As mentioned before, I imagined that Hordak created and augmented all of his minions with his techno-virus, so Mantenna was given cybernetic eye stalks for super spying. Also, while Mantenna has always had four legs, I wanted to reflect the design of the original toy, so I broke them out into hoof like, insect legs.

Besides the extendable eye stalks, I also gave this guy a weird periscope laser thing. I have to admit, I don't know what exactly it was .

Gasp! I had never seen this one before, and it is just pure awesome. I have always looked at Mantenna as being a character that with a bit of imagination, could be one of the coolest looking MOTU characters.

Royalt1us, are you seeing this bro? I would buy one of these.

The Heavy weight Champ of the Redesign Challenge

For those who havent seen these, Bearshow had been around to take part in some of the earliest challenges. Without dudes like Him, oICEMANo, Baena, and many others, the challenge may not have ever found is ground to take off running like it did.

Below are The results of challenges that were won by Bearshow Himself!

I had these saved and wanted to post them for you here in honor of the many wins you had acheived in the redesign challenge:

    Challenge #2: Modulok

    Challenge #9: Clamp Champ

Challenge #12: Spikor (the one that inspired me to post on the ORG! Along with oICEMANo's version.. I think they tied in this challenge)

    Challenge #39: Extendar

    Challenge #50: Jitsu

Shoot, I have all these images saved on my computer from way back.

I haven't looked at them in awhile, this is great! They still hold up beautifully to this day!

Welcome back! I missed your lovely art.

Your Spikor is one of the best fan pieces I've ever seen. I'm still angry I didn't get a 200X staction that looks like him.... and your Modulok is amazing as well...

Thanks, Pyre, for posting those! The redesign challenges were absolutely the most fun I've had here! I'll be putting up some higher resolution versions a little further down, with my redesign entries that didn't win as well .

    And now - SNOUT SPOUT!

When I was kid, I loved Snout Spout, but when it came to re-imagining him, I took the approach of making him entirely robotic. I felt his appearance was easier to accept as a robotic beast than just a man with an elephant head. I also designed his feet as full elephant feet, to make him feel more massive and powerful.

I also wanted to give him tubes from his head to the water pack, but wanted them to resemble tusks.

His action features would have been the same as vintage, but with a teched out axe.

I was very happy to see that the final Staction for Snout Spout came very close to this design!

    Next up - SNAKE FACE!

Snake Face was fun because as a kid, I never quite got what they were doing with his head. Was it hair or a helmet? When I approached him, I created the back story that he was an Eternian warrior brought back to life by King Hsss and made into a "snake/zombie/warrior" for the Snake Men.

He was given a more warrior-style helmet and some weapons to make him more formidable.

It was interesting, but out of all of these designs, this is the one that the guys at Mattel liked the best at Comic-Con. Unfortunately, they thought it was an awesome redesign for King Hsss . I can't remember if this was 2002 or 2003, but I know it was back when Jeremy Padawar was running the line; it would have been awesome if Scott/ToyGuru had been running the brand at that time and been able to talk MOTU with him!

Some new Horde reinforcements - MOSQUITOR!

I've always loved Mosquitor, but never got to have him when I was a kid. How cool was the fluid pumping feature?

I envisioned his head as a separate piece or shield that wrapped around his head. He would have large tank on his back that would move the fluid around to his chest.

    And DRAGSTOR!

Dragstor was another one that I went out a limb on. While the figure was more of sleek, robotic figure, I wanted to go industrial mixed with older, iconic biker gear.

The engine back-pack featured some poseable exhaust pipes, and gained some new wicked blades for lethal attacks!

Striking out from the shadows, comes NINJOR!

I saw Ninjor as more of an inhuman creature, a demon of smoke and shadow summoned by Skeletor to combat the Masters. I avoided the removeable cowl, and gave him glowing yellow eyes.

I carried the dragon theme from the chest symbol into all of his armor and accessories. Eric Treadaway said he loved the boots, and planned on stealing the design . I keep waiting for them to show up somewhere !

This was a fun design for me, and I was honored that gbagok and Iceman incorporated the look into hench-ninjas for their Ninjor design for their MOTU-verse project. Thanks, guys!

With all that evil, we need a Master to combat it! How about EXTENDAR!

Now, you'll recognize my Extendar from the redesign challenge, but I had already done him as part of my MOTU toy proposal project. When the redesign for Extendar was on, the gang running it (I believe it was still Predabot but I could be wrong) said it was cool to enter him.

I always saw Extendar as the "knight" of MOTU, so I wanted to really play up that aspect in his redesign. His weapons would include extending features as well!

These pieces are just traditional versions of the 200X series, circa 2003. Some, like Clawful and Sorceress were done before I could get some solid reference material, so they look kind of wacky .

This piece of MANTENNA was created for a card game that another Orger was designing. I wasn't real happy at how this turned out; the detail drowns the piece, and the colors are too muddy.

