The point is that Mattel from time to time is going to do stuff like this to promote the line.... like it or not. And if it is going to happen, then it's better for it to be something like a Silver She-Ra or the Spirit of Grayskull than something essential like Hal Jordan.

I can't imagine that the Spirit of Grayskull or the Silver She-Ra cost them that much to make anyway. In the case of Grayskull, all they had to do was put a transparent blue version of whatever material these figures are made of in the machine that was already cranking out the standard and bronze versions of him. No real major cost there. In She-Ras case, I'm not sure if they used a different upfront material and/or coated her in something after the fact, but either way it was probably a minimal cost involved. The major exepense of creating a figure is in the tooling.... meaning making the mold that they will be produced from. Simply putting a different material in an already existing mold (as would be the case with Grayskull and She-Ra) isn't going to result in a major cost. You argue that they could make more money by selling these to the public, and that might be true, but they also could have not made them at all (despite what would be the fairly low cost to make them), and not had a promotional item at all, and perhaps not having that promotional item would have resulted in less attention being given to their event. Either way, whether these very limited figures are produced or not, we, the general audience, don't end up with these figures. And they really aren't essential other than (with all due respect) in the minds of the really, really OCD completests. The problem isn't even how "cool" the figure is for some people... it's just the fact that some version exists that they don't have. It could be a poop-brown-colored She-Ra, or a Grayskull that is yellow and purple with green polka-dots, and many of the same people are still going to complain. Why shouldn't Mattel have these occasional promotional item like this? It's a nice way to promote the line, and the winners end up with nice, unique items. There's no real harm there.
Yeah, they "could" produce more of them and sell them to the handful of people who would want them, but they could also start cranking out tons of pointless recolored variants of many of the MOTUC figures and try to sell them to us... I'm sure if they did that, more complaints from fans would start coming in rather than compliments.

Now, by contrast, from what I understand, not only was Hal Jordan extremely limited, but new tooling in creating the mold for his head was done, and that mold was destroyed after those figures were made. Now that's a waste, quite frankly, because that means that A LOT of money was spent to make that figure happen, only for the public to have essentially no access to him. To do that for a rather essential character (and not just some limited, odd-colored variant of an existing figure) was ridiculous on many levels.

I look at my collection at the moment and I don't have the original King Grayskull, the bronze one, the spirit one (obviously), the colour-change Orko, the silver She-Ra, the flock-eared Moss Man, the SDCC He-Ro or his red and purple staffs. I can't imagine that I'd enjoy my collection more if I had these items.
Probably the only thing that I'm really "missing" that I would like to have, but isn't essential enough for me to pay anything more than the standard price of a figure is the flocked ears Moss-Man. That's the only general sale item that I missed out on despite being online ahead of time to be ready to buy it. It just went WAY too fast. And I didn't even care about getting the modern head with flocked ears, but I wanted the vintage head with flocked ears since that is how the original figure was. So I ended up just getting an extra unflocked ears one to display both heads (I already had one coming from my sub at the time).

With He-Ro, I have all 3 versions of the stone color because I actually wanted all 3 of them. They are all the Matty version. I had no desire to get the SDCC figure because I actually didn't want the SDCC logo stamped on the figure, itself. So I purposely avoided that variant. I actually got lucky in that I took the risk of ordering a bunch of extra He-Ros from Matty to take a gamble at the stone colors, and ended up with a bunch of reds and purples. Since I'm part of a local fan club and a lot of the other members ended up with batches of green, I was able to trade for the green one that then sell most of the other ones at cost to other members of the group. So, it was a gamble that worked out nicely.

I do have both the standard SDCC Grayskull (2 actually, 1 fully removed from the box, and 1 still tied down to the box), and the bronze version. I've been VERY lucky, however, as to date the only figure that I've paid high secondary market prices for is the Bronze Grayskull. The other 2 SDCC versions a friend of mine who went to the con hooked me up with (I had him grab me 2 just to gamble a bit at getting the bronze version, but no luck), and luckily a member of the group that I was talking about earlier was able to help me with the SDCC version of Orko. As I previously said, SDCC He-Ro was of no concern, and since I have given up keeping an extra of each figure MOC (I was doing that for a while), I didn't care about getting SDCC Marlena since once removed from the package Captain Glenn was the exact same figure.

