feeling that we’re going to be seeing an earlier version of the xenomorph, a sort of work in progress.
Plus, the actors involved, namely Michael Fassbender and Idris Elba, have both stated in interviews that they are in a new “Alien film”. Fassbender has also confirmed that different creatures, although he didn’t say what kinds, show up. Make of that what you will.
Let's be clear about something, from what I've seen in the trailer.
This is NOT the same ship from Alien. Two things mark this: 1. The ship's arms are not the same as the one on Archeron/LV-426. Also, the Space Jockey's chair in the trailer is clearly functioning, whereas the Space Jockey in Alien was fossilized, which means the ship on LV-426 had been there for a long, long, long time. Prometheus is supposedly set about 30 years before Ripley's time.

We don't know what the planet conditions can do, 30 years could be more than enough time to fossilize something. I mean we can suspend disbelief somewhat with a movie about Aliens
That only stems from both disliking the way the franchise went after Aliens, both do not really want to be associated with the Alien license because it has become a farce
This movie and Alien will be related, we just do not know the direct relationship yet (if its an origin story of space jockeys and xenomorphs in general or the events which start the film in Alien).

OK, I really have no idea what the cast and crew said and whether this is a prequel or not, but I just want to point out that it is possible that this movie is set in the same universe as Alien, 30 years in the past and still NOT be a prequel. In that case, they would have the same corporation, and similar ships but story could be totally unrelated. For a movie to qualify as a prequel, it must explain how the story began or at least set the stage for what happens later. That may not be the case here.
Maybe Ridley Scott started this project as an Alien prequel but then came up with some new concepts he thought were more interesting and decided to pursue that, unrelated, storyline?
It might even be an alternate universe, like the new Star Trek movies. Maybe Aliens will appear briefly, but then humans somehow destroy them, and a completely new franchise branches off without Aliens?
I think that's just semantic gymnastics. If it's set in the same universe but at an earlier time and deals with anything of the same subject matter (and why bother if it doesn't), it's a prequel, no matter how much the filmmakers want to distance themselves from that buzz word. To be honest, if it's not the same ship and a different vessel of obviously the same make with the same pilot--or whatever the jockey's role is--on a different and yet superficially identical planet, why bother setting it before the first Alien and not after? The only reason to set it before is to, as you said, set up something in the original movie, even if it's just the company's interest in sending the Nostromo to Archeron (I suspect the warning signal would also be addressed).
I don't think this is comparable to Star Trek, which had dealt with alternate time lines and realities plenty in its history and was also so thick with continuity that they really did not know where else to go with it (though I'd argue Abrams's ****** Vulcan-less path wasn't the best either). With Alien, we knew so little about the universe around Ripley that it's still too much of a blank slate.
Hopefully this sets in motion a return of James Cameron to do a direct sequel to Aliens which showcases the Colonial Marines, and then makes anything after Aliens completely redundant.
I must admit, I had heard rumblings of an Alien prequel but until this thread was started I didn't know anything more was happening with it. My interest is piqued
