At this point I'm almost tempted to paraphrase Scott form a while ago... Ah, what the hell: "If fans want X that way, learn how to customise".
I saw this all play out with TMS. I hate that character and I can't see any way to improve it. But I like SLL just the way he is. All the pictures I've seen with furry pants (oh please!, He's a Knight! Take it from a Brit, Knights didn't have furry pants!), He-Ro's bejeweled pants (again, no Knights with Vajazzle!), and the terrible washed-out Photoshop paint jobs. Honestly people, you're just making him look worse.
I know it's all subjective, but flogging a dead horse springs to mind. If this is the way Geoff wants SLL, this is the way SLL should be made. Endless debating and Photoshopping isn't going to change the way he looks (at least, I hope not, because I'll be one of the ones who doesn't get him if he's made with furry or jeweled undies!). Why not get him as he is and paint him your own specifications? It's not that hard to do!
I'm off to see if there's a thread that doesn't micro-analyze this figure...
Lol!

I find it hilarious that Sir Lazer Lot is a "ripoff" of another knight character(he's supposed to look like a knight, so of course they would look similar), but He-Man looking like a blonde Conan or Mer-Man looking similar to The Creature is business as usual. Disliking his look is one thing but I don't think Mattel is hiding the fact that he's a knight. He has "Sir" in his freaking name(which is what happens to those knighted).
I agree with everything you just said except about hating TMS(I think he's OK) and getting specific about which photoshops I think are "terrible"(there are a ton of photoshops & fan art I've seen on this site that I feel are awful, but I try to only get critical of professionals & not amateurs).
Cobra Commander isn't a knight.
Look since AT LEAST egyptian roman and greek mythologies, writers and creators have been inspired by those before them. but for me, aside from not liking the characters for MOTU (personally) to me they look TOO much like characters from other brands.

Toyguru said Geoff Johns wants a red belt to "break up all that blue." So...this isn't the way Geoff Johns wants him.
TG said Johns sent over a crayon drawing from a character he created when he was...8...I think? He said the age, I think it was 8. Anyway, TG said the drawing would be on display at SDCC!
Also, Eterniandreams is correct. That game cover was photoshopped. Here's a bigger pic of the real deal.![]()

I'm not a big fan of Sir Laser Lot or The Mighty Spector, but both are growing on me and will be displayed on my shelves with my other MOTUC.
I don't envy the person (hopefully it's me) that wins the Create-A-Character Contest this year because I'm sure there will be plenty of harsh criticism even if the character is awesome.

Personally, I do think it gets kind of silly when people go Photoshop crazy and start doing different colors and things. People make artistic choices for a reason, and that's up to them. I don't think it's productiveto start changing colors around or saying to make him gold or silver or whatever. So I don't have much time for it. But, for the most part, I just ignore those posts unless I see something interesting in them.
Before someone thinks that statement is hypocritical, I should point out the crotch-with-belt manips I was doing was only because it had been specifically mentioned as a change they might make and I was wondering which piece they might be thinking of changing it to and thought a visual might be nice for discussion. It's not like it was just some fan wish because, as I stated, I'm actually fine with the figure as-is.
That being said, is it REALLY such a bad thing if people want to take the time to do it? As long as they understand it's not going to really change anything and don't get upset when it doesn't change. Everyone else is free to skip them or simply not visit the thread, right?
Design done by committee is almost always terrible, so whether you like what Scott did or what Geoff did, I think there should be some basic respect that they made some artistic choices. I think that's the basic component missing from a lot of discussion on here - basic respect. Not just for other posters, but the professionals involved in this line. They make mistakes, and I certainly don't approve of every choice they make... and I do think we, as fans, should be able to voice our displeasure... but calling people "clowns" because they are doing things you don't like?
Also, the whole rip-off thing is a deeply weird thing to try to bring up for Masters of the Universe. I love the universe, but many, many characters are obvious "homages" to other characters. In the end, I feel it just reveals how some people will take every opportunity to take a dig at the line or specific people who work on the line, even to the point at grasping at straws... and it gets kind of... well, sad, really.

as I said, for ME, these two look WAY too similar to characters from other brands, POPULAR ones. so for my eyes they don't fit in with MOTU. but that's why I'm not buying them, I'm a bit disappointed that the 30th line (for me}) has thus far been very lacklustre (I only love draego-man, photog gets a pass but even as a kid i didn't like him much)
I think people will be less harsh on a fan character.

I DO like Sir Laser Lot, but I kind of wish they did the 30th line as follows:
1 - Photog (original fan winner)
2 - 4H slot (Draego-Man)
3 - Fan slot
4 - Fan slot
5 - Fan slot
6 - Fan slot
This way, the 30th Anniversary would be more a celebration and thank you to the fans of the franchise for help keeping it alive for 30 years. That's just me though.![]()

Maybe you don't understand what I am trying to say; there is no seperate crotchpiece. The crotchpiece and the pelvis part are one piece of plastic designed to fit into the Hisss abdomen piece to make it interchangeble. See the pic I posted.
This would mean the SLL will have an interchangeble torso, and I don't think Mattel will go that route.
Well, I'm sure the point at which something looks like something else is very subjective. And I think that's an understandable reason to not particularly like a design or think it's not as successful as a design that might have been more unique. I just think it becomes a bit tenuous at best with MOTU to start saying that things are being "ripped-off" or "bootlegged" when so many He-man characters are very much like other characters which—while they might not be as popular NOW—were certainly popular back then.
To me, that's part of the charm. So much of what ends up making even the more derivative characters (including He-man himself!) special and unique come from the storytelling surrounding them. Of course, the classic lines lacks much of that storytelling other than the bios. So I can see it being a challenge because all we have is the visual. Especially right now when we don't even have the bio.
It's one thing to me to not particularly like a design. That's subjective (though clearly not everyone thinks that... but it is) but it's another to just write something off as derivative in a line full of derivative concepts. The whole of fiction and entertainment in derivative, so I just think you can end up skating on thin ice to make too much of a point of it.
And of course, amusingly, the video game cover was just a visual joke someone put together... and people instantly started saying the figure was a rip-off of that.
That would have been very cool. I see why they did it this way... and even the original idea of getting big-time fans to do all the designs was cool... but there is something slightly self-congratulatory about the way it ended up that makes it feel like it's more about celebrating Mattel than the fans or the property itself. Still, as someone who likes a pretty large percentage of what has been shown so far I'm not going to complain too loudly. Still, your idea WOULD have been very cool.![]()
