Serpos idea originates from 1980's newspaper comic strip?

In 80's MOTU newspaper strip, it turns out that the snake on Snake Mountain is a living being, brought back to life by King Hiss. Here it's called "Sarkedon the destroyer of worlds":

So does it originate from there OR is it something that Mattel came up with?

Thanks so much for this.. I saw this years ago.. I was searching all over trying to find it again..

I have no idea if MYP used this as inspiration for Serpos.. I'm pretty sure they did though. Too much of a coincidence to randomly come up with the same exact concept.

On a side note.. Why is King Hiss drawn like that??

That's really cool! I've only read the first story from the strips (Rock People) and have yet to read the second one (Snake Men), so it's really fun to discover this concept originated in the strips.

I think whoever produced this comic strip probably came up with the idea, rather than Mattel coming up with it. I think it's a coincidence that both parties came up with the idea, although it's similar in both cases.

Here that's his true form. When he was awoken, he appeared in the familiar human look.
