I don't see how anyone can honestly say that the effects work on John Carter was "cheap" no matter what they may think of the rest of the movie. The Tharks surpass even Avatar's much vaunted Na'vi for realistic depiction and intergration.
Are you sure you watched the right movie? It should have been John Carter directed by the Oscar winning Andrew Stanton, not Asylum Entertainment's 2009 direct-to-video cash-in movie Princess of Mars.
