I liked MYP a lot, but they missed out on heart in many cases IMO. I think they pushed the 'cool' factor too hard and diminished MOTU where it shouldn't have been diminished (to be fair they boosted it where they needed to as well).

If Battlecat doesn't talk he should be EXTREMELY expressive and have a lot of personality, in MYP he was most times nothing but a vehicle or a reason for he-man to get mad. I want him to talk personally, but if he doesn't then write good enough that he shows more character. Samurai Jack had man silent moments but he was written and animated very well, so it didn't hamper him. MYP didn't fill the void left by his lack of voice.

While there are a few reasons I'm not a fan of the 2002 era, my biggest problem has always been the way He-Man never seemed to be the star of the show or have much character(which I blame a lot on the person who voiced him). Between that & Battle Cat, it's too bad that you can't combine the MOTU & the Thundercats reboots. I feel TC gave us a good hero in Lion-O while Snarf worked extremely well without speaking. MYP's MOTU, on the other hand, could definitely could have helped TC in terms of building up its villains while actually featuring them on the show. Both shows were flawed IMO, but if only they were able to learn from their respective mistakes(at least things I feel are mistakes) & get another chance with new toons(or a second season in TC's case).

My main problems with MYP were:

-far too much, really really high, leaping around
-way too much technology - they should have emphasised the barbarism & the "magic" of rare technology.

I agree with you on this a lot! I too felt that he-man wasn't the star, it felt more like Man At Arms was to me. Thundercats moved too slow as far as the main villains were concerned, but they did a good job in other areas you're right.

I do not agree about too much technology in MYP. If anything there was not enough as the villains were all so low tech compared to the heroes, hardly using any of their own vehicles and relying more on magic and beastman's menagerie to get things done (Tri-Klops and his Doomseekers were perhaps the only exception). I think the weapons like the Power Sword got overteched in appearance, but that wasn't MYP's influence and the tech never seemed to play a part.

I keep seeing this line of thinking from fans in general about emphasizing barbarians and magic, and while I think characters like Man-E-Faces and Roboto have already undermined that, I think it would be interesting. But until Mattel gets someone with a vision to explore a Thundarr-esque post-apocalyptic version of MOTU that skews more to the undeveloped setting in the earliest minicomics those fans will never be satisfied (not saying they cannot be satisfied either). I don't think that MYP or Filmation are bad or even "wrong" takes on the property however, my only objection to them was that they seemed so small in scale--Filmation for its budget, MYP for not wanting to look outside Eternia.

Technology is a very important aspect of the MOTU-story (especially with Filmation). In the documentary on the DVDs, this was brought up (I forget by whom). He said on Eternia, technology improved everyone's lives and it was praised. On Etheria, technology was destroying the planet, used for evil and the people "feared" it. They were exact opposites. I never thought of it like that, but I like it.

I've always liked the Thundarr the Barbarian aspect of Pre-Filmation. I like the idea that technology is some rare thing left over from The Great Wars, almost like magic weapons hidden away in dungeons. MAA is smart enough to get most things that he's unearthed to work, which explains why the Evil Warriors have a lack of vehicles compared to the Masters. Aside from MAA's arm cannon or devices, I was put off from the "instant technology" from the MYP pilot (seen during Teela and Adam's joust), but that and the twirling went away after the pilot.

MYP not going off Eternia was a conscious choice. We might laugh at the reasoning NOW, but back then MYP thought the "universe aspect of He-Man" was New Adventures territory and kept him on Eternia. This might have been because of the fan backlash against NA, since it was the last He-Man cartoon before MYP.

yeah that was my problem, they avoided all the aspects of filmation and NA that people didn't like, but they did it to a fault. the reason people didn't like NA wasn't because of space travel it was because they took it so far from MOTU. the problems with filmation wasn't talking animals, it was just that there was too much comic relief. like I said MYP only looked at what didn't work with filmation they didn't focus on what DID work. they tried to hard to delete filmation's stigma that they missed on it's magic.

I can agree with that to an extent. While I didn't like Filmation's super extreme focus on He-Man/Adam, Teela, Man-At-Arms, Orko and Cringer almost EVERY episode, there was no doubt that He-Man/Adam was the main character. When we did get the occasional new character, I thought they were a much needed breath of fresh air. MYP fixed that by focusing on secondary characters, but went to far when He-Man took a backseat to Man-At-Arms.

The relationships are different too. In MYP characters are defined by their roles. Filmation felt like an 80's sitcom cast. For example, MYP Randor was a king first and foremost; Filmation Randor was Dad. Heck, even Teela...In Filmation, MAA tells Teela that she can't go to the Darklands because it's too dangerous. If it was MYP, he would have told her to take clean socks.

yeah pretty much. like i said a long time ago both series had great things about them, but it was at the cost of other great things. that's the shame of MYP to me, they had the chance to deliver something PERFECT, they just at most times and in my opinion, forgot a part of the recipe. with good intentions mind you, hopefully the 3rd time around we get it right (NA doesn't count as I'm talking about Masters of the Universe cartoons no he-man cartoons)

At least they got better about the length of the twirling time after the pilot. In the pilot, it was like they were all part-time baton twirlers and just patiently waited for the opponent to complete their routine before attacking.

I was always sure it was conscious, though when did it come out they were afraid of evoking NA? I never laughed so much as sneered at that despicable choice--that and no Granamyr because they couldn't handle talking dragons.

It's bound to be for somebody anyway, but for others it'll be abominable heresy. Even if 99% of fans found it awesome there are still sure to be angry reactions.
