    Car iPod player/charger cords---recommendations?

    Hey y'all,

So last year I got a Griffen brand cable thingy that plays your iPod (mine's a Touch) in your car while charging it at the same time (via cigarette lighter).

Within 6 months or so though the rubber started coming off the part where the cord goes into the base unit that plugs into your iPod, and the colored wire are exposed. And because of this, it doesn't play in "stereo" in my car speakers anymore.

I brought this up to a Bet Buy employee, and she said hers (same brand) did the same thing after about a year and a half.

Is this common among these kind of cable thingies, or is "Griffen" just not a good brand, or what?

Any recommendations on good replacements, another brand?

Yes, they are a cheap brand. You may be better off getting a standard MP3 player FM transmitter with a USB pass-through to use the charger cable, rather than an iPod-specific transmitter(I assume you want an FM transmitter and not just a charger cable?).

Ah, so they are cheap, thanks for the heads-up.

I'm a little lost though with your IT-talk, lol. The one I had plugged into the lighter, and had a unit on the middle of the cord to search for the clearest FM radio station which to play the iPod (Touch) music through, and then that plug-in thingy that pushes into the bottom of my Touch.

    Here's a photo from Amazon:

And here's the Amazon page about it.

If you buy a "cheap" one, better test it at the testing area, I believe Belkin and other "Apple" related accessory will give you enough quality to charge the phones.

Griffen? I think I buy that product from the Authorize Apple Store, so it will work well on you!

A lot of these FM transmitters are made "universal" so they'll work with standard MP3 players through the headphone jack. They often have a USB port in them to allow use of a charger cable for units with built-in batteries. But I have never had an Apple MP3 player so I have no idea what proprietary connectors they use so you may need something made for them. The $5 transmitter that Family Dollar carries now probably isn't going to work.

I have an older car so there's no direct line-in jack for things like iPods. Last fall I bought a JVC stereo that replaced the stereo that came with the car. It was about $150, including installation. My favorite thing about it? It has a USB jack that I can plug my iPod into directly using the white iPod charger cord. I've used the radio transmitter adapters and a tape deck adapter (that's how old my car is!) in the past. Both produced somewhat muffled sound. The JVC USB jack gives me crystal clear sound. It's been a great investment.

Well, it was time to get a new one, so I'm trying a "Belkin" now---hopefully it's MUCH more durable!