Speaking of Org projects, there was also a Fan Art Forum Calendar that was made in 2003 that all of us Org artists contributed to. I signed for May, with STINKOR! Again, this was before I had proper references, so it's kind of "Bearshow" Stinkor, I guess :P.

This is amazing work!!!!! i specially like how you've interpreted all members of the Horde, especially Leech. He looks really dangerous and vicious.

Also i love how you made Grizzlor literally a grizzly... Genius! (and i love his armor)

    Can't wait to see more!

Shortly around this time, the redesign challenges started and I came up with the following pieces.

BLAST ATTAK - Not only my first challenge, but the first redesign challenge ever! Also, my first loss ! Battle Brak took the price, but I still like my design. I definitely placed him squarely in the Snake Men camp, which probably cost me the win .

MODULOK - I envisioned him as being a sadistic scientist stitched together from whatever body parts he had gathered. My personal favorite detail was making the "bug-eyed" head more menacing by changing the eyes into goggles. As Pyre mentioned earlier, this one was my first winner !

CLAMP CHAMP - I remember this one as being the first time that I caught Val Staples eye. He helped me with some critiques on my design (his clamp claw is asymmetrical), and it was a huge help. I looked forward to working him more! I like how royal the Champ turned out!

SPIKOR - I'm quickly finding out now how popular this design was! I was frustrated when I did this piece, because I intended for his "Spikor" face to be an iron-maiden style mask that fit over his reptilian real face. But, due to his pose, it didn't really communicate, and I wasn't really proud of it. However, it did tie with Iceman's design, so it created that friendship for me, so I still kind of won :P!

PLUNDOR - Around this time, Buffalo Bill Man appeared, and, man, was he a force of nature! The first time I went up against him, it was for the pinkest evil bunny ever! I went completely Darkseid-inspired with this guy, but it was BBM's creepy Plundor that took the prize. I became a huge fan of his, and began to challenge myself as well!

GREEN GODDESS - This entry wasn't a winner, but it did mark my transition from using ink to just pencils. It allowed me finer detail, and I was happy with the results. It also served as a teaser for a PreTernia saga I had envisioned (notice the snake emblem?), which I hope to someday still reveal. So far, it could still fit into the MOTU Classics storyline...

ANGELLA - Funny thing, I entered a couple of POP character redesigns, but made the mistake of going up against Baena . The man knows his ladies, and does amazing work, as I don't need to point out. Still, I was proud of this piece because I conveyed age in her face without making her old. A personal accomplishment for me, even if it didn't win!

CATRA - Same story as Angella, Baena created a gorgeous Catra that made mine look like a kitten ! I went all way over the top on detail on this one, but I like the pose and format.

JITSU - As Pyre mentioned, this guy did win. I really like this design, and yes, the multiple kanji on his scrolls are completely made up . After I felt that Catra suffered from the washed-out appearance of using pencil, I went back to ink to give my stuff a more crisp look.

SWEET BEE - This was the last redesign challenge I had the opportunity to enter. Again, lost to Baena , but I still had fun making the design. I like the honeycomb armor and the energy wings/antennae.

Also, I had these older pieces of MERMISTA and RIO BLAST, but I can't seem to recall if they were entered or why I did them :P.

I also had created a color tutorial for some folks asking about how I did my art - a stage by stage coloring of MOSS MAN. I've since lost the files of each step, but here's the finished Mossy picture. I love drawing this Moss Man, but I definitely played up more of the feline face he seemed to have on the cartoon than the primate face that the Horsemen intended for him. I love drawing leaves and vines!

Around this time, I also posted some Snake Men redesigns:

KING HSSS - Hsss was always one of my favorite villains (even when he was still just Hiss ), but I was very disappointed with how he turned out in the MYP series. So, I redesigned him to match more with the vintage figure. I envisioned his green "armor" to be wrapping that unraveled and revealed the serpents below.

RATTLOR - I really liked the General Rattlor design, but I missed the simplicity of the vintage figure. I re-engineered his blue and yellow scale detail to be armor plating. The section on the neck would spread out on coils as he extended it, and close down to match his arms and leg armor.

TUNG LASHOR - The Tungster was my first Snake Man as a kid, and I loved his "poison arrow frog" look. While the MYP version was neat, I missed the look. Here, I tried to still envoke the frog look but still make him snake-like.

And last but not least, my last acts before disappearing for five years, were designing "Bearshow" versions of various Orgers creations.

ASP'R, THE SNAKE MEN PRIEST (created by SnakeMenPriest)

    WRAPTOR (created by Patreek)

I also did a commissioned piece of Glade, as created by J-Sun, but I don't have a copy of the color version to post. Does J-Sun still post in the Fan Art Forum? I have the ink original, but I don't want to post it without his okay since it was a purchased piece.

And that that's! All the old Bearshow art ever!

Thank you guys so much for the support and hope you guys enjoy the old stuff .

    Now for all new stuff!

    Cheers!
    Bearshow!