Of course my luck may change this year depending on how they handle the new SDCC exclusives, and that white version of the Sorceress.

I never really was a completist, but there are a few of those 'rare' promo-only figures that I would've liked to have gotten. Specifically the 2010 Holiday Gray Ghost figure. As a huge BTAS fan, that figure in the packaging would've been sweet to add to my Bat-collection. At least Mattel made the figure available, even if it wasn't on the cool packaging. Why couldn't Mattel actually make a Hal Jordan in JLU? I never collected JLU, but a friend of mine did, and pretty much quit back when he knew he wouldn't get the Hal Jordan figure.

I have all of them on your list except for green Modulok. Never even heard of that one.

Believe it or not, none of those were exceptionally *hard* to find. Expensive? Sure, in some cases. I think the most I paid was $300 for one of the giants. But all of them are readily available in the market if you just know where to look. It helps that I'm not a MOC collector either.

I understand the completist mentality, but there's a line that must be drawn somewhere. Heck, I'll even teach you the easiest way to get your very own Silver She-Ra:

The beautiful thing about this formula is that it works just as well for most variants, like Bronze/King/Spirit of Grayskull or any other tacky repaint that fetches thousands of dollars.

With the joints exposed, that silver She-Ra really does look like a piece of crap. If the joints were filled in, it would at least look like a statue, rather than an action figure with no personality.

I'm a near completist I suppose, because I can live without Spirit King Grayskull and Silver She-Ra. Everything else I want eventually. As it stands I have four Skeletor figures, and one is a double. I still need a few more to be set. I consider the reissue Skeletor with the improvement face paint a seperate version, so I have to get the original, etc. Things like that.

Wow. This thread makes me feel better about myself. I thought of myself as a completist, yet I have no desire for Bronze KG, Spirit KG, or Silver She-Ra. Let alone a Moss Man with different ear flock, or a Jewelstar with different colored rocks, come to think of it.

    I guess I'm cured!

so that pic of silver she-ra says they are customs. unless you are expanding your selection to include all customs (even those made by mattel employees), i don't know why she would be on your list.

After looking at my collection, where since 1 year only figures stand, which I really like, I don't regret turning from a completist to a cherry picker.

I can now relax, spare a lot of money and the 2012 line up has so many items I don't want, that it proves me right.

I guess it's how you define completist. I'm a MOC collector so I like to have one of everything.

I no longer have the money to buy the super rare items like Spirit Grayskull or Gold She-Ra so it doesnt bother me that i won't have them. Even if I could still afford them they would not be a priority on my list, I really dont consider them part of the line as they are variants that were very limited for special events.

Also I don't have any interest in things like flocked ears Moss Man, Clear Orko, Tampo/Stones He-Ro and any running changes to the figures. Other than that I try to get everything.

Say it ain't so Big C!

If the line was cancelled tomorrow, we might not have Ram Man or Modulok, but we'd at least have the highly demanded Star Sisters.
Jitsu should have had his 200X belt!!!

It was my intention to be a completist ... that is until DR so far failed to deliver my Wind Raiders ...

    I guess I'm cured!

Um ... shoot, I'll ask if you won't. What different rocks for Jewelstar?????

Yeah, some Jewelstars have more of a purple stone color, while others are more pinkish.

Starting my collection so late in the game, it doesn't make sense for me to be a completist with the Classics line. I do like the majority of the figures but there are a couple that are either non-essential (Wun-Dar or Mo-Larr) or just plain too expensive for me to hunt down (King Grayskull or He-Ro variants). I'm not familiar with NA or 200X figures, so I tend to ignore them unless they look cool to me. For example, I got Chief Carnivus today, from the March Madness sale, even though I have no idea who he is. Also, I prefer to keep my figures loose so packaging variants are meaningless to me. I recently bought a Captain Glenn so that I can make Queen Marlena and if I decide to get King Grayskull, I'll try to pick up the cheapest one I can find. The only exclusive figure that's on my wish list is the TRU Battle Armor Faker...He looks cool but, ultimately, I can live without him!

people who have both are reporting this or is this based on comparing pictures? if the latter, then could it just be a lighting issue?

Are we talking the colour of her staff or the jewels that come part of her body/costume?
Is there a picture of two figures different colours side by side?
